I truly don't mean this in a holier-than-thou kind of way but imo a lot of the piss-on-the-poor behavior on this website stems not so much from a lack of reading comprehension per se, as from a determination to read other people's posts in the most deeply ungenerous possible way. There's various reasons for it (on the less sympathetic side, I think a lot of people subscribe to the middle school bully model of coolness and social rapport-building, namely "If I make make fun of/attack someone and you laugh/join in the dogpile that makes us part of the same in-group;" on the somewhat more sympathetic side, a lot of marginalized or otherwise mistreated people develop a hair-trigger hackles-up way of interacting with people as a preemptive self-defense strategy). But every time a post goes viral I'm like, man. @ Tumblr doing paranoid readings of absolutely everyone and everything around you is no way to live

This bumps up directly against the deep-seated christian beliefs that a) actually yes the reasons do matter and if you do good deeds for sinful reasons it's just as bad as doing bad deeds, and b) charity should only be the domain of the church. eg it's all well and good for the church to run a soup kitchen, but if some wealthy pensioner who's bored after retirement does it instead? That's suspicious, he's trying to turn the needy away from god, or he's trying to inflate his own ego, or he could even be acting from the pure unalloyed goodness of his heart and love for his fellow human beings, but the devil is still working through him.

My current not-approved-by-the-government opinion is that im not anyone's parent and i should not be responsible for random teenagers online. If I post smth thats 'meant for adults' and its labled as such then what happens from there is literally not my problem. If a teen- who is fully capable of turning on self moderation settings on their own btw- doesn't use a site's provided self moderation settings and they see boobs or dicks then like literally whatever, its neither the end of the world or a big deal. It shouldn't fall on me or a website or a tech company to do a parent's job, and also frankly i don't think a parent should be breathing down their 16 year old's neck on the off chance they do actually want to look at tits, but thats a discussion that americans will fucking throw a fit at so maybe we'll discuss that another day in better company.

So LA has been — and continues to — protest against ICE. These protests haven’t gotten any smaller or lost any momentum, but social media wasn’t reflecting it.

TikTok users, realizing that the platform/other social media are censoring/deleting/shadowbanning these protest videos, decided to find a workaround.

They’re calling it the LA Music Festival. Ice detention centers and other protest locations are “stages.” The hottest band is Rage Against the Machine. “Here’s what gear you should be bringing to stay safe at the LA Music Festival.”

And it fucking worked.

TikTok has become a proving ground for a lot of new music, meaning lots of labels and organizations have lucrative deals with TikTok to promote their new artists and music festivals. So they absolutely cannot censor the words “music festival” or train the algorithm to ignore it, or they risk endangering that very important revenue.

So now protest videos are flooding feeds again, but it’s the LA 24/7 Music Festival. Truly an incredible timeline we’ve landed in.
