“What were astronauts like when they first returned from outer space? Nurse Dee O'Hara: ‘They have something, a sort of wild look, I would say, as if they had fallen in love with a mystery up there, sort of as if they haven’t got their feet back on the ground, as if they regret having come back to us… a rage at having come back to earth. As if up there they’re not only freed from weight, from the force of gravity, but from desires, affections, passions, ambitions, from the body. Did you know that for months John [Glenn] and Wally [Schirra] and Scott [Carpenter] went around looking at the sky? You could speak to them and they didn’t answer, you could touch them on the shoulder and they didn’t notice; their only contact with the world was a dazed, absent, happy smile. They smiled at everything and everybody, and they were always tripping over things. They kept tripping over things because they never had their eyes on the ground.’”

What's going on in the congo rn is one of many many reasons that the right to repair is a VITAL tenant in leftism imo
At this point smartphones, laptops, and other similar devices are necessary for daily life in the US. Like if I did not have a phone and a laptop, I couldn't hold down a job, it would be extremely difficult to access public transportation, my education depended upon my ability to access the internet, etc. Tech companies know that their products are indispensable. So do they make products that last? No of course not, they need you buying a new device every two years. That just makes sense under capitalism. But ofc this system spreads far beyond our borders; this system of planned obsolescence is supported by the plunder of the global south for lithium (like in Bolivia) and cobalt (like in Congo).
The imperialist extraction of resources could be challenged if, say, we could repair a device rather than needing to purchase a new one. Companies like apple know this, and have gone out of their way to make such things impossible just to continue making shit products for too much money. It sucks!
can i ask for some reading about what's going on in Congo and how it's related to cobalt mining?
Here's an article that will give you an overview:

700 Palestinians were killed in the last 24 hours and the airstrikes are more violent each night. Gaza's hospitals have fuel left for two more days. Israel only allowed aid into Gaza on the condition they didn't carry fuel. The Indonesian hospital has shut down already, because doctors have no supplies and no choice but to let the wounded die. They're calling it a collapse but the term doesn't do it justice.
Over a 100 incubator babies are at risk. There are 50.000 pregnant women in Gaza right now, and 5.500 due to give birth this month. Menstruating people are taking pills in order to stop their periods, because they do not have pads or water to maintain hygiene. Surgeons are operating without anesthesia. Water is not reaching Gazans because there's no electricity or fuel for water pumps.
There's no excuse for this. Israel justifies the airstrikes by saying they want to destroy Hamas infrastructure and release the hostages, but they have refused to negotiate for their release. Hamas informed Israel they wanted to release two elderly women without anything in return, and Israel refused. Netanyahu said they wouldn't take their own civilians back because it was "mendacious propaganda." When the hostages were finally released, Netanyahu prohibited the hospital from giving press releases. Yocheved Lifshitz went behind their backs and talked to the press anyway, saying she was treated very well by Hamas, but the government abandoned them. They're being used as straw men. Israel is conditioning the entry of fuel to the release of hostages and yet, according to The Wall Street Journal, when Hamas proposed to exchange 50 hostages for fuel they denied. IDF officials have said they fear the release of more hostages because that might withhold the order to their ground invasion. They do not care as long as they can use the hostages as a pretext for their slaughtering.
There's a turning tide for Palestine in public support. Support for Israel was built through decades of propaganda and we are making a dent into it. Zionists are desperate, holding zoom meetings to promote zionism, but we have to do so much more. We have to shame people in power into supporting the Palestinian cause.
Keep yourself updated and share Palestinian voices, looking to inform yourself from the sources. Palestinians have asked of us only that we share, tweet and post, over and over. Muna El-Kurd said every tweet is like a treasure to them, because their voices are repressed on social media and even on this very app. Make it your action item to share something about the Palestinian plight everyday. Take action. You can participate in boycotts wherever you are in the world, through BDS guidelines. Right now, they are focusing on boycotting (don't be overwhelmed by gigantic boycott lists. Only boycott additional brands if you can):
Carrefour
HP
Puma
Sabra
Sodastream
Ahava cosmetics
Israeli fruits and vegetables
Push for a cultural boycott - pressure your favorite artist to speak out on Palestine and cancel any upcoming performances on occupied territory (Lorde cancelled her gig in Israel because of this. It works.)
If you can, participate in direct action or donate. Palestine Action works to shut down Israeli weapons factories in the UK and USA, and have successfully shut down one of their firms in London. Some of the activists are going on trial and are calling for mobilizing on court.
Call your representatives. The Labour Party in the UK had an emergency meeting after several councilors threatened to resign if they didn't condemn Israeli war crimes. Calling to show your complaints works, even more if you live in a country that funds genocide.

Gaza is under siege
Human Rights Watch confirms Israel is using white phosphorus gas on Gaza, violating int’l law
Israel cut off Gaza’s electricity and water, so no food preservation, health care, or basic means to live. Internal media coverage can go only so far without power. Hard to see the true extent of turmoil, likely by design.
Complete blockade from humanitarian aid means people starve and die from Israel’s siege on Gaza.
None of the 2M Palestinians can leave due to the open air prison Israel created around the city. Almost half of them are children.
Western media continues to cover only one side of this conflict, tainting the world’s understanding of what’s truly occurring. Public officials blindly follow suit. What a tragedy it is.
My heart and thoughts are with all those suffering in the region as a result.
Free Palestine
The audacity of every western media outlet asking some Palestinian activist or politician for an interview and always starting it off by asking "do you condemn Hamas?"
The most disgusting part is when he either doesn't answer as that's not the right question to ask or he says he does and then explains what the Palestinian people are going through and wants to talk about solutions they just keep asking him that. The worst one was after he explained that 6 of his family members died from a building collapsing and the reporter went "I'm very sorry to hear about that......do you condemn hamas?"
Never do you see the interviewer ask an Israeli if they condemn the IOF or the government for upholding the racist apartheid system. They want to spin the narrative so we can view Israel as a bastion of democracy, while omitting the record cases of human rights violations. The interviewer gives the Israeli a pat on the back, while the Palestinian is faced with a challenge to either denounce terrorism or not. No sympathy is EVER exteneded to the Palestinian people.
Ukraine's Revolution of Dignity. Ivan Bohdan. Kyiv, 2014.
all this blood is on the hands of everyone who decided to ‘stand with israel’ this week, knowingly or unknowingly, every single one of them
Israel has dropped more bombs in a week than the US used during a year of the most brutal parts of their invasion of Afghanistan. Thousands of rifles are being handed out to Israeli citizens, who are committing pogroms against Palestinians. All food, water, medicine, and electricity is being cut off from Gaza, all Palestinians are being ordered to leave within 24 hours or be declared hostile targets when there every exit is under blockade. Officials in Israel are threatening to use nukes.
Let us not mince words. This is an apartheid, settler-colonial state committing genocide. Everyone “standing with Israel” will be remembered the same as those who “stood with” Rhodesia, or French Algeria, or Generalplan Ost.
