I made a thing... and my Dad helped. Haha . Deep water rafted and wicking aquaponics system using expanded clay and rock wool in netcups. . Wicking provided in part by Dr. David Suzuki. Well, technically an organic cotton tshirt that had his 70's likeness on it. But same same. . Experimenting with lettuce to see if there is a need to bag the root systems to avoid the fresh roots getting chomped. . Hugelkultur beds (condensed) - build instructions. If you're looking to build this type of garden bed, or become more "prepared" and less dependant on the system, ...or want to learn, but don't know where to begin... then this might be for you. I hope this is helpful. Instructions: 1. Sod removal 2. DigTrench 12-18" deep x 8' long. *Remove large rocks medium sized rocks* 3. Line trench with wet cardboard 4. Fill 8-10" with well rotted wood 5. Add a few rounds of non-rotted wood aligned with the direction of the trench *soak* 6. Add dead fall sticks aligned with the direction of the trench with soil to cover. 7. Add sod face-down (best if left upside down for a few days prior without any light) to try and kill it. *soak* 8. Add soil 2-3" Amend aggregate soil with seaweed 9. Add 4" straw 10. Add well mixed rotted horse manure (no smell) and aggregate soil to 3". 11. Add 3" more straw and face-down sod to reinforce the sides of the mound. 12. Add aggregate soil 13. Add top soil *soak* *soak cardboard* *cover with cardboard* - When planting into the mound use your hands or a tool to clear a hole in the mound then add topsoil and plant into the topsoil. *Zerowaste tip* cut up, write on and use your old yogurt, ice cream or other plastic pots as plant markers. - The longer the roots, and/or more nutrient hungry (heavy feeder) your plant is, the closer you plant it to the top of the mound, giving it access to ~2' deep trench filled with short, medium and long-release nutrients, trace elements and a wooden core functioning as a fungal superhighway. *In theory you could probably get mycelium running through that rotten wood core... and then possibly some edible mushrooms *but that's another challenge for another day because it takes some prep*. - Hugelkulture is a way of building a very low maintenance garden, because it absorbs and stores a lot of moisture, but also allows for plenty of 02 at the root zone. Hugelkultur beds . Building some new veg. herb and fruit garden beds using one of my favorite techniques. It's a German word meaning hill culture. It's a longterm no-dig, mounded garden bed called Hugelkultur. Initially its dug down and the soil is removed, I don't have a lot of big stumps, so instead I lined it with local cardboard. (Dyes in some Imported boxes are toxic)... and note that if you use old pallets that you make sire they are HT (heat treated pallets) vs. CT (chemically treated). The marking is usually stamped or burned to the pallet. This retains water in the soil and allows a border for Mycelium (mushrooms) to grow along. I then added some larger decomposing logs, and rotting wood are placed at the bottom of the trench, for longterm carbon, silicone and Nitogen sources. This is then covered with smaller wood debris that will break down quickly and facilitate structure for the mound and air pockets within the mound. At this point I also just added some mixed wood ash from my bonfire the other night from clearing debris out of the "bluebell wood" behind our place. We'll use this for some longterm carbon source/storage. Next... we'll add some leafy matter, that I raked off my parents property, then I'm gonna find some local straw, some straw, some local manure, and then add back some soil. Then we'll add Some more straw, some moss for water retention, and then some topsoil. A hugelkutur (Hoo-ghel-cuul-ture) bed is similar to a lasagna bed except for the wood, and the mounding. Permaculture is about building soil, and producing environments that allow longterm use of soil.
