Ner Narise
It's been a bit since I talked about learning Mando'a, so what have I been up to lately with my studies you ask? Still toiling away, but in a couple of different directions than previously.
I've recently joined a couple more Mando Discords. And in one, I've been making friends - some of which I talk with in Mando'a a bit, ibac ori'nuhu. Talking? Out loud?? To another person?!? OYA!
I've gotten a bit sporadic on my Miit be Tuur sentences, but when I do them they're a bit more complex than I used to do.
then:
"entye" "debt" "ENT-yey"
Kaysh entye beri.
His debt (is) paid.
now:
"kadal" "casualty" "kah-DAHL"
Kyrbej baviinir ti kadale. Cuun Jetiise al'verdese di'kutla.
(The) battlefield (is) scattered with casualties. Our Jedi commanders (were) useless.
I'm not writing novels or anything, in fairness it'd be hard for nearly anybody to do that lol, but I'm still going to count it as progress.
I bounce around different translations, mostly songs or movie/tv quotes. Somethings are very mandokarla, and others go a bit farther afield. Recently I did a few quotes from Pulp Fiction, and this morning I was working on a Harry Styles song, lol. It's an interesting, if a little weird, collection. Usually it starts with my hearing or thinking of something & going "hey! I have the words to say that!". I find myself translating things in my head throughout my day & that keeps things interesting.
As you know, I did my first original piece directly into Mando'a recently & that was a pretty great experience. My last piece was older subject matter specifically because it lent itself to simpler sentences. I sometimes over complicate things. That seemed both a good habit to try & improve upon, and the best way to get Mando'a from scratch out with some semblance of clarity. I want to go again, I'm just not sure what to write about next time.
Cerashi, that's what's up. Still working, still having things to work on. I've been trying to remember to double check my verbs, not park two nouns next to each other, uncomplicate my sentences a bit, and remember my parts of speech generally. Sha ca'nara ni aala sa di'kute, ni raani tug'yc. Ni slana chaaj'yc.
K'oyacyii anade.
Ner narise - literally 'my acts', vibes like 'what I've been up to
Ibac ori nuhu - that (is) really fun
Miit be Tuur - word of (the) day
Oya - wahoo, whoopie, etc. Literally 'let's hunt'
Mandokarla - having "the right stuff", showing Mandalorian virtues
Cerashi - btw, incidentally, anyway
Sha ca’nara ni aala sa di'kute, ni raani tug'yc. - when I feel like (an) idiot, I look (regard) again
Ni slana chaaj'yc - I (have) come far
K'oyacyii anade - hang in there everybody
i think about this tweet a lot
Fun fact: Mandalorians touch foreheads when they want to show affection but cant take off their helmets. It’s called a Keldabe kiss. (This is also an ironic term for straight up head butting someone.)
that makes this so much worse:
FYI Jengo Fett’s (Boba’s dad) head is still in that helmet
I know it’s essentially “affectionate head butting” but I’ve always found the concept of the Keldabe Kiss fascinating bc the actors who played Jango and young Boba Fett are Māori and in māori culture they have the hongi which is a traditional greeting of touching noses/foreheads
Like I know it’s probably not that deep but I’ve always wondering if maybe that partly inspired the above moment with Boba
this is why i always powder the fuck out of my forehead before going to a community meeting lol. you end up leaving foundation on 40 elders’ foreheads if u arent prepared lmao
just wanted to add that one of the writers for much of the mandalorian content to come out when Legends was still the Expanded Universe specifically understood the significance of the Fett actors being Māori and the importance of the hongi, and the “Keldabe Kiss” was a way of canonizing that in-universe.
so yes, it is that deep, and it was intentional.
Also (and I do realize this is very much besides the point but I feel like it’s important to know nonetheless) Jango’s head isn’t still in the helmet in that screenshot, you see the head fall out (in shadows on the sand; they don’t actually show the decapitated head on screen) when he’s first killed.
A thing which was probably included in the movie specifically so as to ensure that it was clear the head wasn’t in there during that heartbreaking and lovely shot.
And I'll be there on that journey.
Shereshir oya'cye, burc'ya.
Sieze the day, friend, cuz there may never be another.
Not Mando, but still a good idea...
So I posted something on Reddit just now that I thought I'd share here because it's applicable to so many things. The context is that I was replying to OP. They were lamenting the reaction they'd received upon showing their parents the show Andor. Op & her husband loved the show & had previously bonded over Rogue One. They had a lot of thoughts & feelings in regards to Andor paralleling RL just now, even going so far as to name their new baby Cassian, & wanted to share this with OP's folks.
It did not go well. The parents hated the show, hated the characters, hated the production values (and ok, the rest aside, but....me'ven?!? Andor is gorgeous!!) OP was understandably upset. When you share something you're excised about or inspired by with someone you love, it's not much fun when that person dumps osik all over it.
I spent a lot of my life getting things I loved either totally disregarded, or actively dumped on by someone in my life. Being told that things I loved were "garbage". That kinda thinking really does take a toll. It makes you feel like you, by extension, are garbage when your likes, thoughts & opinions are treated like that. And it encourages you to hide who you are & what you think. So, with that all in mind, I posted this in reply:
One way you & your husband can "fight the Empire" in the real world is to not let other people steal your joy. Your folks don't get it, and that sucks, but it's a them problem. Find beauty, strength & love in sources that mean something to you, then model that behavior for your boy.
Congrats on little Cassian.
She replied back that this made her feel better & brought her hope. If you're out there feeling like you have to hide who you are or what you love, if you're being made to feel less than, I hope this helps you too.
Find things to love, delight in your thoughts & opinions, see light in the darkness. Love to you all.
Me'ven - Mando'a for WTF
Osik - crap
star wars swear words and slang are so fun bc they sound enough like the real thing to be satisfying but also are different enough to make me feel mischievous like i'm in on a lil secret
calling someone a dickhead = boring, overused, eye-rollable
calling someone a di'kut = esoteric, elegant, makes me feel intelligent but also sounds enough like the real thing that they get the gist
tech: The mythosaurs didn’t rule Mandalore, they were just alive. Stop giving them credit for administration skills they didn’t have.
while we’re on the topic of boba’s mandalorian-ness, i would just like to inform y’all that in the expanded universe, a huge part of boba reconnecting with his mandalorian identity as an adult is him getting found-family’d by a canon-gay-married mandalorian couple (goran beviin and medrit vasuur) and it’s exactly as glorious as it sounds. highlights include:
boba gets invited to one of their family dinners and spends the whole time disassociating bc he’s never been to a large family gathering before and everyone is SO LOUD and their adopted kids are staring at him and he knows he’s coming off as a surly asshole and he can’t stop
when beviin and medrit find out boba is going to meet a jedi, medrit smiths him a new set of beskar, including a new piece to protect his neck, and beviin tags along to hover protectively around boba and shit-talk the jedi.
you know, like a true friend
early on, boba hears beviin is struggling financially and, while trying very hard to look preoccupied with weapons maintenance, casually offers to maybe send some bounty hunting work his way… not that he was interested in it himself… honestly he’s too busy rn… so this isn’t him being nice or anything–
beviin sees through this immediately and is touched by his friend’s concern for him
the second boba realizes beviin is touched by his concern for him, he HANGS UP ON THE POOR MAN MID-SENTENCE
“haha yes i’ve done a friendship thing and i’ve done it so subtly and stealthily that no one will ever kn– oh god he knows too much ABORT ABORT”
boba does eventually chill lol
beviin has a habit of affectionately referring to boba by the diminutive form of his name
forming the diminutive of someone’s name in mando’a is done by simply adding the suffix “‘ika”
bob’ika
boba experiences a gradual adjustment of “dude wtf” to “hmm this is fine actually” to “this is Our Thing and if anybody besides beviin ever tries to refer to me as that, i will beat them to death with their own arms”
beviin is also the only person allowed to make sarlacc jokes around him
“Why do you bail me out all the time, Goran? And don’t say it’s because it’s duty to the Mand'alor.“ “Because nobody can live the way you do and not notice how much it hurts.”
(THIS KILLS THE ME)
anyway, disney is too cowardly to include canon gay characters of any significance so i doubt we’ll ever see beviin or medrit in new canon. but they were there and they were some of boba fett’s most significant mandalorian connections in the expanded universe and more people should know about them.
I love Boba & his bestie. He’s been so alone for so long when he meets Beviin, and Beviin in turn is totally undazzled by the fearsome beroya or by his being Mand’alor. To Goran Beviin the famous Boba Fett, terror to chakaare & aruetiise everywhere is just Bob’ika. I think it’s really good for Boba.
If you want to see the pair in action check out the novella Boba Fett: A Practical Man, and the Legacy of the Force series of novels.
Beroya - bounty hunter
Chakaare - thieves, crooks, dirtbags basically.
Aruetiise - non Mandalorians
Decided I needed a strill, so I made one
Bonus puppy (is her name Kenobi? Yes. Yes it is)
With bonus Lily
Ori’copikla!! Kandosii’la!!
Ori’copikla - super cute
Kandosiikla - awesome
Sometimes my brain reminds me that, out of all the mandos who tried to put to words what it means to be a mando, you have the original resol’nare aka the 6 actions, which inspired the canons of honor, which in turn was inspiration for Tor Vizla’s Kyr’tsad (Death Watch) Manifesto, and Jaster Mereel’s Ori’ramikade (Supercommando) Codex.
And I think about the LENGTH differences between a single phrase of six core values, a group of canons, a manifesto and a codex. Like, I can’t stress enough that the reason we don’t have a canon Supercommando codex is because a codex is an entire book, a compilation of rules, lists, values, and priorities grouped together, organized, and put into book form.
And I think of the man who, upon seeing corruption right in front of him in the system he was apart of, his first response is to kill the superior officer who was apart of that corruption. Then when he’s been kicked out for killing a superior, and he sees that the corruption and injustice and dishonesty spread far beyond the Journeyman Protectors of Concord Dawn, that its everywhere in the galaxy, his response then is to write a fucking book.
It was that or nail his complaints on someone's door, and he had too many complaints.
I really want to read that book.
Baj'hibir
I got a new phone recently. It's got a heavier hand with its autocorrect feature than my old one, plus I'm having to train it up on all my Mando'a words. I just tried typing 'Mandalorian' in a reply somewhere & it instead tried handing me 'manslaughter'.
Gotta admit, that's closer to my target word than it usually gets me.
True Mando kids slapping tiny handprints on their clan member’s ships as a good luck blessing…
Ahhh my heart
I wonder if Boba's ship has his little handprints on the hull from when he was a child
And if Jaster's Legacy had Jango's little handprints
And if Grogu's little handprints will now be added to Din and Boba's ships
And if commandos and clone pilots trained by Mandos had their baby brothers slap little handprints on their ships before leaving Kamino

I remember this too but I can’t remember where I read it!
it's mentioned in legacy of the force: bloodlines! ^_^
I found a pic of the Mando! I forgot to share. His name is Ram Zerimar.

Hear (the) story of Boudica, Queen of the Iceni.
Boudica rule(d) (the) clans with her husband 'til his death. Her husband left wealth to their children, and with hope to protect their family, to the Roman Emperor. Pain follow(ed) his death with enemies to come from (the) east, outsiders from Rome. Outsiders came to Iceni, rotten & merciless, (to) gather (the) wealth. They stole from (the) Queen, stole from (the) clans. Outsiders destroyed homes, they burn(ed) fields, enslave (the) people. (The) clans fought, but (the) Queen & her daughters were captured, they (were) injured, they had scars/emotional damage. Because of those events, Boudica felt a desire for vengeance. The Queen spoke to her people:
Freedom is better than shackles, we know this. We lived both. (The) people of Rome hate us! They threaten, they rob, they kill! They take our land, our families! It stops! Today! I can't live under their rule. None can. Their deaths must come when their boots touch our soil. We wait(ed) to act. We were wrong! We take back our families now, our wealth, our lands.
War began with (the) Romans. (The) Iceni fought across fields and through cities. Homes burned. Roman blood spilled everywhere. (The) Queen & her clans were merciless. To far London they go to burn (the) city. Many Romans fell to sword, to knife, to fist. But Romans decieve. They hide on defended/high ground. They hide with spears. (The) Inceni arrive at (the) pass. Death comes from sky, like rain.
Lances (are) all around, blood (is) all around. (The) Iceni fall.
But the people don't forget Boudica, Queen of (the) Iceni, many centuries beyond (the) war. People made Boudica from metal (statue) in London. She (will be) remember(ed) forever.
Ni miit'gaana gehat'ika be Boudica - I write the story of Boudica
-=Changelog: Swapped in 'alori', the conjugated form of the verb 'alorir - to lead' from the noun 'an'gyce - rule/ law'.
There's no swapping around for verbs in Mando'a, kids.=-
Sounds pretty respectful to me, especially involving Bib Fortuna.
Resol'nare
Ok ad'ikase, I've mentioned it a lot in passing through out this blog, but today's the day we talk about the Resol'nare.
The Resol'nare, or Six Acts, are a guideline to the basics of being Mandalorian. If you can accept these tenets & follow what they call for you too can be a Mandalorian.
The Resol'nare goes thusly:
Bajur bal beskar'gam
Education & armor
Ara'nov, aliit
Defense, family
Mando'a bal Mand'alor
Language, our leader
An vencyan mhi
All sustain us
Seems simple, right? Well, mostly yes. But with veman'oya, some things are slightly different than they may seem at first glance. Let's take these points one at a time, shall we?
Bajur: Education
For Mandos, education isn't just reading, writing, and reloading a blaster. And though it's often attributed as "raising kids", bajur goes a bit beyond that. Bajur is about continuing to grown & learn, about expanding & perfecting your skillsets. It's about raising your own children, or the children of your aliit, sure. But it's also about imparting your skills & knowledge to others. This even constitutes as bajur. I'm offering up my meager knowledge & we're growing better together. Overall, it's about avoiding stagnation. Changing & learning to become a better version of yourself & helping others to do likewise.
As a friend of mine says, "self improvement's part of the Resol'nare, ya gotta do it!"
Beskar'gam: Armor
You all know what beskar'gam, Mandalorian armor, is & what it looks like. You may know some of the customs & components that make it up. Beskar'gam, literally iron skin, is important to Mandos in a number of ways. It's cultural connectivity; no matter your species, everyone knows a Mandalorian when they see one. It's protection; having a full suit that deflects blaster bolts, even lightsaber blades, that keeps out hostile enviroments is a game change for moving through the universe - especially in dangerous professions. It's modifiable, personal & potentially packed with helpful, sometimes lifesaving, modifications. Viewing things differing spectrums, be able to connect to any number of galactic networks, comms that never go beyond your squad, 360 views, weapons platorms, thermal & cooling protections...the list goes on. Beskar'gam is handy! And super stylish!!
But you can't really wander around in the real world all kitted out on a daily basis, now can you? Personally, I'd love a buy'ce on the regular as I'm told that my face can be very loud, lol, but alas that not the world we live in. So what can we do to fulfill this tenet? The impracticality of actual beskar'gam makes the idea of a symbolic alternative an attractive one. Symbols - jewelry, stickers, tattoos, key chains, etc. There are any number of things you can carry or wear for a declaration to the galaxy, or just for your own peace of mind, that you're a Mandalorian. Bes'karta or kyr'bes are popular choices, but present your Mando pride in whatever way speaks to you.
Ara'nov: Defense
In a warrior culture defense is a big deal. You never know when you might be beset upon by an aru'e & have to step up to protect your clan or yourself. Mando kids are taught combat & weapons early. Even Mando'ade that aren't soldiers or hunters learn these skills.
And in our own world, a number of people for a number of reasons seek out & practice these skills. But not everybody wants to & not everybody feasibly can. So where does that leave you? Well, ner burc'yase, may I present my alternative for following the ara'nov tenet - Kar'tayl bal paklalot. Knowledge & a sharp tongue.
I've been credibly informed that I -and this is a direct quote- "hit like Fluttershy talks". If you're unfamiliar, take half a minute, search up Fluttershy on YouTube & have yourself a good laugh. But, what I lack in menacing physique or martial prowess, I make up for in kartayl bal paklalot. I may not be able to throw a punch, but I can stand by my eldest nibling when they were having a big, scary conversation about being queer to a, let's say less than understanding, parent. I don't know how to shoot a Verpine, but I can shoot my mouth off to anyone that comes for one of mine. And I may not be able to kaliki some guy, but I can go full head on a swivel next to my bestie to keep chakaare off her when she was terrified going out during the first few months post transition.
Defense, of your family, yourself, of just other people in the world doesn't have to mean only fists & weapons. Your mind, your support, your presence, your words can all protect people too.
Aliit: Clan
Clans are a major factor in Mando culture. Your family, born or chosen, are your people. They help make you who you are, as well as protect & provide for you.
I wouldn't usually quote Bo-Katan, but it fits the moment:
"Mandalorians are stronger together"
Mandalorians sometimes live in generational households. They welcome new members from birth, marriage, or adoption equally. Communal contributions to the clan are common through provision, defense or labor. It is part of what it means to be family, everyone helps out, everyone works for the good of the clan.
You may not all be best friends, but when the creds are down, your aliit will -generally- be there for you. It's like real life siblings - "they may be a jerk, but they're OUR jerk!" *thus ensues the fight from some aruetii sassing your vod*
Mando'a: Language
Here's the part that got me in the door, lol. Learning, speaking, and reading Mando'a is another aspect of being Mandalorian. It's another piece of cultural connectivity like I mentioned back in the beskar'gam section. Passing on the culture of Mandos is important to the Mando'ade. it's a piece of themselves that they can carry & pass down no matter where life & the galaxy takes them. The language let new people come in to the culture & be able to communicate when, in Crusader times, people poured in. As converts, as traders, & as conquests Mando'a let a myriad of beings from a myriad of backgrounds become one people.
While there is written Mando'a, you'll find it on decorations or signage, on artifacts or screens, it's a largely spoken language. Mando'a has dialects depending on the origins of the speaker. Some are easier to parse from standard(ish) Mando'a than others.
Also, it's just fun to talk past the aruetiise who don't know -and probably couldn't be bothered to learn- our language.
I want to just jabber about all the things I love about Mando'a, but that would make this a MUCH longer post. I'll just say that I love it so much & if you aren't here cuz you're already trying to learn it, please try! Mando'a beautiful & amazing & always surprising &...Ok, yeah I hear it. I'll shut up now, lol.
Mand'alor: The Leader of the Mandalorians
This tenet gets tricky, as Mando'ade don't handle planetary or cultural governance the way a lot of aruetii worlds do. Other worlds have long lines of the same family ruling over their populace, or strings of people fighting & grasping & scheming for power.
Mandos just...don't. They'll put up a person for Mand'alor when they need one, but otherwise they get by just fine on their own.
Or, as Boba Fett once put it:
"You don't lead Mandalorians. You just make sensible suggestions that you know they'll want to follow."
Mandalorians just don't always need a leader. And there isn't always a huge push to take the job when they do need one. And when whatever calamity passes, a Mand'alor won't usually cling to power. There's no Mand'alor's castle, no trappings or treasury really. No Mand'alor's Court, no real expectation of deference from the people. It's a bit of an important, but not very flashy, temp job. There are frequent, long stretches where -to the bafflement of aruetiise everywhere- there just isn't a Mand'alor. Mandalorians don't always need one.
"But," I hear you saying, "what about Satine? She ruled Mandalore and she had a throne & a Court and all that stuff!" Yes, yes she did. But that's something of a separate, specific issue. She was Duchess Satine, Mandalorian royalty. She was a bit more 'rule over my subjects' than your, shall we say, classic Mand'alor. Ultimately, it comes down to this: I'm more of a Legends nerd & Mandalorian royalty ruling over everybody seems nu'mandokarla to me. If you feel otherwise, I can respect that, but it's my blog so go talk about it on yours. That goes for Bo-Katan too. Jedi appointed Regent, my shebs.
In times of war or hardship, a -generally- sensible individual will rise to the post of Mand'alor with the backing of the Mando'ade. When they, for there have been Mand'alore of different genders & species over the eons, rally the people to a cause, Mandos answer. Sometimes willingly, sometimes reluctantly, but when the Mand'alor calls, Mando'ade answer their call.
Cool, so...what's the real world relevancy on this one then? There really isn't any. Not a lot of Mando'ade in the world, if something that happens that is so bad that we might need a real world Mand'alor we probably have bigger problems.
So there ya have it, anade, that's the Resol'nare. Six guidelines to living life as Mandalorian. I hope you enjoyed today's presentation. Ret'urcye mhi.
Resol'nare - The Six Acts. The minimum required components for living as a Mandalorian. Comes from the word resol - six, and the verb narir - to do or to act
Ad'ikase - kids
Bajur - education
beskar'gam - armor
Ara'nov - defense
Aliit - clan
Mando'a - Mandalorian language
Mand'alor - leader of the Mandalorians
veman'oya - real life
bes'karta - the iron heart, the 6 pointed symbol (much like the Resol'nare itself) found on most armor. Also called kar'ta beskar or chest diamond
kyr'bes - the Mythosaur skull
Aru'e - enemy. Aru'ese is the plural
Ner burc'yase - my friends
Kar'tayl bal paklalot - knowledge & a sharp tongue
Kaliki - conjugated form of kalikir, to stab with a narrow blade - to skewer
Chakaare - literally grave robbers, thieves crooks, etc. Ya know...dirtbags. Adjetive form is chakaaryc
Aruetii - outsider, foreigner, non-Mandalorian. Plural is aruetiise
Vod - sibling, close friend, sometimes cousin. Plural is vode
Aliike - sigils
Nu’mandokarla - not in keeping with Mandalorian virtues, not showing “the right stuff”
Shebs - backside
ret'urcye mhi - maybe we'll meet again
mandos + beskar’gam + specialized support systems
injury rate in mandos is extremely high (naturally) and their understanding of injury, recovery, and trauma is excellent. so naturally, they’d adapt their armor to help them with lasting medical problems…..
mandalorians who have lost an eye having an hud setup that gives them video feed from their blind side in a small popup. its not as good as having two eyes, but no one can sneak up on you from that side. adapted hud control commands, since traditional setups rely on blinking. additional reliance on voice recognition and spoken commands. overlay grids and interactive ai to help with depth perception
mandos with tinnitus from ear damage having constant background noise filters to help distract from the ringing
vitals monitors such as constant heart activity monitoring, blood glucose levels, etc. if you go critical, the system will alert the closest select number of people from a list that you give the program to come help you.
specially designed combat-level prosthetics built into armor. you have your casual every-day wear leg, and your Armor Leg. it’s got a rocket launcher.
support ai and hud grids/horizon lines etc for vertigo, balance problems, etc
sure, you can build a hearing aid into your audio system, but why not also have live subtitles?
i fully believe sign language is a common skill for mandos (and not just for combat) but you could also have a text-to-voice feature that lets you write out what you want to say and have a computer say it for you
hell what do i have to do to get a fic about a mandalorian who practically has a support droid living in their armor. they got sick of having 18 different single-function ais and just got one entire robotic personality programmed in. (what if darth vader’s support suit is actually a droid that he wears. imagine the possibilities.)
YES. I will steal this.
It’ll still be a while until I get to my Mandos, but seeing as they’re like a Mand’alor’s medical corps in waiting, I’ve always seen them as having a lot of medical adaptations to armor, primarily for themselves, that they then roll out to other Mandalorians who seek their medical services.
Had an idea for a cybernetic eye with connections for additional processing power so the HUD is right in the optical nerve with connection for Brain Machine Interface. The character using it has an astromech who’s much closer companion then usually portrayed, with the cybereye and BMI, the R2 unit can communicate directly with their organic companion without most anyone being the wiser.
I long for an era where i could feasibly upgrade a prosthetic to something Mando made! Also, configuring my HUD so I didn't need glasses, oya! That's the dream.
