We love blink 182!

Well, it is time to admit that I love Blink 182. 

There, I said it! 

I've been listening to Blink for 17 years now. Their music has been there watching me get through some good and hard times, achieving goals and failing classes. Generally, growing up. There was a time in my life that I thought I was too avant garde to listen to their music but,at the end of the day that's just bullshit. If you like something, there is no apparent reason that you shouldn't do it. Like Dave Grohl once said:

“I don’t believe in guilty pleasures. If you fucking like something, like it. That’s what’s wrong with our generation: that residual punk rock guilt, like, “You’re not supposed to like that. That’s not fucking cool.” Don’t fucking think it’s not cool to like Britney Spears’ “Toxic.” It is cool to like Britney Spears’ “Toxic”! Why the fuck not? Fuck you! That’s who I am, goddamn it! That whole guilty pleasure thing is full of fucking shit.” Anyway, one of the first, huge stories of 2015 has to be the online drama of Tom Delonge quitting (or not) Blink 182. This whole storry made many people feel upet because, let's face it, Blink 182 were, at some point, one of the biggest bands in the world. A group that influenced thousants of bands around the world! Thinking about this situation, I came to the following conclusions and just wanted to share them with you:

1) With Tom out, the only original Blink 182 member is Mark Hoppus, since Travis is not their original drummer. But, the truth is that it was Tom and ex drummer Scott Raynor that started the band, back in their highschool years and it wasn't until a couple of months later that Mark joined! They weren't called Blink yet but anyway! 

2) It was clear that Tom wasn't really "into it" anymore. It hurts to say so but it's the truth. In most of post 2010 Blink 182, live footage he seems either bored, drunk or out of place. Angel and Airwaves is what he wants to do right now either people like it or not. It's not a bad thing. Actually, it's quite honest! 

3) Everyone is excited and eager to see the band perform with Alkaline Trio's Matt Skiba on guitar and vocals. Not because they don't like Tom but mostly because it is an interesting combination of musicians and also because he is an amazing singer! Will he be joining the band permanetly? Even they don't know yet. 

4) When they broke up for the first time in 2005, they used the term "indefinite hiatus". Since then, bands stopped "breaking up" or "calling it a day", they started going in "indefinite hiatus"

5) It's not going to be the same again. It has never been the same since their indefinite hiatus in 2005... ...Still love them though! Written by: Lonely Lou

Our Favourites, 2014 version!

These days, everyone makes lists with "the best" of the year. We, here at Pink Motel Records, don't believe in the term "best" when it comes to music, we believe in favourite. So, we decided to make a list with our favourite of the year.

Future Islands - Singles

Well, even though we've been fans for some years now, we have to admit that this was their year. With the release of their album "Singles" and their infamous Letterman performance of their song "Seasons", Future Islands broke into the spotlight and actually got credit for their amazingly good job! This album is amazing, it has many (soon to be) classic songs like (of course) "Seasons", the romantic "Like the Moon", the personal "Lighthouse" and many more. We loved each and every song on this album and we trully believe that  Samuel T. Herring is the frontman that our generation was waiting for so patiently!

Damon Albarn - Everyday Robots

What do we need to say about this album? It is so good and so fresh. Just like every new Damon Albarn album is, up to date, stylish and tasty!

Beck - Morning Phase

Everytime Beck releases new music, the best thing to do is, get a couple of days off from your job, school or uni and get into his world! This is one of his most mature albums and one of his "softer" ones. It won't change your life or the way that you listen to music (like some of his oldest ones) but, it is a really good album and it deserves to be in this list because it always made our day!

They know how to make good albums and they never stop impressing us with their songwriting skills! Their greatest superpower is that they keep it classy no matter what.

The Drums - Encyclopedia

They managed to get to our top 5 favourites because we love it when bands try hard to work on new sounds and succeed! The Drums took a darker approach even though noone would have bothered if they didn't. "Encyclopedia" is not the easiest album but it has some amazing moments awaiting to be discovered.

Reissue of the year

Well, it has to be American Football's 1999 debut (and only) album which came out again this year. There are four reasons why we chose this one.

1) Polyvinyl records is one of our favourite record labels which always puts out quality goods (records, cd's, packages, cassette tapes, merch e.t.c.) and great music

2) We had never even imagined that American Football would re-release their album and reform to play shows again!  

3) It's a great album that was so underated and burried deep inside music industry's closet. 

4) Polyvinyl like we said above, did a great job with this one. It comes in two coloured vinyl's which contain the record and some amazing rarities like live recordings, lost demos and many more. You can also buy it on CD and Cassette tapes which is always a big plus! 

5) They finally made a video for this song! At the very same house, you know which house.

Or maybe, maybe it's the times we've had

I guess most of you have already heard about it: Britpop turned 20 this year.

  Well, I’m not going to debate whether this is right or wrong, even if, from my point of view, the very first Britpop album is Blur’s “Modern Life Is Rubbish”. The music press decided that 94 is “the birthyear” and I have to accept it.

   To my surprise, a lot has been said and written about this “musical movement” in the past few months. Some of it was positive, but the majority of what came to my attention was from mild critical to terribly (and unjust) withering. The funny thing is that most of it came either from the ones who actually created it (i.e. the british music press) or from people too young to have experienced what “Britpop” was.

  But really, what is Britpop?

To be honest, at first I got tempted to approach this subject in a more “academic" way but then, I realized that that's impossible. It’s too personal. To hell with objectivity then! Let’s reform the question:

What did Britpop mean to me?

In a few words, I could say it was the soundtrack and lifestyle of my youth. Away from home, missing a lot of things while trying to study something I hated, Britpop saved my life. It gave me moments of sheer happiness or sweet melancholia:

Mornings, waking up to “Casanova” by The Divine Comedy, afternoons with friends, listening to Rialto's debut album. Nights on my bed (alone or not) listening to anything by Suede. Concerts, trips to London, dancing. 

A lot of dancing!        

    Britpop shaped my youth days and somehow, kept me alive. But it was a few more things, too.

Britpop gave me a choice. The choice to be part of the “alternative youth” of the mid 90s and not to have to party (while searching for E) to a repetitive beat, in a hell of computerized sounds. Rave was the main thing back then, but not all of us wanted to be ravers.

Then, it led me to the musical universe I still live in. Although, the majority saw the link between britpop and the swinging sixties, for me it was kind of a gateway to the wonderful world of 80s indie(-pop) and early 90s shoegaze. 

But humans are cruel creatures. By the time I felt myself an “expert” of the aforementioned genres (which of course I wasn’t), I tried to kill everything that was “Britpop” in me.

I remember, it was around 2000 at a (guess what…) Britpop party in Cologne when I met S., a wonderful person – short time girlfriend and still someone I can call a “fabulous friend”. We drank and danced and drank again. On the way back from the club we were talking about music.

-“Look S., I’m definitely NOT a Britpopper…”

-“Yeah, me (neither)…”, she replied.

But we both were. And I’m very proud of it. 

I think S. is proud too...

SATURDAY NIGHT

Well, sometimes it's better to write about the things that bother you when you are still in anger. Just like I was a few days ago, when Miss Zombiedust and Raccoon in the city asked me to write about what made me regret deciding to head downtown for the space lady gig after a great Sunday afternoon meeting with friends.

But now it’s Saturday night and while “wild geese” ( the drums’ latest album wonderful closer) is melting me away (ok, together with this awful sogginess), I can’t trace any anger in me. And you bet I was angry…

I wanted to write about crudeness. But honestly, don’t we experience crudeness everyday and everywhere in Greece of 2014?

And how many times don’t WE get rude without noticing? Or, even worse, without wanting to notice? I wanted to write about people being at a gig for all the wrong reasons. But hey, didn’t I go there just “for the company”? Or, isn’t it a “wrong reason”? Ha, I’m confused. At least, I sat there in a corner and (I guess) I wasn’t that annoying…

Is this maybe a kind of compromise? A compromise that often comes to soften my anger? A compromise with things I hate, but obviously won’t change? Or is it something else? Is it maybe that I feel ashamed to point the finger at others?

Wait a second! Do I accuse myself of complicity?

Well, I’ll try to translate a German pop song that for some reason comes to mind right now:

“…and then I'm getting up to go among people and ask myself, what can I do? I want to hate them and yet can't help but see a part of myself in everything they are”

Or am I just getting older?

NEW NEWS OF THE DAY || 16.9.014

The most interesting news of the day! 

It was a couple of days ago that i-tunes users around the world woke up owing a free U2 album without asking for it! Apple eventually decided to give U2's new album "Songs of Innocence" as a free gift to people that use i-tunes but they didn't imagine that this move would outrage some people that are not really into Bono and co. So after thousants of complaints, Apple decided to release a "U2 album removal tool' to satisfy the angry user's needs.

If you read our posts you should now by now that we, here at Pink Motel Records, are huge "Friends" fans! We couldn't be more happy when it was announced that the show turns 20 this year and to celebrate that anniversary, there will be a "Cetral Perk" spot in New York were "Friends" fans can have some coffee, buy "Friends" merch and meet the one and only james michael tyler (Gunther). We would love to be there for you Gunther...

7+2 indie bands that I truly miss!

They haven't changed the history of music. Actually, some of them haven't even sold more than 100.000 coppies of their records but they all meant (at some point of my life) something for me. This is a small list of bands that I used to love (some of them I still do) but have disappeared from the music scene...

...Maybe forever... 

The Good Shoes

This four piece band from Morden (London) came out of nowhere during the british indie rock explosion, made a great (and a mediocre) album and vanished from the face of earth! I remember falling in love with their 2007 debut album "Think Before You Speak" and their arty videos that came with it. I also remember people asking them if they were influenced by The Cure which is something that I never understood. Another thing, besides their music, that has been stuck in my mind is something they once said in an interview when they were asked about their hometown. 

"The only reason that someone ever goes to Morden is that he has fallen asleep in the subway"

As a suburban kid, I could totally understand that! 

Where are they now?

Probably getting master degrees on Art or working on their first exhibitions. It's a pitty that they haven't made new music since 2010 though...

The Decemberists

Ok, they are still around but their fame nowadays is nothing compared with their mid 00's pick! The Decemberists had great songs and at some point the same amount of hype that Arcade Fire had with their first two albums. The thing is that The Decemberists had more good songs but failed to capitalize on fame. They still have time to turn this around though. 

Where are they now?

According to this article, they are making a new album which will be released in 2015.

Harlem

One of my favourites on this list. Harlem is one of those bands that don't seem to take their career (or anything) seriously. They self-released their first album "Free Drugs ;-)" in 2009 and then signed to Matador records who re-released their debut and their sophomore album entitled "Hippies". After that, they toured extensively and eventually disappeared (just like many more). "Hippies" is a great album (probably recorded live), it will not change your life but you will have some fun while listening to it.

Where are they now?

When we tried to book them for a show last year, their manager told us that he believes they have broken up. So we'll have to go with this. We have also read somewhere that they are all working on some new projects. We'll just have to wait and see.

Art Brut 

There was a period,between 2006 and 2008, that Eddie Argos was EVERYWHERE! It's strange that he didn't present the Oscars or something at that point! His band, Art Brut where the next big thing and we were more than happy for them! But, in times not that far away,if you take a walk down at Camden street in London and start asking people about Art Brut or Argos himself, you'll be surprised by the fact that it's like they never existed. I loved this band because they were full of energy and sarcastic towards modern art and music scene. The only problem is that they never seemed to mind about taking their sound to the next level.

  Where are they now?

Can't tell. They haven't released new music since 2011. Eddie Argos lives in Berlin with his kid and parter and spends his time forming new projects and painting!

The Long Blondes 

Was never a big fan until I saw them live. They were amazing, had great songs and a cool stage presence. Unfortunately their were extremely unlucky. Their guitarist, Dorian Cox, suffered from a stroke in 2008 and they were forced to break up due to him not being sure if he would ever be able to perform again. Hope that he feels better these days and why not? Make a reunion at some point. 

Where are they now?

Besides Cox, the rest of the band members went on to form and join other bands.

Larrikin Love

They never made it big but had great songs and a cool frontman. They probably broke up for the same reason that most small indie bands do, money... 

Where are they now?

Last time I checked, their singer was the guitarist of Hole (!!!) and the others had joined other bands.

The Holloways 

Loved them because of their song "Generator" and because they once stopped a show just to convience the venue's bouncers not to throw out a member of the audience who misbehaved. They were fun, powerfull, half ska, half indie and probably a fun live act. I always loved their "always look on the bright side of life" attitude with lyrics like:

 "I don't live in poverty, I got a little bit of money

And I've got a healthy body

I'm not going to let stuff get me upset

And I won't let all the little things get me depressed"

Where are they now?

No idea!

It's official, iPod classic production came to an end. Thirteen years after its appearence and market domination, it's time for good old iPod to meet its good friends, Walkman - Discman and Mini disc in technology heaven (and probably in many future museums)!

In other, technology oriented, news, Sims 4 is out and it's amazing! It is so good that a user named Ian Roach recreated some famous sitcom living rooms and houses and posted them on the internet for all of us fans to see! We'll start today with an tweet "attack" a fan of Harry Potter started against the author J.K. Rowling concerning the sexual preferences of Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore. Rowling had revealed once that he always thought of Albus Dumbledore as a gay person. A fan wrote the following to the author via,his now deleted, twitter account ""Once u revealed Dumbledore was homosexual I stopped being a fan, nice how u blindsided us with that one. Enjoy your billion $."

J.K. Rowling responded:

"I advise you to start following Brian Souter at once. He's much more your kind of person."

If you happen to live in New York, you can visit the Museum of the City of New York and witness an amazing exhibition of the advertising works of Mac Conner. Born in 1913 Mac Conner is considered to be one of the "original Mad Men" creating numerous advertising illustrations for magazines such as, Cosmopolitan , Good Housekeeping and many more. Amazing handmade pieces of art that defined the 50's as a whole advertising era.

Ariel Pink announced the release of his 10th studio album but this time he will go (for the first time) under the name of just Ariel Pink and not Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti. The American songwriter revealed that this one will be a double album entitled "Pom Pom". You can listen to "Put your number on my phone", the first song out of the album, below:

This week is a good one regarding the new releases! 

We cannot believe that we are getting a new Death From Above 1979 album almost a decade after their debut! The Canadian band will be releasing their second album entitled "The Physical World". The Dance/Punk duo had been inactive from 2006 to 2011 when they reformed to tour and "try" some new songs on the road.

Other interesting new releases coming up this week from: The Kooks, Tricky, Karen - O, Interpol, AVI Buffalo and many more!

Last but not least, The Edgar Allan Poe Foundation  have just announced that a life-sized Edgar Allan Poe statue will be placed (and unveiled on October 5th) in Boston, the legendary poet's birthplace. In order to honor the poet (and of course, present the statue to the public), there will be music and of course poetry reading during the statue presentation! An interesting fact is that there had been 265 proposals made to The Edgar Allan Poe Foundation concerning the statue. The predominant was that of sculptor  Stefanie Rocknak that goes by the title "Poe Returning to Boston".

The most interesting news of the day! 

The talk of the past couple of days has to be the legale battle between Disney and progressive house producer deadmau5. Disney has filed a lawsuit in which they are trying to block the Canadian musician from using his trademark logo/mask called the “mau5head”. The musician has now replied via twitter saying that he is not willing to be bullied by Disney and that he will fight for his right to use his logo. 

Disney thinks you might confuse an established electronic musician / performer with a cartoon mouse. That's how stupid they think you are.

In other news, Courtney Love has revealed that we might be seeing a Hole reunion in 2015! In this interview for PAPERMAG Love revealed her plans concerning Hole's classic line up reunion, her acting and her bandmates. We'll have to wait and see.

Australian rockers The Vines have just released their new album entitled "WICKED NATURE". The band's new album was crowd funded and Craig Nicholls, the band's mastermind, dedicated it to all the fans via Facebook.

We kept the best one for the end. Since we are into 90's nostalgia, it would be impossible for us to leave out "The Little Rascals" cast reunion in honor of the film's 20th anniversary. The original cast reunited to recreate the poster of the movie plus some moments from the movie. Alfa Alfa is back!
