One thing about this rewatch is that I'm beginning to understand how much Sam just does not know his brother, and how much Sam's perception of Dean bleeds through to the viewers. I'm up to 1x06 and the most Dean has lent into the 'womaniser' role that Sam expects of him is a comment about a waitress, every other instance that Sam says something about Dean being a womanizer is purely Dean being around an attractive woman and having a genuine conversation with her and it's the women that pursue him, both times he's been kissed have been pretty chaste but the note worthy thing about both is that Dean is flustered by both of them because they're unexpected and he's not a womaniser, he doesn't know how to react.
The thing is, Dean takes his cues from Sam, Sam says Dean hates kids and Dean jokes about not knowing any kids but he readily connects with Lucas and it's Sam that forms an attachment to the 'pretty victim' of the week in 1x03. Sam implies that Dean is emotionally immature, and Dean jokes about chick flick moments but it's Dean who is trying to initiate conversation with Sam about his nightmares, Dean who is cutting to the vulnerability when he tells Sam that Jessica was not his fault. Sam judges Dean for not taking care of himself (notably what he eats but that's a whole other thing) but it's Sam that's playing fast and loose with his sleep schedule, Sam who exists solely on coffee, and Sam who's dismissive when Dean is concerned about it. I think Dean is so used to playing into the role he's given in any situation but especially with his family that he shrugs on Sam's perception of him like he does John's leather jacket, because it's easy to be the shithead older brother, it's easy to be the person people expect him to be and he's probably learnt that nobody really wants the lonely, conflicted, complicated person he actually is because that's not easy and Dean's a peacekeeper.
are we far enough out of the 2010s that I can say that a lot of what was getting framed as intentional queerbaiting in the big Tumblr Popular shows was definitely just writers making homophobic jokes bc they thought the idea of a character being gay was funny rather than any attempted implication that a character might be gay

Dean was trying to save him from the 2008 market crash. Best big brother everrrrrr
