The older I get the more I realise why a patriarchal society hates old women. We don’t want women who are knowledgeable, experienced, no longer bullshittable, more difficult to manipulate. We don’t want women to be authorities on themselves. Women who care less about everyone else’s opinion and trust their own. But more importantly, we see ageing in women as a failure in itself, a failure that negates all successes. So we refuse to let women age in power, whereas for men it accumulates. As a result, there is no power to be passed on to the next generation. This might not always be how it plays out, but it’s how the stage is set.
