alright so i am not even sure who is gonna answer my question here but
if we consider sukuna's tattoos to be those given to criminals in japan instead of just, well, cursed technique markings like choso's or other things like receptacles of his extra body parts (since last i checked normal tattoos do not change depending on how many limbs you sprout and whether your face grows more eyes than before)
does the marking on his shoulders and on his belly actually refer to a specific crime? and the marking on his belly specifically, if it isn't merely symbolizing/sealing/housing his second mouth, does it refer to SA?
sorry i just read a weird fucking comment on reddit alleging that the comment's author's japanese history teacher decoded the markings and the one on his belly was what was given to japanese criminals for rape, the others tattoos for murder and arson
i have searched high and low and i cannot find any source on this, was the writer of that comment trolling? i think they were
aren't sukuna's markings supposed to symbolize either his body parts, or his mythological weapons (i hear he is inspired by an actual mythological figure that had a sword and a trident)? am i stupid?
sukuna may already have been dead by the time of the edo period, how was he getting those criminal tattoos? and even had he been alive, who would have given them to him? jesus????
which sorcerer was strong enough to do so considering he is known to have been undefeated? or maybe he himself wanted to terrify some poor people and asked them to give him criminal tattoos just for the shits and giggles he'd get watching them squirm, but i don't think it's too likely...? makes for a good fic idea though
i've put photos of his markings on top so people can check and maybe someone with more knowledge can pitch in and tell me if i am weird for thinking the markings look more like personalized tattoos than straight up criminal tattoos from the edo period...
even if they are like that, i think it's just the arms and maybe the face which he then modified and enchanted to change depending on his body shape? and the other tattoos he just got because he wanted to look like that, more dangerous?
like seriously i saw the images of what those tattoos were supposed to look like and they were only on arms and faces... but maybe there are other pictures from the time, paintings, that tell a different story? i don't think the neck tattoos signify a specific crime, because the stuff i have found doesn't mention that
it could be people got a bit too inspired by akaza from demon slayer who was ACTUALLY supposed to be from the edo period and was branded a criminal so now every time they see black bands on an antagonist they go "CRIMINAL TATTOO!!!!"
i dunno, i prefer to see them as something typical of people with very strong curse techniques, it develops naturally on them and can morph depending on the status of their soul or body, but again, i could be wrong, does the marking on his belly really translate to a criminal tattoo irl? and his neck, those circular ones on his shoulders? idk i am just so confused right now...
