HPV is linked to cancer wherever it's found. We associate it with cervical cancer, but it's linked to uterine, ovarian, throat, tongue, mouth, penile, testicular, AND anal cancers.

The vaccine has never been linked to increased sex in teenagers or unsafe sex practices.

As I was scrolling through the tags and replies, I noticed two recurring questions: 1) What if I already have HPV? and 2) Should I get it even if I'm asexual/never plan on having sex/etc.?

The short answer to both is, yes, you should still talk to your doctor about getting the vaccine.

Basically, the only people who should not get the vaccine are those who are pregnant, are moderately/severely ill, or have an allergy to yeast, latex, or some other component in the vaccine (again, check with your doctor to know what those might be just in case you aren't allergic). I guess, technically, if you're over 45 you are also ineligible, but that age restriction may change if the drug manufacturer ever conducts additional trials into the efficacy of Gardasil in older groups so it can't hurt to periodically check if the age range expands later.

From the Mayo Clinic page:

Does the HPV vaccine offer benefits if you're already sexually active? Yes. Even if you already have one strain of HPV, you could still benefit from the vaccine because it can protect you from other strains that you don't yet have [emphasis added]. However, none of the vaccines can treat an existing HPV infection. The vaccines protect you only from specific strains of HPV you haven't been exposed to already.

Gardasil targets 9 different high-risk HPV strains so you can protect yourself from the others even if you know you've already been infected by at least one.

Also, while sexual contact is the most common route of transmission, it is still possible to spread HPV in other ways.

Mothers can pass the infection to their babies during pregnancy or birth (vertical transmission).

The virus is hardy (it can withstand heat, drying, and alcohol-based disinfectants), so people with asymptomatic infections could be carrying the virus on their fingers and contaminating surfaces without realizing it. As long as the virus, through contact, eventually makes its way to a mucous membrane like the eyes or mouth, it can spread (horizontal transmission). There have even been a few documented cases of people getting HPV from tattoos (though those were more low-risk strains).

Virgins and children with no history of sexual abuse have been infected. So even if the risk is low, it still exists. If you can take steps to protect yourself from developing a life-threatening cancer, you should seriously consider it.

No, actually, you very much have not "earned the right" to harass an author because he isn't working fast enough for you. That's not how anything works.

George R. R. Martin has gone on the record to say that it makes him uncomfortable when fans joke about him dying before he finishes the series. Here's a link to an article about it. In the same article, it discusses how he won't give estimated completion dates anymore because "fans" keep getting mad at him when he can't meet them. I can't imagine working under that pressure without losing my temper, personally.

He is a human being, not your personal content-generating machine. The same goes for every other artist.

Oh boy, I was thinking about GRRM as I was reading the OP, and then of course someone had to comment about him. Everything @renthony said is spot on, and I just want to add a little more:

I am a writer. I am currently working on a novel that I started in 2021 and that still has a good chunk of work left before it’s really done. This is a standalone novel of fairly average length (current draft is just over 100k words), single POV, and will be the first piece of media ever released in this universe with these characters—meaning, I don’t have to worry about how existing fans of the story will receive it, and can just write it however pleases me. Those are great conditions to be writing a novel in, and it’s still taken me three years just to get it to the “nearly there” stage.

In contrast, the next ASOIAF novel will be significantly longer (A Feast for Crows was almost three times as long as my project), it will have a huge number of viewpoint characters to juggle, and there’s the little matter that GRRM is working under huge amounts of pressure because the ASOIAF novels have a huge fanbase who will be extremely disappointed if the next book doesn’t meet their expectations. Not to mention, I have to imagine that the almost universally hated ending of the GOT television show has just added to the pressure GRRM is feeling to make the final books as good as he possibly can. And on top of all that, he’s got a bunch of other projects going on—which he is allowed to do, by the way! He has not signed a contract with his fanbase forbidding him from working on any other creative projects until his next book is done!

Creators—including major ones like GRRM—are people, and they do not owe their fanbase anything. If GRRM decided to never write anything in the ASOIAF universe again, that would be his right, and while his fans would certainly be allowed to feel disappointment over that, that doesn’t mean that they’d have the right to insult or belittle him.

Creators are people. There is no level of success at which a creator is no longer a human being. And frankly, I do find it very weird that people in fandom who regularly circulate posts about how “Artists need to take care of themselves! It’s important for artists to rest and take care of their health! Artists aren’t obligated to constantly produce art!” will turn around and act like a big name artist murdered their firstborn if that artist chooses to prioritize their health over putting out their next thing immediately.

This. A while back I saw a post about this kind of thing, someone talking about seeing so many AFAB people in certain spaces commenting on how they were terrified of the idea that they could be men, because Men Are Bad. And this poster made some incredibly good points about how this harms people, how it delayed his ability to accept himself.

But then they went on to say how it's specifically, entirely about people hating trans masculinity. That post has lived in my drafts ever since, because I'm cis and couldn't find the right way to explain but...of course transphobia is part of that, but the lesson here was not "people in queer accepting spaces hate trans masculinity specifically". And that he framed it like that was kinda illustrative of the problem.

Because the examples he was giving were people who were, in fact, fully comfortable with the possibility of being non-binary. Their issue was with the possibility of being men. And the fact that this person saw all this, experienced a bunch of it personally, and came to the conclusion that queer, progressive spaces simply hate trans men...that he couldn't conceive that the issue is simply that these spaces are often actively hostile to men and men's masculinity, including cis men? Idk, it stuck with me as the whole issue repeated in microcosm.

a lot of people are somehow misinterpreting this post as saying that trans women Don't experience alienation or ostracization from queer, feminist, and/or progressive communities, to which i say: i am not responsible for your belief that trans men and trans women have to have entirely separate and opposite experiences. if you think that trans men experiencing something implies that trans women can't experience it, that's on you! you might want to sit and have a think about how you see the world and whether or not you're buying into the (deeply patriarchal!) idea that men and women are entirely separate from each other. you might learn something.

after i came out, i and a few other trans mascs were made to feel so unwelcome in a group where i thought we had been building valuable community that most of us ended up leaving.

i had been really vulnerable with these people, opening up about an emotionally abusive relationship i’d never been able to talk about before. when i lost that support i felt completely isolated and unable to stand up for myself in that relationship, which continued for a few more years.

the admins of another group, this one for non-men sw’s, told me i would have to leave if i identified as a trans man.

i’m a non-binary trans masc so i was allowed to stay, conditionally, but it fucks me up that a group of vulnerable workers were nonetheless willing to kick a vulnerable member to the curb just because they ID’d as a man.

periodically i’d seen posts by the few other trans masc members asking whether there was a sw support group specifically for trans folks, or trans masc folks specifically. those posts had no responses and no engagement except from ppl saying “if you find one, let me know.”

trans masc people in sw are VERY vulnerable and isolated, and it is cruel to force them out of the communities they’ve depended on for their own safety (and helped build) out of some myopic notion of keeping the space “safe.” safe from whom? safe from gender minorities who face high rates of sexual assault? whose bodily autonomy in the US is being taken away? many of whom are queer, disabled and BIPOC?

it’s lateral harm, it’s a real problem, and it makes trans mascs more isolated and less safe.
