As many as 10,000 slaves followed a clandestine Southern Underground Railroad to Mexico. —To date, many Black Mexicans from the Texas area retrace a portion of the same route their African American ancestors followed in 1850 when they escaped slavery. —Descendants of slaves who escaped across the southern border observe Texas’s emancipation holiday with their own unique traditions in the village of Nacimiento. —Slave hunters would patrol the southern border for escapees, led by the Texas Rangers but the Mexican army would be there waiting for them (the slave hunters) to turn them away.

Inspired by my walking past a home built in 1754 in my new neighborhood, which isn't even the oldest building in the city. As someone born and raised in the Western US (where we do have some very old buildings, contrary to popular belief, just not in the middle of most cities), it made me curious!

When was the oldest extant building you can reasonably walk to from your home built?

20th century

#all 20th century here on the east side #i think the oldest building is on the rcmp grounds #but that's all the way on the northwest side #everything within walking distance was built from the 1970s and newer #i'll add that i don't think it's entirely the city's fault #it's built on what used to be an ancient sea bed #and has some of the most extreme temps on the planet #there isn't a single foundation that seems to survive it unscathed

The most mind-blowing moment, not only for De La Mata but the scientists too, came when they managed to actually record the sounds that she heard in her ears – which now appear as ‘Left Ear’ and ‘Right Ear’ which begin sides A and B on the album – and in doing so opened up questions about the nature of tinnitus itself. “The NHS definition is that it’s a phantom sound that your brain is creating, that it isn’t something ‘real’, so you should try to ignore it.” By having De La Mata place her ear into an anechoic chamber, with an ultra-sensitive microphone perched in her ear canal, they were able to provide significant evidence to the contrary. “After the first recording of it, it was ‘There’s no way, this isn’t possible.’” They tried again with her breath held, and again with her tensing her ears, and again with other members of staff, but each time it became apparent that yes, the noises De La Mata hears are seemingly something physical.

What the actual fuck is going on in Maine?

Maine has a small population. This is probably more common there than people realize. Not defending it (this is what happens when you have long-term ethnic homogeneity, and it's still weird to marry your first cousin's kid) but it also doesn't carry the risk of genetic problems associated with incest you'd see in first cousin marriages.

#people don't quite understand what second cousins means #if you are from a small population in a rural area this happens often #these people are not first cousins once removed #as someone who's mom was french canadian #this isn't unheard of #my mom was the first in her family who married someone with out a french last name #i didn't marry someone with a french last name nor from the small community my mom hails from #i still did genetic testing to make sure i didn't carry tay sachs or leber disease just to be on the safe side #“fille du roy” is a thing #anyhow not scandalous for second cousins and greater to be married #you aren't *that* close genetically for it to be an issue #though for certain small populations with known genetic issues it's always good to know beforehand
