the thing about dan and phil is that they know how phannies operate very well. they know what sorts of things we latch on to. how to communicate with us. and they can do it without getting a lot of unwanted attention, privacy invasion, and interviewers up their asses. this is how the moving of The Line works. they do a bit of everything they're comfortable with at the time short of formally announcing "we are in love with each other" because then the locals would put them in some tabloid and it would be stupid and bad.

but they want US to know a bit. because we're THEIR mutually parasocial freaks.

unfortunately this means the phannie experience of reading instagram comments/reddit and thinking "this has to be ragebait. how do they not get it" is, to some degree, intentional

example of clown to clown/dnp to phannie communication. do you remember on tour, how dan was genuinely convinced that "compare hand sizes" was somehow sexual. but the wavelength WE were on was "well if we asked you outright to hold hands you'd laugh at us and say no, but if we make it weird you'll be intrigued". and even under his false assumption dan would STILL DO IT

this is actually still a very interesting post in a post-hardlaunch world. i picked up on a couple of things pretty accurately! tabloid worries (though i overvalued that as a factor obviously. because i thought this style of hard launch was not coming)

and i do think they were dropping hints and foreshadowing on purpose— not even primarily for us as my post implies, but to like… try it out. see what it might look like to just be themselves. 🥺 and also yeah warn us a little bit because god look how we’ve reacted. there would have been so many more phannie medical incidents if they hadnt been boiling the frogs for years at this point
