@proshiphomosuck
we made it to 2022!!!!!!!!
r u alive
Yeah, sorry for the radio silence. I took a break due to being busy with IRL studies, and I think I'm still going to be on something of a break, since reading about too much discourse at once kinda tired me out. I dunno, honestly. Also, I wound up spending way more time than I'd expected to on Tumblr, but that's a whole nother can of worms.
Enough of that, though. My apologies for replying to this ask incredibly late, and sorry if anyone was concerned.
the way repression works
Iâve seen this before. Iâve seen this all before.Â
Letâs go back to my time in an elite boarding school in Britain. I went there as an exchange student, after my senior year of high school. I was in the Upper Sixth form, and the girls in lower forms wore uniforms, but L6 and U6 didnât have uniforms. We were expected, instead, to adhere to a dress code.
It said âprofessional attireâ, and said ânothing too casualâ, and was very clearly open to interpretation. When in doubt, they said, go to oneâs house warden, and present yourself, and she would decide whether your outfit was suitable.
Thatâs all well and good if youâre wealthy, but I was not particularly wealthy, and had come with a very small baggage allowance. I bought myself a pair of trousers, which were quite expensive and that I thought looked quite smart, only to find that the house warden considered them unsuitable. I could not return them, and was stuck with a pair of trousers I could not wear, and no funds or opportunity to replace them.
I loaned them to a friend, who was thinner than I was. (I was and am quite fat.) On her, they were looser. On her, they passed muster; she could wear them to classes. She even asked specifically, and the house warden approved them.
The problem was not the trousers. The problem was my body. But the problem was mine, either way. I saw similar issues with the very few non-white girls at the school; they were held to much higher standards of dress than the white girls. The fat girls, the brown girls, the gender non-conforming girls, all of us together had to spend extra time and money on our appearances not to get caught up in the subjective enforcement of the dress code that got us harassed by the various authority figures. I spent most of that year in an ugly blazer and a midcalf skirt I hated but that teachers didnât look at. (And, oh yes, when I started having an affair with another female student, the scrutiny intensified, and I was almost expelled. Fat, foreign, and queer wasnât a good combo for getting left alone.)
Before you think, this old granny is ranting, understand that I am talking about censorship. This is how censorship works. It suppresses deviance. And it may seem straightforward what deviance is, but anytime itâs subjective, it is not straightforward. And the very idea that all content has to pass through some filter before it is presented, thatâs censorship. That everything must be subject to controlling decisions? thatâs censorship.
âI know it when I see it,â the censor says. And then where does he look? He looks at the outspoken. He looks at the nonconforming. He looks at the âtroublemakersâ. He looks at the outliers. He looks at the ones that donât look like him, and donât talk like him, and donât think like him.
The ones who are like him, he lets slide. âThey donât mean it like that,â he says. âThey mean well.â
No graphic depictions, it says. Nothing hard. Nothing too dirty. What does that mean? What does it ever mean?
It means, nothing I donât like. It means itâs not up to you. It means Only things I think acceptable. It means accept control. It means conform and be nice to us, and weâll let you do what you want, provided you stay Acceptable.
It means I donât participate in any exchanges or events with subjective content limits. It means if itâs not for everybody itâs not for me.
It means, yeah, probably I could be acceptable, probably my stuff wouldnât trip their subjective filters because I have Acceptable tastes, but I know what itâs like to be marginalized and Iâm not going to trade on my passability to leave my marginalized compatriots in the cold.
Shit I'm tired of hearing about middle-aged women in fandom, and why they matter:
"You're too old for fandom!" Wait till you hear about who built fandom. And it matters bc the things that women build are always taken away when they hit their expiration date. And we're expected to just accept that we can't keep anything of ourselves. Bc women are nurturing and selfless. Any objection is proof of inadequacy as a woman and, therefore, is justification for anything from rudeness to threats. That martyr narrative just keeps popping up everywhere.
"Go raise your kids!" So much unfettered misogyny there. It matters bc women are not vending machines for babies, and parents are not child-raising androids. It removes both autonomy as a woman and humanity as an adult. It screams that you've absorbed intersectional bigotry and haven't challenged it. [Bonus points if you just rb'd a post on reproductive autonomy or rejecting gender roles.]
"Pretty sus that you're in a sexual fandom/make art of romance or smut." Yep, bc sex and relationships are for kids. It matters bc it plays off the stereotype that women lose their sex drives when they grow up (and, ideally, get married and have kids). After 25 or so, sex is solely performative, to please a partner. So of course it's creepy for a woman to be actually sexual or sensual. [Bonus points if you get up in arms over age discrepancies in Hollywood with zero self-awareness.]
"Quit perving on teens!" Love this one, bc I've never seen it used in a situation where someone was actually approaching a teen. That matters bc it requires the assumption that women who don't become sexless are inherently predatory. Just existing while having a libido or enjoying adult content is dangerous. That's why we're cougars! We're wild animals who attack ppl with our sexuality and are somehow a very serious threat and also a hilarious thing to be exploited.
"What do you know about [fandom/history/current events]?!" Also intersectional. It matters bc it means that middle-aged women are uniquely insulated, exaggerating ageist stereotypes. While a 45-yr-old man is expected to be aware of the past and present, a 26-yr-old woman is already supposed to be ass-deep in kids and work. A woman is too busy in her own tiny world, unaware of anything else. Great way to silence and discredit with no effort!
"What would your spouse/mom/boss/clergy think???" I'm sure this is said to ppl who aren't middle-aged women too, but it has an interesting connotation here. It matters bc it appeals to an assumed sense of humility and chastity, and dependence on others for survival. When it comes to controlling women over time, shame is a bedfellow of violence. The threat of being exposed as a "bad woman" carries so much historical weight. (One of the largest reclaimed slurs in fandom had the intent of shaming women for being "rotten" and unsuitable for marriage.) And, again, it's intersectional, as young women have leeway while older women have staunch social obligations that trump all else. And if a woman doesn't accept that, then the group is justified in sabotaging the relationships that, presumably, keep her fed, housed and safe.
"I'm so tired of 'fandom moms'!!!" This one usually comes with a "go raise your kids" or "stop perving on teens," for good measure. It matters bc it rebrands the same bigoted takes to make them more palatable. It's not about the person, it's about the role. So it can't be misogyny or ageism. Except any middle-aged woman with fandom experience is automatically a fandom mom, whether she likes it or not. Non-consensual no-wins are stale, but some of you just won't let them die.
If you don't buy into the stereotypes and bullshit ideas, none of that makes any sense. So when it comes out of your mouths, I know what you're really saying. It literally doesn't matter if you aren't consciously thinking, "Middle-aged women should earn their enjoyment of anything by suffering, and if they aren't self-flagellating enough, I'll help them feel bad." When you say, "Adult women in fandom are cringe af; if you're grown and you like this, you should get help," I hear it. And so do the other kids listening.
Idk what's in your Respect Women Juice cup, but it's mislabeled.

Stridercest mood board for the complicated relationship that every splinter of self brings between two people who learn to stop idolizing each other. Requested by: Mod Kero
Itâs so fucking infuriatingly frustrating that so many of ao3âČs userbase is so adamant that ao3 is nonprofit even though itâs owned by a corporation so that shit is a fucking lie in of itself, like. They invest in stocks and constantly people try and push this stupid as fuck idea that thereâs no ads!! :)) itâs free!! when itâs been in beta for literal fucking years with one of the worst filtration and blocking systems Iâve seen to date and rampant disgusting nsfw thatâs unregulated and crops up to previews for themes anyways so why do we constantly have to have mile long posts defending such a fundamentally bad website from itâs core instead of actually thinking critically for once I fucking hate all of you.
Normally I ignore this stuff, but the insinuation that AO3 is secretly some manipulative scheme to enrich people is just blatantly false.
so many of ao3âČs userbase is so adamant that ao3 is nonprofitÂ
Yeah because it is. Look up the Organization for Transformative Works in the IRS database of tax exempt organizations, or GuideStarâs non-profit report listing. EINÂ 38-3765024, BRIDGE Number 5584273916.
Letâs check out their Form 990 and see how much they paid their staffers:
And itâs a whooping $0.00.
They invest in stocks
Oh heaven forbid. Itâs pretty standard for any moderately-sized nonprofit to make conservative investments, so that their reserves do more than simply accrue interest in a bank account. Nobody is taking a vacation to Comoros on that money.
âOnce nonprofits get larger, however, some are able to start thinking for the future. Taking money and putting it toward longer-term goals like capital spending or a permanent endowment requires prudent investment. In order to take initial seed money and grow it into a substantial nest egg for use toward those longer-term charitable purposes, nonprofits are allowed to invest in stocks, bonds, funds, and other typical investments.â
https://www.fool.com/knowledge-center/can-a-nonprofit-organization-invest-in-stock.aspx
itâs owned by a corporation
Yes, AO3 is part of the Organization for Transformative Works, which is indeed incorporated. Again, pretty standard for a charity. Letâs review the OTWâs Certificate of Incorporation:
itâs been in beta for literal fucking years
Finally⊠who cares? Gmail was in beta for five years, and that was with all the resources of Google behind it and 100 million people already using it.
âthe label is just a way for Google to signal users that theyâre still tweaking the e-mail service and adding new featuresâ
Same thing for AO3. The reason AO3 is in beta is because it doesnât have a finalized codebase and itâs too unstable to make an API out of. They could put out a post tomorrow saying âweâre out of betaâ and nobody would bat an eye. The website isnât perfect, but itâs more than functional. And yes, there are a lot of features that canât be added without overtaxing the existing hardware resources, so why not try a GreasyFork userscript?
tl;dr - I have to write this every year, but AO3 is still not a scam. It is a non-profit. None of the staffers even get paid. It exists solely for a charitable purpose, a purpose which has been acknowledged and validated by the Internal Revenue Service.
Iâm sorry but OPâs âone of the worst filtration and blocking systemsâ has me in stitches as if the tagging system on Ao3 wasnât the envy of libraries, school and universities WORLD-WIDE just because OP has to select the tags to exclude THEMSELF oh no, the horror
Also, imagine complaining about the filtering and tagging and blocking system being awful⊠While on Tumblr.
but ok, the AO3 blocking system I would argue is bad. Because they donât currently have one. Now, I understand why they donât, but in more fairness than people like OP deserve, this means their blocking system is, indeed, pretty subpar. Due to not existing.
Their filtering system, meanwhile, is literally, LITERALLY the envy of academic archives/databases worldwide, because it is the best there is for what it does. And if you regularly search fics for a certain fandom and you donât want to see certain tags, you can literally filter those tags out and then BOOKMARK THE SEARCH RESULTS, which can THEN be further tweaked to any given dayâs particular search parameters.
Also maybe itâs just my personal life/upbringing/whatever, but I 100% knew that nonprofits/charities could be incorporated and that the ones with extra funds would invest in stocks way back in the FUCKING 90S, so everyone else needs to get their shit together and do a quick goddamn GOOGLE SEARCH at least, before they start slinging accusations at AO3 and the OTW.
putting âlive laugh loveâ and âhomeâ signs in my MURDER MAZE DUNGEON to make my MURDER MAZE VICTIMS feel more at ease
system of a clown. you ever think of that
last night i had a dream there was like a homestuck sitcom and all i remember is karkat talking to the camera looking worried saying âgamzee hasnt eaten anything but Easy Cheese and weed brownies for the past three daysâ then it cut to a smug-looking gamzee who said âhe thinks its been three days, its actually been three weeksâ then he sprayed some Easy Cheese into his mouth

I am really tired yall.
Lemme just preface this with saying that I am a writer. I have been writing for most of my life. I have taken actual classes about writing and about what fiction can offer you, me, and people as a whole. I have won an award for something that I wrote. I know and love fiction, be it in written form, graphic novels, or film. It is all so good and complex and itâs something I am passionate about. That said, letâs get into this.
A good majority of the discourse that goes on in most of the fandoms Iâm in stem from the idea that violence and forbidden sexual acts in fiction will encourage those actions in reality. It is important to know, firstly, that the only time this happens is when a person is immature enough or not mentally healthy enough to distinguish reality from fiction. Growing up, my parents would often stop horror movies (back when I first started watching them) to ask me questions. To be fair, they were pretty shitty people, but in this one aspect, they were so good about making sure I knew this difference. âYou know this is just a movie, right? None of the stuff on the tv is real.â Theyâd assure before continuing the film.
Itâs not real.
Now, half of the stuff I read or watched back then was nowhere near pushing boundaries or making me think critically about society or whatever. However, I knew that what I watched wasnât real. It was images on a screen. If I donât like what Iâm seeing, I can walk away. It doesnât have to affect me, personally, unless I let it.
Now, lets circle back. School. College. I took a writing class that used this book:
Granted, it was a screenwriting class and most of the chapters were about various script formats, but the beginning chapters focused on why we write and why we make the stories we do.
It had a section in it describing how human needs and desires are met through fiction. It detailed those needs in a list. This list:
Please draw your attention to the ones on the list that say that fictions helps people to:
Be purged of unpleasant emotions
To have vicarious but controlled emotional experiences
To confront, in a controlled situation, the horrible and terrible
To explore taboo subjects without guilt
Just because you personal donât need various forms of âtabooâ media, doesnât mean that others donât. Media, in all of its forms, is a way for people to explore things safely. Itâs an outlet that doesnât harm anyone and it offers the creator and viewer/reader a safe way of exploring the complexities of situations (or in some cases relationships) that these people do not want to be involved in irl. Because we can distinguish reality from fiction. Because none of us are going out killing people or getting into abusive relationships or fucking our sibling.
While being critical of the media we consume is important and it is vital to dissect the whys of the media being created, there is a line between creating open discussion about these taboos, about the society and personal experiences that makes one need these outlets, and verbally abusing and harassing strangers.
If you want to create a dialogue about media or a ship you donât agree with, fine. Talk about it. Dissect it. Really dig deep into the human condition and the psychology behind these outlets, but donât shame people for them to the point of telling them to kill themselves or telling them they are human garbage or what the fuck ever.
Fiction isnât always meant to be picturesque. Itâs not always going to be SFW. If that isnât your cup of tea, then great. Stop going into the tags of things that make you feel unhealthy. You do you. Keep yourself safe. Stop continuously exposing yourself to content that you canât swallow. To keep getting involved, to keep harassing people, to keep abusing strangers shows that you donât give a damn about the content. You need an excuse to bully someone else and indulge in holier-than-thou circle jerks with other people who also have no sense of what fiction is for.
im so fucking awesome everyone loves me
To Whom It May Concern
It has come to my attention that some of you have been enjoying media that the OAF (Organization Against Fun) has deemed Problematicâą.
This is unacceptable.
The frankly appalling behavior in question is exemplified by, but not limited to, engaging with themes not suitable for five year olds, speaking about or writing complex characters without constantly emphasizing how evil they are, and creating fanworks that do not appeal to me personally without asking for my permission or begging for my forgiveness.
Since you people do not possess my superior intellect, you have thus misinterpreted the phrase âthinking criticallyâ to mean âanalyzing and interpreting a workâ instead of the correct definition ânitpicking perceived flawsâ. Fear not, you will be re-educated.
Aditionally, certain individuals, who shall remain unnamed, have displayed shocking amounts of empathy towards morally grey characters, or worse, developed a fondness for villainous characters who were written to be charming and dramatic. When confronted with my lecture about how villains are evil, these individuals responded with âand thatâs very sexy of them.â
The OAF cannot let this stand.
Instead of shipping Wokeâą ships with a far less interesting dynamic, there have been various attempts to normalize, romanticize, fetishize, realize and caramelize illegal ships, which should be punishable by death as it is tantamount to a war crime.
Sadly, the AO3 (Archive of Our Own) responded to my reasonable demands for censorship by telling me to âfuck off or learn to use the tagging system for its intended purpose.â
I must ask all who are currently having fun in their fandoms to cease and desist.
Wonât somebody think of the children.
ice hell ftw
I just.
You donât need a reason to not like a ship. You donât need a reason not to ship a ship, canon or otherwise. You donât have to prove itâs âproblematicâ or âabusiveâ or any of that shit.
Youâre allowed to just not like it. You can literally just say âeh, I donât like it, itâs just not my thingâ and thatâs valid. You donât have to explain it or excuse it. Just say you donât like it and move the fuck on, for fuckâs sake.
I am BEGGING yâall.
