something very important i learned from watching the good omens finale is that almost all show-writers will favour an unfulfilling ending that ensures the continuity of fandom over a happy ending that may or may not do so. they want people to keep talking about their shows, keep creating content over them. this is guaranteed when the ending is not what people hoped for. how else would you have a living fandom 14 years after bbc merlin’s finale? how else would we have supernatural’s meme entwined with every major life event? how else if not through hooking people on what could have happened but in the last moment taking it away?

the cruel thing though is that they failed to realise that we still would have never left the fandoms if our characters got the endings they deserved. they failed to understand that loyalty is not only born from misery but from love, too. we would have still kept their story alive if aziracrow retained their memories. we would have still kept writing fics if arthur got out of the lake. we would have still remained loyal because we got to see the characters we love get what we yearn for in real life.

moral of the story: no one is going to make a happy ending for your characters on screen. write it yourself.
