For those of you who don’t know about Cherenkov radiation, I’m going to tell you because it’s super cool

Cherenkov radiation is created by particles that are moving faster than light. Faster than light. This can only happen because the medium they are traveling through slows down the speed of light enough that other particles (like electrons) can move faster than the light

It works in much the same way as a sonic boom, except with light instead of sound

But I’m pretty sure this is happening where the reaction takes place, so it’s not the same thing and is probably much more radioactive. Water is still pretty good at blocking radiation (which that Tom Scott filed a video standing directly above one of these glowing blue pools) but it’s probably not the best idea to swim in them just to be safe
