Dutch Kennel Club becomes first to ban British bulldog

The kennel's move comes after new laws the Dutch government introduced restricting the breeding of broad-skulled dogs who can suffer issues

the Dutch kennel club has now banned the registration of new brachycephalic breed puppies including the British bulldog, Pug, Cavalier King Charles spaniel, Boston terrier, French bulldog, Pekingese, Japanese chin, shih tzu, griffon Bruxellois, griffon Belge, petit brabancon and Affenpinscher.

This is HUGE.

Some annoying comments from the British Bulldog Breeding Association in there about how cross-breeding to improve conformation doesn’t work because they lose their “sweet personality” which is the biggest load of hogwash I’ve ever read.

Of course there’s going to be some truth to the point of how it might push the fanatic brachy breeders into essentially anarchy and theyll continue breeding them without testing bitches/sires etc etc… but honestly, the majority don’t readily do that anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️

i just don’t understand some of these beep breeders

they’ll mix every pattern and combo under the sun into a pied animal

then try their hardest to get as little of that pattern as possible??

i’ve never understood it. there’s a couple of morphs that give you white/mostly white snakes, it’s what pied does to the actual pattern that makes it so interesting

50/50s and low whites are just so much cooler looking than yet another “white snake with a headpatch”

Y’all this is a great video to study to observe the body language of a very happy but also very excited cat.  Lots of people see videos of excited cats doing things like climb rock climbing walls or get on small boats and think they are angry or scared, when they aren’t.  Here’s a good example of happy excitement and tension in a cat where the cat’s pleasure is easy to see.  The cat’s tail is lashing and its ears are going backward and forward like crazy, but the cat is not angry, it is merely off its shits because snow is just incredible.  This is a wildly playful cat which might play-attack a hand or other animal because it is so excited, but not out of anger.  Note the zoomies at the end to burn off some of that energy!

Think about it. When we humans do something fun and very physical, our bodies are often tense, at the ready, and a lot of our body language does look kind of aggressive or even scared. Cats are the same!  Animals at play or investigating new things often show some tension, but tension is not the same as anger or fear!

i just got terraforming and river construction today except everything is in such a bullshit place i have to move around literally everything to make it looks nice and mr nook can only demolish one bridge per day so it’s going to take a while to even really get started and i don’t even have the ability to edit cliffs yet so i have to move around those somehow and everything looks like a mess.

i’m having the time of my life tbh.

I got this absolute radiant beauty a month ago, and I finally go her out for photos. Meet Tiramisu!! She’s a T+ albino 007 (007 = matrix goldeneye combo). 

What knocks her out of the park is that really high level of patterning, kind of tri-stripe look she has! Really spectacular in all ways, with a darling personality. I love her!!

 I guarantee you all of these athletes enjoy their lives more than the fat lapdogs I see come into work every day. If you’ve ever known a dog truly bred for work or sports you’ll understand that there’s no forcing them to do any of this–it’s in their blood.

These folks have never experienced the palpable joy of a dog who knows they're about to get on the track and it shows!

I've helped hitch up sled teams and the biggest challenge is getting them to stand still enough to get the harness on, we're talkin can't keep their paws on the ground, full body wagging excitement.

It put the idea in my mum's head to cart train our aussie/belgians (who have enough front wheel drive to dislocate your shoulder) and they clearly love it too, which makes sense; shepherds often worked double duty as pack animals before the industrial revolution.

As we see in this painting The Little Wagon by Henriëtte Ronner-Knip (which also makes it seems like these dogs work in shifts! Neat!)

You have to remember these animals are born career athletes, we spent thousands of years seeing to that. Recent years have seen many scandals and high profile abuse cases, but unfortunately the backlash has fallen on dog sports as a whole instead of bad pet owners (see also: the "adopt don't shop" discourse). Physical activity is vital to the mental and physical health of these breeds, you don't need look very hard to see they live for it.

Sometimes I wonder if people are more willing to recognize pit bull aggression as abuse than chihuahuas aggression because chihuahuas are “girly dogs”. People tend to have a much easier time hating “girly” things.

After meeting a lot of other chihuahua owners my experience is that they’re like less independent terriers. They should be treated accordingly.

I have no way of confirming if this story is tru, but I heard from my old boss at an exotic aquarium that they once got the wrong species of mantis (some just have sharp forelegs like the insect). An employee made the mistake of sticking his hand in to scrub algae without thinking and... the shrimp shattered 3 of fingers and a few more bones in his palm, he swore it only hit him once.

And THAT was the dumbest on the job accident form he ever had to fill out.

This is why you don’t let your reptiles interact with your dog. That’s a femoral fracture in a six-month-old tegu. The femur- the strongest bone in the body- is completely snapped. It’ll take some serious orthopedic surgery to fix this- probably pins and a splint/cast, and this at a pivotal time for growth in the animal’s life. All it takes is a minute- all the owner did was leave the room.
