"Gatekeeping" political discourse by suggesting that you should be familiar with the theoretical work that's already been done is a lot like "gatekeeping" the exit of an in-flight airplane by suggesting that you might want to wear a parachute.
I feel like using the term gatekeeping for political discourse is pretty silly.
If I want to write a fanfic about a pretty boy Mandalorian who takes off his helmet to reveal his locks of auburn hair, the worst that's going to happen is I might annoy a few fans.
If I want to write a serious political essay about how we should treat people who need help to get by, I might cause some serious actual harm.
If you want to play with a water gun, have fun. If you want to play with a real gun, I need you to prove that you know how to safely use a firearm.
Yes! And this is why applying fandom logic to politics is dangerous!
