In case anyone hasn't heard, the cyclospora outbreak affecting tons of people in the US right now is coming from Taylor Farms produce. Best to stay away from bagged lettuce and prepared salads completely right now, but especially the ones mentioned in the screenshot:

Taylor Farms Earthbound Farms Little Salad Bar (Aldi) Marketside (Walmart) Kroger House Brand Target private label greens Costco salads and greens etc Trader Joe's chopped salad kits and fresh produce Fast food: McDonalds, Taco Bell, (Yum! Brands), Chipotle, Subway, Pizza Hut, KFC, Olive Garden, Top Golf, Red Lobster, Burger King, etc.

This is not the first time I've heard about a Taylor Farms foodborne illness outbreak. I stopped eating their salads after reading a description of the conditions in their facilities. Doesn't sound like they've improved anything.

We need a fully funded and staffed FDA, and regulations with teeth - and that's exactly what we don't have under Trump. To make things worse, the CDC is no longer tracking these outbreaks. We're on our own.

Glad you asked. I have arrived at 'modern flax is Bullshit compared to what we had in historical textiles, the flax widely available for handspinning is basically the tow that would be discarded from textile creation and used with tar to caulk ships back in the day'

This naturally led me down a hole of 'why is the staple length of this stuff a bullshit 6 inches' and the answer is 'we have bred modern flax more for the oil than the fiber because cotton usurped the place of everyday textile thanks to slavery and the cotton gin'

Anyway, THIS led me to a rabbit hole that culminated in me finding flax seed bred for proper 30 inch tall plants for fiber, sold by some fellow minded nerds on a website that has not been updated since 1998 and you have to email them to buy anything.

Anyway how are all of you doing.

@trickymxtape I feel you - I've worked with harakeke before and I also take a moment to remember that it's a very different fiber to linen-flax.

I'd love to see more muka in our everyday textiles because that shit is STRONG!

Just reminiscing about this fanfiction that was amazing and had a huge following, but was never finished. It's good enough that I still check in to see if there are any updates either on the profile or comments to see if anybody knows what happened to the author. For a while now I've been assuming she passed because of how active they were and then absolutely nothing. But they did post in their profile that same year about dealing with anxiety about having a block and being afraid to post. I just hope that's the case. Even if they never finish the fic, I would love a proof of life message!

Lanaea, where ever you are, I hope you're ok and just know that Home is still on of my favorite Star Trek 2009 Jim/Spock stories ever! I still go back to it.
