True. Even some concerts are recorded whether for TV or YouTube, or sometimes even radio. That doesn’t make actually going to concerts any less valuable and it certainly doesn’t stop people from going. People go to live performances for the experience, not the art. That’s why even if you have heard every single song a band has ever played, you will still go to see them live. Because you are not there to hear new music, you’re there to experience the music again with lots of people in a fun, new, experience. I have never been to a musical or play live, but I have listened to and even watched recordings of some. Despite that, I would still like to see them live someday, because live performance is more than just the music or play it shows, it’s an experience that you can not get otherwise. Frankly, I probably wouldn’t want to see any show that I haven’t already seen at home, because I’m not going to go to a theatre and risk not liking the show I see. Theatres are expensive and usually only in bug cities. I have only ever lived in small towns and have rarely been in a situation where I could’ve gone to a theatre. When I have been in those situations, the trip and tickets have always been too expensive to justify. Especially since would’ve never seen the show we would’ve watched and had no idea if I would actually enjoy it or not.
Art, all art, including musicals and plays. Can change people’s lives. Many pieces are made as a way to bring light to something. A problem, an injustice, a story, and many other things. Art can show these and bring attention to them, but only if people see that art. I will never know if going to a theatre any number of those times would have changed me in some way or not. Idk if seeing a musical could have helped me or saved me from something that I went through. I will never know, not because I did not want to go, but because of how the world is, I couldn’t. Because theatres are so inaccessible, I likely will never get to see any of those shows. And because of how inaccessible theatres are, many shows will likely never be appreciated as they should’ve been, will likely never reach the audience they were meant too, and their creators will likely never get paid or acknowledged enough for their work. The world is already so inaccessible to young people, poc, queer people, disabled people, poor people, and anyone else part of a minority and discriminated against. How can cutting all these people off from the art of theatre do anything but make life crueler for all? Leaving spaces for only the rich, white and powerful to reach, only perpetuates the cycle of ignorance. In order to understand, to have proper knowledge, that is not based on only one experience, that is not limited. You must converse with others. People who have different knowledge than you, who have a different experience. Knowledge based on only one thing is weak, to combine knowledge is to strength it, on both sides. One will always lack in something, but multiple will fill those gaps, strengthening and securing collective knowledge. To keep spaces where only one type of experience can manifest, where no other experiences can be and neither are able to bounce off of each other. You widen the cracks in both sides knowledge, understanding and capabilities. You make each side weaker and weaker because you refuse to let them work together.
