I hate how every social media saw tiktok being successful and is now desperately trying to get a slice of that success by adding a short videos infinite scroll function like YouTube has the “shorts” section now Instagram added reels months ago and even Pinterest now automatically takes you to a “watch” section with short videos and you have to manually switch back to the normal version every time you open the app. What if we made social medias to be different from one another instead of constantly adding new features that have nothing to do with the core concept of the website but are only there to frenetically chase the high of whatever’s popular at the moment. What if we did that.

The thing I don't think these companies understand is that, we don't want TikTok recreated on Instagram. We have TikTok and it's chaotic and amazing and doesn't take itself too seriously.

We like the unpolished realness of TikTok because people don't feel the need to post 'insta model' content there. You can post you, the real you and people will hype you up.

Anyone can accidentally go viral there and it's hilarious because nobody expects it when it happens.

Instagram should just keep doing what it's doing and let us enjoy our feral little short video home.

I love that moment when a vague spark of an idea grows legs and starts to run.

Worldbuilding starts to fall into place, characters start to take shape and the plot starts to flow in front of you like a river.

Four hours ago I had just a vague notion of who my main character was now I have the bones of a world and the start of a plot.

It's my favourite part of the creative process. I am so excited to write this story, I feel like I have something exciting and interesting.

I know I need to plan, I know I need to worldbuild.

Unfortunately the story squirrels are running round my head telling me to write the thing and I'm trying to herd them into a box full of holes and they inevitably escape going "don't plan, pants it, we want to write the thing."

And that is a commentary on trying to write with ADHD and poor impulse control.

I know that the story I want to write will benefit from me taking my time, doing the research and planning everything. My brain knows there is dopamine in starting a new exciting thing and wants that dopamine.

I will resist the squirrels because I know it's the best thing to do, but it also makes doing the research hard when your brain is going "no research, just write."

It's honestly exhausting.

It's definitely that people are becoming more annoying. My anger has got less recently but people are definitely annoying me more, I just don't get as angry as I used to about it.

Yesterday was a bad writing day. I spent a lot of time staring at a screen. Lots of Tumblr replies. Lots of Twitter (the Netflix Sandman trailer going out didn’t help). Lots of being grumpy at myself and convinced I couldn’t do it any more. The script was a mess. I was doomed. This morning I printed out what I had to fix, picked up a pen, made a few notes and started typing. It was fun and easy and straightforward. I finished it and sent it to the people who needed to see it, and just got an amazed call from our script editor saying she was laughing while crying and couldn’t work out how I’d done everything in a day.

And I hadn’t done it all in a day. All of the being miserable yesterday was necessary for it to fly today. All of the knowing it was insoluble and awful made the work today relatively easy. I had to get out of my own way, and had to read it freshly, without being attached to anything. And then I just did the notes. And to make the thing that worked today, a lot of stuff that didn’t quite work or sort of worked had to be written too. It’s always easier to fix stuff that exists.

Anyway. Yesterday = bad writing day. Today = good writing day. I thought it was worth telling people, in case there was anyone else out there who was having a bad writing day too.
