Reblogging again because this is the ONLY āfashion through timeā video that does it right. All the others glamorize/modernize the eras WAY too much, esp. considering theyāre claiming historical accuracy. This is the only one that truly nails it.
Jodi scowling at Seb is now cannon!Ā
Terry wrote to me and he said Ā āYou have to do this ā- he began this email, I went back and looked at it the other day - Ā āI know how busy you are, but you are the only person who has the same understanding of and passion for the old girl that I do, so you got to do it ācause I want to see it.ā And I said yes. And very shortly after, Terry died. So now he couldnāt see it.
So I had to make the thing that he wanted, which meant it became kind of a mad passion project. The things that if it was a me-project I wouldāve given away on, things I wouldnāt have held the line on like some kind of a mad-eyed prophet.
Suddenly Iām going āNo, you cannot take this out. This is going to be in there. Because Terry wrote that scene and he would have wanted to see it, so itās in there.ā And theyāre like āOh, but do you know how much money we could save if you donāt actually see Agnes Nutter being blown up and arrested and dragged to the stake, we got this idea,ā said an early bunch of producers who later left, āthat we could have woodcuts and the narrator explaining what happened. Isnāt that just as good?ā
And I sort of mentally run that by the ghostly Terry Pratchett in the back of my head, itās like: āTerry, is that just as good?ā And heās like: āFuck āem.ā
Jack: Miss Fisher, weāre supposed to be rescuing you.
Phryne: I got bored, so I rescued myself.

Bonus Recipe: Hot Cider
Alright, alright, so I know she doesnāt mention hot cider, but I figured itās a given, and also I didnāt realize until after I made the recipe. So itās going up anyways.Ā Difficulty: Easy, 2 hours. Makes 6 servings.Ā
-2L of pure apple juice or apple cider (non-alcoholic is best so you donāt cook out any booze) -About 40 whole cloves (roughly 3 tablespoons) -5 to 8 cinnamon sticks,Ā -4 or 5 slices of ginger -1 tablespoon (8g) anise seeds -1 tablespoon (8g) of whole allspice berries -10 cardamom pods -8 to 10 whole peppercorns -1 tablespoon (7g) nutmeg -The peel of about half a large orange -Rum or brandy, if desired
NOTE: If you donāt have any of these spices in their whole form, donāt worry! Use the ground stuff. It all sinks to the bottom of the pot and you can pass the cider all through a cheesecloth if you like.Ā
Pour the 2L of apple juice or cider into a large pot over medium-low heat.Ā
Use a vegetable peeler to shave off slices of orange peel and add them into the pot along with all your other spices. I broke open the cinnamon sticks to release more flavour. Also quite honestly you can add in whatever spice amounts you so choose based on what you like, but the amounts I posted are a good balance of flavour, I find.
Continue to cook over medium-low until the juice/cider is hot, and let it simmer for 15 minutes. Donāt let it come to a boil (it wonāt hurt it if you do by accident but itās just better not to).
Now weāre gonna want to keep the cider hot, so the best way is to throw it all in a crockpot (spices included). Keep it on low for 1 ½ hours at least, 4 hours at most. If you donāt have a crockpot, keep it on low on the stove and cover with a lid. Once itās done, itāll be quite dark in colour.
When youāre ready to serve up your hot apple cider, you can pass it through a cheesecloth or just ladle it up as is into mugs. Make sure to include a cinnamon stick, though! Add in your booze (if desired) last.
This cider is my favourite fall drink, and I spent many autumn nights as a kid sitting in front of the fireplace drinking my hot apple cider after a long day of jumping in leaf piles.Ā

Let me share with you what I consider to be the most important less Iāve learned in my adult life:
āGrowing up doesnāt mean you canāt have Zebra Cakes. Growing up simply means that, if you want to have Zebra Cakes, you buy them for yourself.ā
āWhat the hell are you talking about, Bear?ā Well, let me explain. For those of you who live outside of the US, this is a Zebra Cake:
Itās a little pre-packaged snack cake that is horribly cheap and junky and really not that great, but it is like manna from heaven to me. I fucking love these things. When I was a little kid growing up, my mom bought Zebra Cakes but once in a blue moon. They were intended to be put in mine and my siblingsā school lunches, but my brother and I would eat them whenever we wanted, so Mom just didnāt see the point. (They also used to be kind of expensive, at least for our familyās budget.) Needless to say, the coveted Zebra Cakes were a luxury for me, and were one of the tastes of my childhood.
Fast forward to my college years. I was living in an apartment with three other people, doing my own shopping and cooking. I was in the grocery store, picking up some stuff, and I happened to walk past a display of snack cakes. Among them were several boxes of Zebra Cakes.
I paused at this, chuckling to myself. Oh man. Zebra Cakes. I havenāt had those in years. I loved those when I was a kid.Ā I reminisced happily and thought about how much I missed the taste of Zebra Cakes, then started to walk away.
And then I stopped dead.
Because I had realized that there was literally nothing stopping me from buying a box of Zebra Cakes. There was nothing stopping me from buying tenĀ boxes of Zebra Cakes. If I wanted Zebra Cakes, I could have goddamn Zebra Cakes, because it was my money and my decision to make.
I put two boxes in my cart (they were 2 for $5) and never looked back.
Hereās the secret I learned that day: The idea of something beingĀ ājust for kidsā is, by and large, bullshit. What you do on your own adult free time with your own adult money is, by its very nature, adult stuff. Itās like comedian Eddie Izzard (who frequently performed his routines in drag) once said when someone asked about him wearingĀ āwomenās clothesā:Ā āTheyāre not womenās clothes. Theyāre my clothes. I bought them.ā
I am 25 years old, and yesterday I bought myself a shark lunchbox. Look at it. Look at how awesome my lunchbox is.
Was this lunchbox intended to by bought for and used by a child? Yes. The tag said it was for ages 3 and up. But it was bought by and will be used by an adult, and anyone who thinks thatās wrong is probably just jealous that they donāt have the self-confidence to rock a shark lunchbox at 25.
So like. Being āmatureā and āan adultā doesnāt mean you have to completely abandon the things that made you happy when you were younger. It just means that you may have to approach them in a different way.Ā
Pay attention, thereās a lesson here
I hesitated reblogging this, and I am not entirely sure why.
LEGO. I just turned 42 and I have LEGO sets allllll over my house. Why? Because I wanted them, and because it is my money and I will spend it how I like, MOTHER.
As long as you arenāt bankrupting yourself, buy the things you *want* to buy, the things that bring you JOY.
you are missing out on so much if you just stick toĀ āadult thingsā
Zebra cakes make an excellent āthe secret to happinessā metaphor.
