Somewhere along the line my parents got their wires crossed and became convinced I love Buc-ee’s (the gas station chain). Every Christmas I get some piece of Buc-ee’s merch. They send news articles when a new location opens near my hometown. They tell me every time they stop at one on a roadtrip.

Despite all this, I refuse to correct them because in my brain being the #1 fan of a literal gas station is less embarrassing than clarifying after almost a decade that I actually meant Bucky Barnes.

Folks in fan spaces act shocked when mainstream outlets use fandom/fanfic/booktok terms as if those groups don’t form an outsized portion of popular culture compared to their perceived specificity. Wine moms watch Heated Rivalry.

It’s part of the mainstream. Any journalist even somewhat plugged into the current mediascape is going to know what the toxic yaoi is, at least abstractly.

I’m not saying that’s good or bad, but it isn’t niche, and I’d argue hasn’t been niche for 15+ years.
