Your love for him was the messiest, silliest, most predictable thing in the universe. And it always made me smile.

GOOD OMENS | 2019 - 2026
there is something in the way azazel (and his minions) are always overestimating or over-imitating john's care for his children. famously, of course, is "He wouldn’t be proud of me, he’d tear me a new one. You’re not my Dad" (1.22). but there's also meg setting a trap for john in 1.16 and being sure he'll come for them and dean being sure he won't. and there's azazel possessing samuel in 4.03 and immediately being kinder to dean than samuel has that entire episode: "Take the compliment, son. I'm saying that I was wrong about you." and then there's this.
mary waking, alone in bed, in the middle of the night when she hears her youngest son crying on the monitor. she walks to his nursery door where she sees what she assumes is her husband checking on the restless sam. and it's only once she walks downstairs, once sees her actual husband passed out in a recliner with the TV playing a war movie that she realizes that the figure she took to be a father lovingly caring for his son is not her john
what if the thing you've been hoping for, wishing would happen, wanting to change in your family dynamic suddenly seemed like it HAD.
what if your husband, who just a few months before had walked out of the house on you and your two kids, who, even after he came home, would leave you to sleep alone (once again?), seemed to be checking on your baby. imagine the relief. the finally.
and this. what if your father suddenly told you everything you'd been wanting to hear. that he was proud of you, that he respected the effort you put in to keep your family together, that he wasn't angry with you.
look at dean's tentative tiny smile and the quiet 'thanks' when he thought his dad was finally saying everything he'd ever wanted to hear
no wonder it nearly works.

john can never be satisfied with either of his sons because what he wants is completely different from what he needs. sam is the son that john wants, in theory: independent, stubborn, strong, matching his energy. but he will always be angry at sam because sam being this way prevents him from doing what john needs him to do, which is being a hunter who never questions an order, so john keeps yelling at him. and dean is the son that john needs: filling the role of wife for him and of mother for sam, taking care of the family, obeying any order without questioning it, not talking back, letting himself be used as bait and be sexualized or objectified if that’s what the hunt demands, eager to please john. but john can never respect dean because he sees dean’s obedience and caregiving as degrading behavior lacking masculinity, so he keeps humiliating him
