I hate that post going round that’s like “haha you wouldn’t tell a disabled guy he’s using his crutch as a crutch” ecause that very thing literally happens to people that use mobility aids.

I can’t count how many time people (including physiotherapists who’re supposed to be understanding and help me) have said “you need to stop relying on your crutches” and the like.

I literally had a physiotherapist remove my crutches from under me without my consent and tell me to walk.

And it’s not even a rare thing.

Wheelchair users get told they need to stop relying on their wheelchairs, cane users get told they shouldn’t rely on their canes etc.

I’m just so bored with the depression-centric ableism rhetoric, erasing the ableism people with physical and visable disabilities experience

Yeeeeeaahh… A LOT of her followers are narcos and sicarios (cartel members and hitmen) and in many communities it’s wise to watch out when someone seems to be very devoted to Santa Muerte. Like, not to demonize her cult because she’s also worshipped by the poor and outcast in general but narcos make up a biiiig part of her following and to present her as just this “cool magical skeleton lady” is misguided at best.

Like not to be a buzzkill or anything just please please please please don’t make Santa Muerte into the next cool thing for edgy/quirky gringos just cause skeletons are awesome and she’s LGBT inclusive. It’d be EXTREMELY insensitive and she’s a rough deity.

The rise of her cult is a symptom of a country that has been in sorta-official war against its own people for years as a result of economic desolation through predatory policy and blatant disregard for the life of the poor and minorities. I mean, she’s literally death personified in a country where death is for many an outright business, and not in the abstracted ‘i sell weapons’ or ‘we sacrifice people indirectly through policy’ kinda way but in the very literal ‘kidnappings and executions are a surefire way to get out of poverty’ and ‘disembodied heads and mutilated limbs in public places are very effective messages for your enemies’ kinda way. Also it should be noted that the US has a large share of the responsibility for this situation. So yeah, please don’t idealize Santa Muerte.

I didn’t want to reblog the original because I felt a type of way about the information there. Glad people weighed in. This one is better. Seeing gringos soften deities like Aztec gods, La Santa, or even Hindu gods like Kali has always rubbed me the wrong way.

When I was sixteen, my family visited Hawaii, and I had a cute new swimsuit. I was a pretty busty teen, with the vocabulary of an AP English student, and while I was out swimming, a couple of college guys started flirting with me. Nothing gross, just pleasantly casual hey-you-look-great-how-are-you-enjoying-the-beach stuff.

After a minute or two of this, one of them asked if I was there with friends, and I said no, I was with my family. “Wow, you still travel with your family?” one exclaimed. “That’s cool…”

“Well, I am sixteen,” sez me.

Reader, they blanched. They flustered, they apologized, they assured me that they’d thought I was also in college, they wished me a good vacation and they bounced. All within about a minute of realizing they’d been chatting up a minor.

I was mildly mortified at the time, but now? I look back and think, Ah, what good men. What good young men.
