Comic writers love to say a realistic Steve Rogers would be a racist, violent bigot. I say a realistic Steve Rogers would have fallen into an intense religious psychosis by now.
If I was an old-school Irish-Catholic and gave up my body to ‘surpass human potential’, actively playing God, and the second I walked out of that machine the man who made the Super-Soldier-Serum was MURDERED IN FRONT OF ME I would immediately assume that’s an Omen. “I’m cursed now. A curse has been put on me. I’m fucked.”
Keeping this in mind lets go down the list:
Bucky is taken from him and made a prisoner of war
Steve gets Bucky back :D Bucky is then also killed in front of him
Steve kills himself (Suicide, a sin.) And comes back to life. (Immortality and evading Gods plan. MAJOR sin.)
Everyone is dead. The Howling Commandos. Howard. Bucky. Everyone.
Coulson: super fan and potential friend. Murdered.
Bucky’s back :D Bucky was tortured for 70 years. Bucky leaves.
Bucky’s back :D Bucky leaves, on the run from the government.
Bucky’s back :D Bucky leaves to enter cryo in Wakanda.
FINALLY Bucky’s back and nothing’s stopping them from being together :D
HALF OF THE UNIVERSE IS MURDERED INCLUDING BUCKY AND SAM.
Within the SAME HOUR that Half The Universe comes back Tony and Natasha are murdered.
Literally the only way Endgame makes sense to me is if the Century long nervous breakdown that’s been in the works finally catches up to Steve and he finally snaps. He assumes he’s cursed, as long as he has the serum everyone around him is doomed to be murdered and he needs to leave right now to keep the people he loves safe. The farthest place he can think to go is an entirely different timeline. He knows the exact date, time and cause of Peggy’s death and unless thew universe bends itself in half to kill her before her time, she should be safe.
Endgame aka: Steve’s brain snaps in half.
