#and the librarians are like “why not six more?” and i think that's very based of them (OP's very correct tag)
so wildly obnoxious when you agree with the starting point of someone's stance only for them to hard turn into things you DON'T agree with and now you have to defend the thing that was originally annoying you
"too many authors in the current market are focusing on selling 'spice' instead of telling interesting stories"
"oh yeah, i agree. i started reading one that i heard a lot about and it just wasn't-"
"and it's all of these women reading their fucking mommy porn out in public like FREAKS"
*through gritted teeth* "people should be allowed to read whatever they want, and actually these books should be left alone and you should shut up about it"
"The America I loved still exists, if not in the White House or the Supreme Court or the Senate or the House of Representatives or the media. The America I love still exists at the front desks of our public libraries."
-Kurt Vonnegut, A Man Without a Country
You can replace [ACTIVITY YOU ENJOY] with [SCROLLING] but watch out. This sucks bad 👍
Some things about this post since getting quite a few notes:
1. If you see this post, highly recommend taking it as an opportunity to set a timer for 15 minutes and switch over to ACTIVITY YOU ENJOY. if after those 15 minutes, you want to go back to scrolling, that's okay!
2. Huge shout out to this popping up in my notifs often, bc I do go back to activity.
3. I think there are times where scrolling is fine. Right now, for example, I'm being connected to a machine for two hours to donate plasma and platelets. Yes this is a brag but it is also a time where scrolling is one of the few things I can do. (Though I will probably also read or watch something on phone lol)
hmmm, this seems to be some kind of curse breaking spell… be free ye reader

This has been my main argument against "AI" from the very beginning.
OpenAI scraped the entire web. All of which had been a labor of love from humans. Wikipedia is the backbone of a lot of LLMs, and that was volunteer human labor. They stole it and now they're selling it back to us.
And worse, they're trying to destroy the free sources that they stole from. It's destruction of human knowledge on an unprecedented scale. The burning of the library of Alexandria has nothing on this.

Good to know.
when I was in high school I had a literature teacher who had a policy of unlimited extra credit. All you had to do was read a book by a notable author (his discretion) and have a little chat with him after school to prove that you read it. No limits, no need for variety (one month I decided I really loved Kurt Vonnegut and just read everything of his I could get my hands on).
Yes, I was tearing through books constantly, and talking to this teacher at least weekly. Because even though I always loved reading as a kid, literature was always a very weak subject for me in terms of a teaching-to-standardized-test school setting (I just do awful on "what color were the curtains" type multiple choice questions. Those details don't stick in my memory THEY JUST DON'T). But that didn't matter for this class. I could just read my way out of any bad test score. I have always had fond memories of how I "fudged" my way through that class and "abused' the extra credit policy.
I was thinking about it again today, and only just now realized that he absolutely tricked me into being well-read, while my teenage self thought I was totally getting away with something. THAT MOTHERFUCKER. I hope he's doing well.
“I’m sorry you couldn’t find me.
I have been in the woods.
I put myself there
because I couldn’t be good.
I have been running with foxes
and running with crows
and I have found myself a home
where no one goes.”

"You Just Need to Lose Weight": And 19 Other Myths About Fat People is a must-read. I want to give a copy to everyone I know. Aubrey Gordon expertly and carefully slices through the myths about fatness to the actual scientific proof. For example, fatness itself is not linked to unhealthiness: while exercise and eating a balanced diet will help you become more healthy, weight loss itself is not the cause of that better health, nor is it an accurate measurement of health. She also unpicks myths about skinny shaming, the use of the word "fat," why we find it so hard to picture a fat person as desirable, and the issues of what the body positivity movement has become.
One of the biggest bombshells for me was that in addition to BMI being created by a sociologist with no medical basis, and is inaccurate for anyone other than white, European cis men, but that in the 1990s, the National Institute of Health twice, against the recommendations of a medical panel of experts, lowered the threshold of what it meant to be considered medically fat, and that some of the stakeholders involved in that decision stood to benefit from the uptick in weight-loss industry and medication sales that followed. We also decided to apply BMI to children for the first time. The obesity "epidemic," then, emerged from the shift of the BMI standards of who is considered obese, not from a true shift in the population.
Overall, this is a perfect primer in the issues around fatness, from its basis in racism and ableism to the desire to neutralize the word "fat." Gordon includes challenging questions and thought-starters to help readers investigate and study their own conceptions about fatness and health. I genuinely /might/ start giving this book to everyone I know.

Hate how much A Little Treat has infested me. Any small discomfort and I'm immediately like oooo maybe exchanging money for goods and services will fix this situation.
Sometimes
SOMETIMES
Going to the library can activate A Little Treat pleasure centers
Coming home with music and books and some movies, and paying zero dollars for it all
It’s pretty awesome
You don't even have to leave the house if you use the resources the library can provide electronically (Libby, Hoopla, etc.).
Oh fuck yeah this is a library post now!!!!
