SIGYN

In Norse mythology, Sigyn stands as a profound symbol of unwavering loyalty, resilience, and quiet strength. Known as the goddess of victory and loyalty, she is the devoted wife of Loki and the mother of Vali* and Narvi. Far from the passive figure depicted in later retellings, Sigyn is a powerful and enduring presence within the Norse pantheon, often called “Loki’s Treasure” or “The Delight of Loki’s Hall” by modern pagans.

Sigyn is Loki’s most steadfast supporter, standing by him when all others have turned away. This loyalty is most evident during Loki’s brutal punishment for his role in Baldr’s death. After Odin turned Vali into a wolf, the poor boy lost his mind and slaughtered his brother Narvi. Sigyn, though heartbroken, did not retreat in grief. Instead, she rose in defiance.

While Loki was chained beneath the earth, tortured by venom dripping from a serpent’s fangs, Sigyn shielded her husband as best she could, holding a bowl to catch the poison. Unfortunately, she had to leave from time to time to empty bowl, and the poison burned Loki’s flesh, causing him to convulse in agony. His screams are believed to cause earthquakes.

Modern pagans associate her with the fox, an animal symbolizing cunning and adaptability, mirroring her own quiet yet fierce nature.

Day Nine: How would you explain what magic is to someone who doesn't believe in it?

Honestly, I don't really know. I suppose if they asked in good faith, I could tell them how I see magic as a universal current that lives in and around everything, and that it's an energy we can tap into to attempt to understand and shape our reality. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't bother. I'm not in the habit of explaining myself to people who are determined to misunderstand me.

Day Eight: Do you view magic as natural or supernatural? Or do you see no real distinction between the two?

Merriam-Webster's dictionary defines "supernatural" as the following:

1. Of or relating to an order of existence beyond the visible, observable universe. Especially: of or relating to God or a god, demigod, spirit, or devil

2a. Departing from what is usual or normal especially so as to appear to transcend the laws of nature.

2b. Attributed to an invisible agent (such as a ghost or spirit)

What I take from this is that "natural" and "supernatural" are two sides of the same coin, with natural being those things that we can observe and attempt to explain, while supernatural are the things that we can't. I don't see the forces of science and magic as being diametrically opposed. Both are vehicles by which we interact with and attempt to understand or influence the world, the universe, and ourselves.
