One thing I absolutely despise is when television feels the need to add a weird sibling dynamic. They did this in Wednesday with Isaac and Francoise, having that underlying icky feeling in their dynamic that you just can’t ignore. It always rubs me the wrong way because why are we doing that? Why can’t these siblings just be protective over each other and it not be like they’re in love?

Wednesday season two spoilers under the cut

The aviator woman could have been such a cool villain up to the end but they killed her off as soon as they could so they could have less storylines.

Even following the other outcasts in Willow Hill could have been interesting but they also killed all of them before even diving into that plot line.

They didn’t even have Tyler’s mom try to make up for the wrong she did before killing her too! And if they hadn’t had the Hyde fight, we could have seen more of Pugsley’s powers.

If you as writers are unable to give a proper ending to each of your subplots and storylines, then maybe you shouldn’t have 15 different subplots and storylines

the public reaction to i saw the tv glow is like a perfect case study into how cis people take up queer spaces and unknowingly mock and enjoy trans suffering. sitting in the theater, i had a pit in my stomach the entire time. so many times, i would tear up and then someone else in the theater would laugh. and i wouldn’t cry because how would they look at me when the lights came back on? because they don’t see it. they don’t see the pain. they think it’s funny. i left the theater completely silent, not saying a word to my boyfriend and he didn’t say a word to me until partway into the drive home. the people around us immediately got to picking it apart, explaining what it all meant to each other, dumbing it down, making theories. cis people see the the movie, just like transness, as something to debate. a conversation. something to dissect because it makes them uncomfortable if they don’t understand it in their easily digestible way.

Because WHAT DO YOU MEAN she screamed for help to these people, essentially begging them to see her. Begging them to help her because she feels as though she’s dying. Because she hasn’t ever been herself and she needs to be because not being herself is LITERALLY killing her.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN she’s screaming for help and acceptance but these people IGNORE her.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN she goes around apologizing. “Sorry. Ignore me” because that’s what people do when trans people scream for help and acceptance. They ignore. And so the trans people never feel quite right in themselves because no one is there to help them

I Saw the TV Glow is such a uniquely, devastatingly queer story. Two queer kids trapped in suburbia. Both of them sensing something isn’t quite right with their lives. Both of them knowing that wrongness could kill them. One of them getting out, trying on new names, new places, new ways of being. Trying to claw her way to fully understanding herself, trying to grasp the true reality of her existence. Succeeding. Going back to help the other, to try so desperately to rescue an old friend, to show the path forward. Being called crazy. Because, to someone who hasn’t gotten out, even trying seems crazy. Feels crazy. Looks, on the surface, like dying.

And to have that other queer kid be so terrified of the internal revolution that is accepting himself that he inadvertently stays buried. Stays in a situation that will suffocate him. Choke the life out of him. Choke the joy out of him. Have him so terrified of possibly being crazy that he, instead, lives with a repression so extreme, it quite literally is killing him. And still, still, he apologizes for it. Apologizes over and over and over, to people who don’t see him. Who never have. Who never will. Because it’s better than being crazy. Because it’s safer than digging his way out. Killing the image everyone sees to rise again as something free and true and authentic. My god. My god, this movie. It shattered me.

so much of the horror genre is informed by the metaphor of queer/transness as monstrousness. especially emphasizing the amount of horror that depends on the audience's repulsion at seeing a human body changing into a new, other body. I Saw the TV Glow is about the horror of NOT transitioning. the horror of static. the horror of looking into yourself and being terrified of what you see. the horror of seeing who you are and choosing to do nothing about it. the horror of looking away. and by god is it terrifying.
