POV: two bisexuals give you relationship advice
CAPTAIN JANEWAY JUST SAID RPF IS FINE???
I'm crying she basically just said
Star Trek has always had phenomenal makeup but my word, look at the detail here. The seam, the little wires barely visible, the glint of metal, the fact that Brent's actual skin looks like it's the fake part, it's just insane. And not even a drop of CGI used.
b’elanna internalized racism episodes are frustrating because they’ll be so good then bam tom shows up to be like “woah my sexy klingon mamacita, how about we work out those big feelings with some bat’leth 😝”
I love the “captain’s log” mechanism in Star Trek as a method for time skips and exposition.
I am, however, devastated that we never got an episode where any captain’s voiceover is strained and slow. very precise about the events they’re describing. While the screen itself is showing the most batshit insane events and making it clear that the captain is trying VERY HARD to keep everyone involved out of a court martial.
"chekhov's gun" my ass. he used a phaser.
while it's entirely possible Torias Dax would have made the same decision without being joined, there is something unsettling about how he died because he took an unreasonable risk (to pilot an unfinished ship), and the fact that the one thing Dax seems to do for all its host is making them more confident. especially considering how Dax also was not good for the next host right after that. "sounds like you're just feeding your hosts to the symbiont" etc
the larger purpose of worf on ds9 is ultimately like. uninteresting fanservice but he is a great character for everyone else to interact with. like oh boy i can't wait to see who we force worf to hang out with next
speaking of quark gay sex, i haven’t talked about my idea for post-canon tom paris/quark business rivals-to-lovers arc in forever
imagine, a freshly divorced tom paris takes a break from starfleet by opening a captain proton-inspired retro scifi-themed restaurant on ds9. quark immediately sees him as competition plus is still bitter about that time he saved harry from getting scammed and sets out to undermine him. but tom already has experience being sworn enemies with a silly little guy (neelix) so he proves to be more than a match for quark. their back and forth escalates until finally they have crazy hate sex about it, beginning a cycle of tenuous allyships and betrayals
happy pride to siddig "not quite straight" el fadil and andrew "wait a minute! i wanna fuck this guy!" robinson
"Star Trek: Deep Space Nine functions as a refutation of the utopianism of The Next Generation because it highlights the moral compromises captains need to make to do their jobs" no, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine functions as a refutation of the utopianism of The Next Generation because every time some existentially horrifying shit happens to Miles O'Brien he's still expected to show up for work the next day.
when star trek was like In the evil universe straight people will become bisexuals. and we said well that's kinda fucked up but it's worth it for the bisexies. thanks. and then star trek was like okay.. let's see how much I can get away with 😜 In the Mirror Universe...... gay people will become pansexuals ...? and we said No that's not true and I'm not having fun anymore.
we were right for this btw we were absolutely drawing the line in exactly the right piece of sand. I'll believe that being raised in a universe with different morals would lead to more open bisexuality. but the pan thing literally was just an excuse to say actually our gay character got FUCKED by a GIRL 😆 MIRROR UNIVERSE SOOOO CRAZY LOL ‼️
Representation matters.
Happy Star Trek Day!
I was at DragonCon one year when Avery Brooks was on a panel, and a Black dude stood up and talked about how the year DS9 came on, he became the sole custodial guardian of his small son, and he was *terrified* and felt helpless, because he hadn’t really had a father himself, and he didn’t really know any Black fathers he particularly wanted to emulate, and no Black single fathers at all. He talked about how every week he’d put his kid to bed and sit down and watch Deep Space Nine, and think to himself, “Okay, this, I want us to be this kind of father and son,” and how, silly as it might sound, the idea that Ben could be there for Jake, all the time, successfully, and earn his admiration and trust, was the only source he really had of inspiration, the only voice that was telling him he could handle this job.
I swear to fuck there was a whole auditorium of people in tears by the time he was done, including both him and Brooks. It was one of the most beautiful moments I ever saw about the sometimes bloodless-sounding term “representation,” and about fandom in general, and I will never forget it.
Tng if it was actually good
