Museum security guard 1: Wait, did you hear something?
Museum security guard 2: Yeah, I think it came from the gift shop.

This is oddly specific.
seems that Chrome has around 60-65% market share, so itās not totally dominating the market yet but itās worrying that weāre basically reliant on Apple and Microsoft to hold the line.
Does Firefox not count for anything?
about 10% and falling, but perhaps that can change, I just donāt see how.
Chrome edging towards 70% on desktop, Microsoft has thrown in the towel, Safari obviously rules iOS, Firefox exists only as insurance for Chrome.

PLEASE install firefox as a mobile browser and then run adblock on your mobile browser itās so good I promise.
Look.
Look.
I know Iām a total grind about open source stuff but browsers are the PERFECT place to learn to love open source software and for so long FireFox was a major part of the browser market and sometimes if you want to see what kind of fuckery google is up to it helps to see the kinds of things they block in firefox and just
Thereās an organization that makes free, excellent, safe software that doesnāt collect and market your data but for some reason two thirds of the world uses a google product and most of the leftover population uses apple and just
I promise, firefox is so good - the extensions are incredible look - I can use lightbeam to see what sites I use and how they connect to other sites (bottom right should give you an idea how much time I spend on tumblr)
or I can look at ublock origin and see that itās blocked over 2 million requests since I installed it or I can run the facebook container extension and stop facebook from tracking me and you know what I bet you can do a lot of that on chrome too but youāre doing that while chrome itself is tracking you and gobbling up your activity for google and
firefox is so fuckin great and itās such a great ambassador for other open source projects please be a big old fuckin nerd with me and use firefox and run a bunch of funky extensions and customize the fuck out of your web experience.

@argumate talked about how movies work hard to make fascism look āhideous and repellent in a visual sense.ā It is true that movies do this, but reality does not.
Real fascism is the exact opposite of hideous and repellent in a visual sense. Real fascism looks awesome. Samuel Delany (a wise man) said (Iirc) āFascism looks great and feels bad; liberty looks like a mess and feels good.ā
This makes me suspicious of any utopias that arenāt moderately messy and disorganized in surface appearance.
I think itās very important to note that democracy looks like shit, I mean really, you have tons of people arguing back and forth and calling each other names and disagreeing on fundamental issues instead of all marching in lockstep (figuratively or literally) so itās very natural to look at it and think well this sucks, things are obviously going better when you have a strong leader everyone agrees with and everything is harmonious.
āHumanity has done amazing things by just muddling through, arguing and complaining and fighting and negotiating. Itās messy and undignified, but itās when weāre at our best, because everyone gets to have a voice in it. Even if everyone else is trying to shout it down. Whenever thereās just one voice that matters, something terrible comes out of it.ā

iām just pondering at how many times i read in a fantasy or scifi novel, when i was younger, some setup where the narrator helpfully explained that evil would always fail because it was inherently disunited; that factions of evil would always fight and struggle against themselves and leave opportunities for good to swoop in and destroy them with their unity. and i as a reader would nod sagely because, of course it is true. everyone whoās good should be able to agree that good is good.
and, well, as i grew up and witnessed more of the world around me, and came to understand the necessity for people to be allowed to have their own priorities and their own values and ā
it made me wonder about the worldviews of some of those authors who saw uniformity as a marker of good and diversity as a marker of evil, thatās all
Revengers assemble , and close ups :)

I've heard that reptiles can't form bonds with people. Idk if that was something from like, pet stores who didn't know/want to care properly for reptiles or what. Is this true? Or is it something that we didn't use to think could happen, but we know more now? Like how we know more now that fish can have fun or play.
it depends on what you mean by "form bonds!"
if you mean "form a pack/clan bond with you using happy brain chemicals", then no. that's strictly a mammal/bird thing.
but, if you mean "recognizes you as an individual and a place of safety, tolerates interactions with you that absolutely would not happen in the wild and even initiates those interactions with you voluntarily" then congrats! fish, frogs, and reptiles absolutely CAN do that!
both of these types of bonding are extremely meaningful to their respective animals and one isn't inherently better than the other, just make sure you adjust your expectations to fit your pet.
I had a black rat snake which I thought hated me... until I saw them interact with an *unfamiliar* human. There was blood.
Love is a direction, not an emotion, and for some beings Love just looks like a lack of blood. congratulations I hope you were happy with them
Bugs can't form bonds with their humans but they can become habituated to your smell and recognize you as a non-threat. And honestly? For a fragile little prey animal with an incomprehensibly different brain structure than that of mammals? That's as good as love in my book :)

THANKS, I LOVE YOU: there is a bus driver out there who thinks i had a very weird morning and heās right
just two days ago, i was thinking,Ā āyou know what i havenāt done in a while? write a story about some stupid and embarrassing thing iāve done. i wonder if this is because iām twenty-seven and no longer a bumbling idiot who canāt make it through her day without bringing shame on her family?ā
haha! said the universe. this bitch really thinks!!!!!
so this morning i was riding the bus to work, because iām a grown up, who has a job, and i must take not one but two busses to get there. and i get off the first bus feeling a lot of hope for not just the day but the whole week. last week was cloudy and overcast, but this week! this week is going to be different. itās sunny. iām going to be productive. iām going to be focused. iām going to get things done.
spoiler: iām going to abandon all these plans immediately.
i reach into my pocket to retrieve my wallet, which has my transit pass in it, and realize: itās not there. it is also not in my other pocket. it is also not in my gym bag.
it is still on the bus.
you know that feeling when youāve lost something where like, just before you go to see if you lost it you already knowĀ that you lost it?
itās like how neo slows down time to dodge bullets in the matrixĀ except instead of being that, itās me realizing i have already done something incredibly stupid.
the problem with my wallet still being on the bus is that i myself am not still on the bus, which means that with every second, my wallet is getting farther away from me. this is distressing for many reasons but primarily iād say that i donāt like it when my money and i are parted. i donāt have a lot of money, but what i do have i like to keep a very close eye on, because i need it to live, you see. still, there are lots of other things in that wallet that i donāt want to be parted from:
my driversā license, which i donāt use to drive anymore but is a nice picture of me and is also the worldās most ANNOYING thing to replace,
my work credit card and ID to get into the building,
my ventra transit card,
a wine punchcard on which i am only THREE WINES away from a $1 bottle of wine, and
a little post-it with the combination to my gym lock, which i am too dumb to remember but which i desperately need if i ever want to retrieve my running shoes from my gym locker.
i mean ⦠yāall know that the only thing to do is chase that bus down. iām not gonna cross my fingers and hope my wallet makes it to the lost and found. i donāt have that kind of luck.
my outfit for today was very,Ā ā90s straight girl meets her boyfriendās sister and IMMEDIATELY becomes a lesbian,ā so i was wearing 5-inch heels that werenāt conducive to running, which means i did the only sensible thing there was to do and kicked them off so that i could chase the bus in my bareass feet down the streets of chicago.Ā
was thisĀ āsafeā????? no.
but was it liberating???? also no.
did my foot my foot bleed and did it probably contract the black plague????? FOLKS IT DID!!!Ā
anyway, there i went, sprinting down the sidewalk in my yellow floral romper and white jacket, heels in my hand, gym bag swinging behind me like a cartoonish ball & chain, and of course, because of who i am as a person, i almost immediately took a bad step.
friends, to say that i fell is to miss what happened, which is that i took an eight-foot vertical leap and did not land on my feet.
you know those cartoons where a cat gets scared and it jumps so far into the sky it touches the moon?
you know those videos of people with those water jetpacks where they canāt control them and they go rocketing through walls like the kool-aid man?
you know when a basketball player does that thing where theyāre gonna dunk but they just absolutely whiff and end up lying dazed on the basketball court while whole stadiums of people laugh at them?
āoh my god,ā someone yelled, maybe from their car, maybe from the bus stop, maybe literally god himself.
i looked up, dazed. there was a crowd of at least five people around me, all of them helping me to my feet, gathering my things. one very kind and very brave man ran out into traffic to retrieve my travel coffee mug, which ā shoutout to my hometownās endodontics practice, spilled not one single drop.Ā
āare you all right?ā one of the good samaritans asked.Ā āholy shit you were ā you were airborne for so long.ā
you know when your brain has been scrambled and you know thereās some way you need to be reacting but you canāt make your body react that way?Ā
i was like:Ā āi have to catch that bus.ā
āthere are other buses coming,ā Coffee Savior said.Ā ālike ā in just a couple minutes.ā
āno, i need that one,ā i said, for some reason not realizing that i ought to clarify that my wallet was on that bus. one of the women, very kindly and warmly, stepped in close to me and put her arm around my shoulders and said,Ā ābetween us girls, your boob is out.ā
i looked down. the strap of my jumpsuit had popped off my shoulder, and indeed, my boob was out. i zipped up my white (WHITE. IT WAS WHITE. WHY DID I WEAR WHITE TODAY? YOU NEVER WEAR WHITE AFTER LABOR DAY!!!) jacket to hide this problem, which feels like a problem for Later Molly to deal with.
i took my things back from them, put my heels in my hand, and inexplicably left them with a cry of,Ā āthanks, i love you,ā before sprinting off again.
āTHANKS, I LOVE YOU,ā Shouts Bloodied Area Woman To Crowd Of Strangers While Running Barefoot Through Urban Center
i thought iād become A Runner in the past few years by some weird fluky accident, but it turns out that iād done it specifically so that i could chase this bus through not one but TWO intersections, because just as i reached it both times the light turned green. but when youāre already bleeding for a cause, giving up just feels like a waste.
this is called the fallacy of sunk cost, and itās a stupid things human do that we shouldnāt.
i know this but i chased a bus for three blocks anyway and that just goes to show that the human mind is an enigma.
eventually, while turning a corner,Ā the bus driver noticed me. he slowed down, looking perturbed by how far my fortunes had fallen since the last time we saw each other ā which was less than five minutes agoĀ ā when i was, a) not bleeding, and b) not yelling at him.
he opened the door.
āi left my wallet,ā i explained.
he blinked at me, but before i could get on, a man from the back row came running up to the front, holding my wallet in his hand.Ā āyou left your wallet,ā he said, as if this would be news to me.
āyou left your wallet?ā asked the bus driver, in a tone that indicated what he meant was, why are you bleeding??????????
i took my wallet very gratefully from the other passenger.
i said,Ā āthanks. i love you,ā and the doors of the bus closed.
IT IS HERE
My hypothesis going in was that Scar would win due to the sheer number of Scar fans who act like repressed Victorian ladies who would faint at the sight of an ankle. This proved correct. Coming soon: the highlights reel for why people selected their hermit of choice! Stay tuned :]
(Fun fact: I asked several questions about demographics (gender, sexuality, shipping, etc) and not a SINGLE one was statistically significant except for Gem and lesbians. What can I say, the lesbians love her.)
Fanon Techno takes shit from no one ever, forces his values on people and uses the threat of the syndicate at the slightest provocation.
Canon Techno is cowering in the sewers hiding from people even those who donāt actually oppose him because heās not sure, starts an outreach book club for survivors of institutional oppression but would really prefer if people stopped using gifts he gave them for purposes heās morally opposed to.
Fanon Tommy is a delicate sweet flower child who just wants comfort and has never hurt anyone.
Canon Tommy is destroying everything, starting pyramid schemes and cults, placing his friends in mortal peril for personal gain, starting wars so that he has an excuse to take peopleās stuff and screaming the ears off of anyone who dares to suggest their experiences and comfort also matter.
Fanon Tubbo is a pushover who is manipulated by everyone and never makes his own choices.
Canon Tubbo is a terrifying strategist, and the ultimate decision maker on crucial moments and an entire 3 tiers up the civ tech tree from the rest of the server.
Fanon Dream is either a sadistic monster for no reason or a perfect planner who does everything for highly calculated reasons, usually very manipulative and successfully so.
Canon Dream plainly lays out what he wants, why he wants it and what exactly the consequence will be for not providing it. Generally willing to consider any reasonable effort at compromise, even symbolic ones. But also pretty quiet and secretive. Willing to call himself a villain and be ruthless when provoked, or when what he values is threatened.
Fanon Slime is a naĆÆve pure innocent who doesnāt understand basic events happening around him, slavishly loyal to Quackity.
Canon Slime is an ancient being with immense knowledge and excellent critical skills who is a bit physically and socially awkward and loyal through mutuality.
Fanon Ranboo is a confused, floundering, possessed amnesiac pushover.
Canon Ranboo is a sharp tongued snarkmaster, rarely afraid to express his preferences and interpretation but always hesitant to force them on others. With a strong grasp of his own values and a brave unwillingness to choose morality or factions over people. Who copes with his memory issues as systematically and experimentally as possible.
Fanon Ghostbur is useless and unable to understand the situation.
Canon Ghostbur is emotionally perceptive and communicative despite his amnesia, with a willingness to see the best in everybody but his former self. With occasionally starling insight and dedication.
I could go on. My general point is that most characters have more agency and more interesting flaws than we give them credit for. This happens in every fandom, itās pretty inevitable and not really a problem. Iām being salty.
I think the saddest part of this post is how many phenomenal characters I couldnāt put on this list because they donāt get enough fan discussion thatās about them specifically. Shout out to Eryn, Eret, Fundy, and Purpled to name some of my favorites.
I posted this as a joke and am cursed with every new addition.
But! I like that many of you have correctly noted that both sets of armor are perfectly serviceable AND have historical context. Geralt's leather armor isn't going to hurt him a bit, and the exaggerated muscle sculpturing IS 100% a hilarious design choice, but it's also one ancient cultures employed all the time. (Romans in particular loved this shit)
The problem with feminized tiddy armor that hugs each breast isn't that it's sexualized, but that it will kill you. Armor cupping each boob and having an indention in the middle of your chest means that any blow to the torso drives the mid-tit indention RIGHT INTO YOUR STERNUM. It's not decorative, it's arguably more dangerous than no armor at all. Meanwhile I'm looking at Geralt, and his flexible leather armor has minor intentions and is probably over a base plate, Roman style. He's not in danger he just wants to be cute.
Both Calenthe and Geralt are fully protected and you're doing amazing, sweetie.
Nothing will ever be as hilarious to me as discovering from bts interviews that Henry Cavill helped design that armor. That man knows what heās about.
Foreigners tend to assume that the big cultural confusions between Australians and most other countries are gonna be based on our food, or social services, or weather, or weird animals. But itās never that. In my experience, the real cultural confusions re: Australians are about The Respect Thing almost one hundred per cent of the time.
? I realize im proving your point but what
The broader Australian culture doesnāt, as a whole, have status-based respect. Some individual groups might, because theyāve brought it from other cultures theyāre involved in, but the general culture doesnāt. Thereās no sense that your boss or scout leader or the guy in charge of your country deserves more respect than you, or that you should behave differently to them than you would to any random person you know similarly well. (The very rare exceptions include ritualised settings, such as courtrooms, and for some reason the fact that children useĀ āMiss/Ms/Mrā honourifics for teachers at school.)Ā
I donāt mean Australians are aĀ āstick it to the man, fight back against those in powerā kind of people ā weāre generally not. And I donāt mean we have aĀ āweāre going to do the status thing but pretend we donāt and pretend to all be equal in mixed companyā thing that middle-class Americans do. I mean the status-respect system does not exist, and if you try to use it, it weirds people the fuck out at best, and insults them at worst. Treating someone most countries would say isĀ āaboveā you differently in Australia is basically telling that person that you hate them; itās sayingĀ āIām forced to interact with you due to our current circumstances but I donāt see you as a person and wonāt grant you the basic respect of treating you like an equalā. (When I was in America, I was constantly suppressing the instinct that random service people were sassing me because they overuse honourifics and were so keen to help me.)
This makes interacting with foreigners really baffling in a lot of circumstances. In university, my international friends would often describe Australians asĀ āfriendly, but very rudeā. They thought we were all arseholes because of the way we spoke to our PhD supervisors and soforth, and wouldnāt believe us when we explained that our behaviour was respectful and that being deferential would be weird and awkward and insulting to them. Learning Japanese had a similar problem; everyone in the class could get the concept of different levels of formality and deference in language, ans was happy to memorise the usage of various words for Japanese people, but using them on each other was super weird, and weād only ever use the most casual form of anything unless specifically instructed otherwise by the teacher.
The reason Iāve been thinking of this lately is because Iāve recently become aware that a lot of countries have like⦠a special respect for their countryās leaders? I donāt just meanĀ āyeah, that guy makes the rulesā, but that having that office makes them better than everyone else, somehow. Which I expect from countries with royal families, because Tradition, but Iāve recently found that Americans feel this way about their President, too. (Except the current one, who seems to be enough of a dick to break the system.) Like, if six Americans were in an aeroplane that was going down and there was only one parachute and one of the Americans was A Generic Non-Trump President, itās just assumed that that guy gets the parachute? Like heās automatically the life worth saving over the others, and theyād just give up their chance in favour of him? And thatās so weird to me. An Australian prime minister would have a 1 in 6 chance at the parachute; however the people decided,Ā āthis guy happens to be the leader of the countryā wouldnāt be a factor.Ā
When Americans donāt like a President, they usually feel the need to work in how heāsĀ ānot my presidentā, either through sheer denial, or by finding some way heās theoretically illegitimate (different ways votes are counted, wild conspiracy theories about birth country, etc.), and while making sure those rules are obeyed IS extremely important, Iāve recently noticed that part of the motivation seems to be that theyāre invested in whether heās Really The President because being the President somehow makes someone Special rather than just a normal dick whoās been put in charge of the group project. (You see the same thing inĀ āTHIS IS TRUMPāS AMERICA!ā, like him becoming President gives him superpowers or something).
This is getting off-topic. Point is, in Australia you can run into the Prime Minister and ask him to help you fix your phone and if heās not busy but refused to help you out heād be kind of a dick; of course he should help you out. And if I walk into your restaurant and you act like Iām a movie star and youāre going to be super attentive to my every need because Iām The Customer, Iām gonna get creeped out. Weāre suspicious and insulted by what most people in the world consider to be basic manners, and vice versa. And it makes interacting with foreigners super weird because I always feel like theyāve got some invisible heirarchical flowchart in the back of their minds that I donāt.
I have long noticed that Americans have absolutely the same cultural attitude to the President as they would to a serving monarchy. They just think they donāt on a technicality.
Can confirm that if I call someone āSir/Madamā I generally mean āassholeā (unless talking to an animal or tiny child) and that if I get called Maāam I feel like Iām being called the asshole, which made time in Atlanta, Georgia suoer weird.
Australians have a very good attitude to respect
ā¦so this explains why I have spent the last fourteen years low-grade pissed off at nearly every Australian I meet, because every time I try to be American Polite at them it pisses them off. And, for that matter, why my second boss here, the one I was so careful to be Formally Respectful of and always called āsir,ā took such an intense dislike to me.
Yeah, even if that boss understood that you were American and what that meant, their instincts wouldāve been screaming at them the whole time that you were being a dick. Itās a difficult thing for us to get used to even when we know the culture is differentā.
As a Brit visiting Australia, the most vivid experience I had of this is: in the UK itās really uncool to get into the passenger seat of a cab - youāre expected to get in the back. In Australia the reverse was apparently true.
⦠I am only just now realising that inAmerican and British movies and stuff, people donāt get in the passenger seat of a taxi.
covid update: youāre now meant to get in the back seat for social distancing and IT FEELS SO RUDE. sorry taxi person I AM NOT TRYING TO SHUN YOu just I know there are rules and weāre protecting each other. letās be intensely awkward for a while.
Reblogging this because I just remembered the time Molly Meldrum absolutely horrified Prince Charles by describing meeting the Queen as āI saw your mum last weekā.
One of my favorite travel books described humanity as, broadly speaking, having two types of culture: one where formal is respectful and informal is rude, and vice versa. Australian culture sees formality as hostile or unfriendly and familiarity as warmth. Itās decidedly not the case in USA as a whole, though as with any broad category the dichotomy changes as the group gets smaller.
The average modern Australian just doesnāt view āleadershipā as a quality that automatically garners respect, and that sort of reflects in our national history a bit.
Say, if you asked Americans who the first U.S. President was, Iām guessing like 98% would be able to tell you it was Washington. Most Australians would be able to tell you that as well, and probably list a few of the well-known others too: Lincoln, Nixon, Reagan etc. But if you asked Australians who the first Prime Minister of Australia was, Iād say less than 2% would be able to answer that correctly, (It was Sir Edmund Barton, but I had to look that up to confirm) because nobody cares.
Similiar story with our currency: American banknotes have a bunch of former presidents/politicians. The current Australian $5 note has the queen on it, but other than that weāve got a couple of poets/writers, a convict turned businesswoman, a humanitarian and founder of the Flying Doctors Service, an indigenous inventor, a Womenās Rights reformer, an opera singer and a WWI ANZAC commander on our notes (equal representation of men & women), and the coins have just got native animals on them. There isnāt that sense of glorifying our past political leaders at all.
See also: āTall poppy syndromeā, which weāre sort of renowned for.
Most Aussies of my generation would be able to tell you that the first prime minister was Edmond Barton, not because we care about past leaders but specifically because of this one ad that was on TV ALL THE TIME a couple of decades ago
But here you are in 2022, held prisoners by your government. You clearly have no respect for yourselves and refuse to fight back.
Iām baffled by this response because while I can think of several things I hate the government for, I canāt see how any of them can be classified as being āheld prisoners by our governmentā. Other people are being held prisoner by our government due to some absolutely disgusting refugee processing policies, is that what you mean?
Iām just super interested in knowing if this attitude of respect in Australia also applies to movie stars or really famous singers⦠say, would you casually ask Chris Hemsworth or Nicole Kidman to fix your phone too?
Individual people can get starstruck, but in general yes. A movie star (who isnāt at work at the moment) is Just A Guy unless youāre a particular fan of theirs. Like, if I met Marc Evan Jackson Iād be nervous because I am specifically a fan of Marc Evan Jackson, but if I met Chris Hemsworth in a shop then thatās just a guy. Foreign famous people who visit Australia are often blindsided by this attitude.
#classism is not inherent#NZ has a similar approach#being a leader to does not garner inherent respect#however#it features heavily in fantasy#which makes larps interesting to run#because on top of consent#nz larpers find it difficult to rp that over extended periodsĀ
As an Aussie who used to larp V:tR I know that feel
You had a couple of hardcore players doing stuff like taking leadership positions in the Invictus or the Sanctum but on the whole the actual roleplaying part of our political system was a fucking mess
Itās easy to look at paper and say āok so these characters should mostly do what this guy says, at least in publicā. Itās another thing entirely to roleplay the actual expected behaviour for hours at a time without forgetting or fucking it up.
See also: this post about learning German, and also why calling someone a āmad cuntā is positive, āfuckinā cuntā is negative, and āfuckinā mad cuntā is a badge of honour.
⦠And it just suddenly hit me that Princes lording it over you in the games isnāt supposed to be presented as dystopic and degrading, thatās just my inner Australian coming out.
Like I legit thought that being deferential towards a Prince was part of the āthis is why you should hate the Camarillaā thing but no thatās just. Thatās just. Thatās just how people ACT. Iām sure itās exaggerated a bit because of how patronising and demeaning the Princes are but itās hitting me that Iām not actually SUPPOSED to feel as degraded as I do every time I play one of the games.
Even Lettow Kaminsky, who was going out of his way to be respectful and kind, made me feel this way!
Larping Vampire in Australia is weird because everyone acts like a Carthian by default and has to put in specific effort to be anything except āCarthian with an aesthetic and a powersetā, so you have like 2 experienced and dedicated players per covenant trying to hold the social order together while everyone else has to keep reminding themselves āno you DESERVE DEFERENCE itās how this fantasy world worksā
CW: Homophobic and sex-worker-phobic slurs. One notable time Australian and American respect cultures came into some pretty major conflict was that time Australia kidnapped Frank Sinatra because he called our reporters ābums, parasites, fags, and buck-and-a-half hookersā. He was particularly harsh about female reporters, and in one incident one of his bodyguards actually choked a cameraman with an electrical cable. Why? Because the reporters here didnāt give him the respect he thought he deserved. He was a Big Man with Big Time Friends, they shouldnāt write honestly about his Mafia ties or cheating scandals or shit like that.
Crab Bucket Syndrome is when you drag someone down because they dare to try to escape or rise about their situation. In Australia we have something that might seem similar on the surface, but is pretty distinct: Tall Poppy Syndrome. Weāre okay with people being rich and famous, itās even seen as inspirational and aspirational. But donāt you ever dare act like it makes you better than the rest of us.
The Australia Theatrical and Amusement Employees Union (lighting, staging, set musicians, etc) announced a strike. If Sinatra tried to play, heād be doing it in the dark and completely solo. This got his concerts cancelled.
The Transport Workers Union ensured all his flights were grounded. The head of the Australian Council of Trade Unions, Bob Hawke (who later became Prime Minister) said āIf you donāt apologize, your stay in this country could be indefinite. You wonāt be allowed to leave Australia unless you can walk on water.ā
(A few years later the ACTU also arranged action against South Africaās sporting teams in protest of Apartheid).
Sinatra actually called up the son of the then-PM Gough Whitlam, to get him in touch with Gough himself. The PMās response was basically to point out that even the PM doesnāt have the power to stop the unions. Sinatra had to either go through Hawke or basically be a prisoner.
According to legend, Hawke told Sinatra something along the lines of āYouāre what we call a ātall poppyā. You know what we do to tall poppies in Australia? We cut their fucken heads off!ā Probably not true, but it makes for a good story. Eventually Hawke and Sinatra brokered a nonpology of sorts over a bottle of cognac and some fat cigars so Sinatra could fuck off as quickly as possible.
Side note: One day one of our Prime Ministers, Harold Holt, went swimming in the ocean and was never seen again. We memorialised him⦠by naming a swimming pool after him. Disappearing without a trace or making a swift departure is also called āDoing a Harry Holtā.
they should invent water for men
Good news OP
While this is a funny joke, as far as I'm aware this company is actually pretty cool, and the purpose behind the Liquid Death (sparkling or still) water is quite wholesome.
Part of the reason for it being a tallboy is that aluminum cans are more recyclable than water bottles, potentially infinitely so, while water bottles either have a limited amount of recyclability potential or aren't actually recyclable at all.
The other reason is to literally make it more fun and appealing to drink something other than alcohol at concert venues. Part of getting over addiction or even getting away from a culture that is doing you harm is, in the US at least, heavily associated with becoming "no fun". The idea here is to make water as fun in terms of packaging as alcohol, so people who are going sober, who can't drink, or who are the Designated Driver don't have to feel like they're relegated to the "no fun zone" forever and still get to order something with a silly name. We had these at my brother's wedding as an alcohol alternative and tbh it was really neat.
From the Liquid Death website:
"Most products in the health and wellness space are all marketed with āaspirationalā fitness models and airbrushed celebrities.Ā And many of us are tired of it.Ā Why should unhealthy products be the onlyĀ brands with āpermissionā to be loud, fun, and weird? And let's be honest,Ā almost all marketing and branding is just theater. So weāre going toĀ treat our theater like a movie theater and have more fun with it."
So yeah! If you want a neat alternative to buying bottled water, this isn't a bad alternative. Also, if you feel like you miss the feeling of opening a can of beer and drinking one, especially with carbonation, this could help curb the urge without having to substitute soda.
Oh. So it was a stand against single use plastic, alcoholism culture, and eating disorders disguised as fitness.
