Opportunities for Writers
Not sure if this would be of interest to people but wanted to share anyway. Sometimes writing and speaking out is one way to combat hate: We have 5 openings for new regular contributors for Rose Water Magazine. To apply for a regular contributor position send a resume and samples of your work to [email protected]. This magazine was created 4 years ago to help those who, like me, were talented and passionate but also wanted to build a portfolio. There are people who contribute because they don't know where to start in publishing, some who are looking for a little guidance for their writing, or some who just want a little extracurricular feminism in their life. We've built a great team of professional editors and social media mavens, and we all work together to create a supportive, nurturing, and educational environment. We will workshop your submissions with our editors and myself to ensure your work shines brightly. We do not charge submission or subscription fees. This magazine is a labor of love (fully funded by yours truly) and I know each of our contributors enjoy being part of our project and many have seen immense improvement in their work. Some have gone on to higher education in writing and many have been published in larger publications subsequently. I'm happy to answer any questions that you have. We've had our work published in Huffington Post, Jezebel, Bustle, NYPost and more.

Hi everyone! This is an illustrated guide I made as part of my co-admining work at The Middle Eastern Feminist on Facebook! It will be published there shortly. The technique that is displayed here is a genuine one used in psychology - I forgot the name and couldn’t find it again so if you know about it, feel free to tell me! Some could say: “Yes but you can use that technique for instances of harassment other than Islamophobic attacks!”, and my reply is: Sure! Please do so, it also works for other “types” of harassment of a lone person in a public space!! However I’m focusing on protecting Muslims here, as they have been very specific targets lately, and as a French Middle Eastern woman, I wanted to try and do something to raise awareness on how to help when such things happen before our eyes - that way one cannot say they “didn’t know what to do”! I’d like to insist on two things: 1) Do not, in any way, interact with the attacker. You must absolutely ignore them and focus entirely on the person being attacked! 2) Please make sure to always respect the wishes of the person you’re helping: whether they want you to leave quickly afterwards, or not! If you’re in a hurry escort them to a place where someone else can take over - call one of their friends, or one of yours, of if they want to, the police. It all depends on how they feel! For my fellow French-speakers: I will translate it in French and post it on my page as soon as I can :) Please don’t hesitate to share this guide as it could push a lot of people to overcome bystander syndrome!! Lots of love and stay safe!
Every single time I have ever been in a situation where someone (or myself) was being harassed and I didn’t act fast enough to do something about it, I left with a permanent blemish on my conscience that spurned me into action when similar situations came up in the future. This is great advice for a way to interject into a situation and quantifiably improve someone’s day. Take it from someone who’s made it through about a third of an average human lifespan, you will regret any situation you had the opportunity to do something and didn’t.
Hate crimes jumped up more than 40% in Britain after Brexit. Please don’t let that happen here. If you see something, say something.
Hi folks! I made the cover for the second printing of the Over The Garden Wall comic book, issue no. 2! Ask for it at your local comic book store!
Do you want the original sculpture I made for the cover photo? I’ll be giving it away! I’m posting this message on Tumblr, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, and I’ll be giving the sculpture away to someone who likes or reposts this message! Good luck, everybody!

Little steps
I know it's not a big deal but I just took the bus instead of a cab or light rail from work and it feels like the biggest accomplishment. I'm always terrified of trying new things when it comes to finding my way around and I will put off figuring it out as much as possible. I got my ass up, bought a bus pass so I wouldn't have to carry exact change and figured out where to catch the bus. Maybe soon I'll even start driving again. (Something else I'm terrified of is driving in cities or on highways).

Orphan Black: The Feminist Show We Need?
Not so long ago, I stumbled upon an excellent post about how to make a non-sexist show, from the blog The Cutprice Guignol. The post lays out some of the major elements needed to truly make a feminist-worthy tv show. One of my favorite shows is Orphan Black, a sc-fi show, created by John Fawcett and Graeme Manson, starring Tatiana Maslany. This show is slowly (finally!) starting to gain…

I intern at the Maryland SPCA once a week. There are so many cats and dogs that need love or (even better) a good home. If you have time this Tuesday, December 1, please donate to them. They need all the extra resources and funding they can get!
