I'm deeply immersed, mentally, in the idea of an HR AU where Shane *does* go first in the draft to Boston and Ilya goes second to the Metros.
Shane needs friends who will push him to stretch his wings (something Hayden would never do, as much as I adore the love shared between Hayden, Jacki and Shane). I think the straight forward linguistics of the NE in the US would do Shane a world of good. I think having Marly and St Simon and Conners push and push him to go out and let loose and ACTUALLY MEAN IT, not just so they can make fun of him for "failing" would do him a world of good. I think being further away from his mom (I LOVE Yuna, but we all need time to grow away from the direct supervision of our parents) would do Shane good.
I also just think that there's something about the culture of the US American northeast that would really vibe with Shane's inner chaos demon. Boston is def gay friendly, but no one expects you to be gentle if you're gay there.
Plus! The move to Ottawa wouldn't really raise any eyebrows. Shane, as a veteran, highly skilled player and native Ottowan, would make sense moving there to try to rebuild his hometown team.
I also think Boston would shape him in a way that Montreal never could. He'd be more straightforward, he'd be more brutal, he'd be beautifully obstinate when Ilya tried to pull some bullshit. But maybe most importantly, he'd have other Russian players around in his daily life, so he'd have a much better and much earlier grasp of what it means for Ilya to return home each summer (and probably learning a lot of Russian from his teammates to chirp Ilya in the ice with).
Additionally, Ilya would already have lived in Canada for several years by the time they decided to move closer to one another-- possibly even Ilya has been spending a week or two every summer at the cottage since it was built before going home to Russia-- because people are much less likely to remark on him visiting a nearby Canadian city when he already lives in the country.
Anyway, it's ripe with great nuance that would completely change their dynamic, and I love that.

I think it's so funny how we bred JOBS into dogs. I have two shih tzus and they were bred to be lap dogs. All they care about is looking cute and cuddling with people. Meanwhile my grandma has a border collie and that dog needs to feel so useful all the time, he acts like he will pass away if he doesn't have a job to do constantly
On one hand this is extremely fucking funny, but on the other hand, it really boggles my mind how many people punish their dogs for just… doing the thing they were bred to do.
Your husky isn’t “hyperactive”, it’s bred to pull sleds for 8 hours straight and you have it in a 400 sq ft yard.
Your English sheepdog isn’t “pushy”, it’s bred to herd sheep, and you have neither to space nor the herd to allow it.
Your terrier isn’t “nippy”, it’s bred to kill rats and your hamster looks a hell of a lot like one.
Your Catahoula isn’t “mean to animals”, it’s bred to hunt any and all animals smaller than it, and you didn’t acclimate it to your cat.
Your Lhasa Apso isn’t “yappy”, it’s bred to bark at any tiny noise and alert watchmen to intruders
Like Jesus Christ, if you can’t provide an environment where your dog can’t fulfill its literal life purpose, maybe?? Don’t get that dog??? And if you do, maybe know the breed characteristics so you can redirect those traits into more constructive outlets????
Both your most common doodle's parts (labra and golden) want to hunt and retrieve water birds so the best suggestion I can give y'all is congratulations on your new duck hunting hobby.
#people will overlook the perfect breeds to suit their needs based on just their looks#and get a work dog because it looks cool

Any time someone sees Herschel and says "AWWW I want a Corgi <3" (because he is Very Cute (TM)), I immediately reply: "Do not get a Corgi unless you have a job for it to do. They were bred to bully livestock across the hills of Wales. This is basically a Border Collie that knows he is cute enough to get away with murder. If you get one and it doesn't have a job, it will apply its livestock-bullying instincts to YOU. Herschel's job specifically is to help manage my crippling ADHD, because I don't have a bull for him to micromanage." This gets me odd looks at the home depot but it does get the point across.
Me, every time someone says they want a dachshund because they're so cute: please, I beg of you, do not. They are the worst. He will not stop playing Ball ™️ because Ball is Life (by which I mean Ball is Job because dachshunds were BRED TO HUNT).
When he was a young pup, he would go for hours long hikes and runs with his auntie and come home and ask to play ball immediately.
They are SO STUBBORN. It took me FIVE YEARS to potty train him, and it's still a battle with every new space we're in.
This dog is the love of my life, and I regularly want to throw him out the window (I would never).
But also he has literally kept me alive, so mostly I'm really glad he was bred that way. And that I am sometimes also his Job, even if Ball always comes before me. 😂

Every single person I knew (past tense) who has drowned was "a strong swimmer." Water in the wild does not care how good you are at swimming.
I mean this with all due respect:
You are not going to pass a skillcheck against a rip current once it has you.
Waves will not bow to your physical prowess no matter how impressive.
Shock does not care that you used to be on your school swim team.
If you hit your head, being good at swimming isn't going to turn you face-up while you're unconscious.
You may be unable to return to shore. Rescue may be unable to find you quickly.
Scheduling this for when weather starts warming up. Be careful swimming this summer

My therapist, who specializes in adults with ADHD, recently told me that all of her clients need a three day crashout period after a big life change. Finish the semester? Crashout. Change jobs? Crashout. Go on a really cool, really relaxing vacation? Crashout the moment you get home.
It's true of literally all of her clients. She works with a lot of them to put systems in place so that their crashouts are only three days. This includes the high-powered execs who travel regularly for work. It does not matter how successful or high functioning they are - they have ADHD, and a crashout is just part of the process of living with it.
I'm sharing this with all you ADHD friends out there, just in case you (like me) start shaming yourself if your crashout lasts more than one day. It turns out three days is kind of the best case scenario. Be kind to yourselves!
