latest comic idea i came up with while talking to @missiletoe: ratatouille but instead of a rat who can cook it is a frog who writes the most amazing yaoi. it is titled "frogjoshi." everyone says, "how can a frog write yaoi? what does a frog know about gay love?" and yet, she writes the most beautiful BL stories of all time. a world-renowned yaoi critic reads her novel, and is moved to tears having been reminded of the first yaoi she ever read, long ago, before she even knew what yaoi was. she demands to meet the author. they bring out the frog. roll credits

fyi the point of fucking up your data patterns isnt to avoid suspicion. it’s to make EVERYONE suspicious. same logic as the bloc, pals. protect your comrades, be suspicious. ESPECIALLY if you aren’t doing anything likely to get you arrested.
the state is less omniscient and significantly more incompetent than you’d think. overextend their resources at every possible opportunity. make them cry wolf repeatedly. run their data analysis agents fucking ragged. and strike. attack.
YES i’m a postgrad statistics researcher and i can tell you that the state honestly has NO IDEA what to do with the data it collects, it has an obsession with big data but it’s almost impossible to work with in practice. the traditional statistical approaches that are used can’t be scaled up, the adapted approaches are substantially weakened, and the machine learning approaches have the same problems and often tell them nothing. data scientists are only just coming around to these issues too, most still just push on with it anyway - incompetence is the word. above all this though, like you say, the biggest issue for the state is at the point of data collection. they will NEVER get anything useful if they’re collecting shitty messy data. they will eventually figure out that the real solution is working how to collect accurate and meaningful data, we should make it as difficult as possible for them to do that

TrackMeNot automatically does randomly generated searches on a variety of search engines to obscure your real searches and fuck with analytics, and you can set it up to work with anything that has a search bar (including facebook, twitter, amazon, youtube, etc)
WhatCampaign replaces analytics parameters in links with the string “FuckOff”. I thought there was a similar extension that used random strings, but I can’t seem to find it
Privacy Possum is a fork of Privacy Badger with a focus on costing tracking companies as much money as possible, and idk if my limited tech knowledge is enough to understand what it does but the description does say it falsifies some data so that’s good enough for me

(While they're looking at eachother cutely, we hear a woman screaming in the background "WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU CHEATED ON ME WITH MY BROTHER???" . Then somebody jumps off a window)

I had a dream last night where I built and released a computer game called HORSE and all it is is that you play as a horse and most of the gameplay is you being ridden and having to obey cues from your rider (which are visually displayed on the screen). You move through beautiful vast 3D vistas while you hear and see the story of your rider, a young nobleman who's just been given his first horse, happen around you. He makes friends with a ragtag group of adventurers and might romance one of his party members et cetera but you have no part in that, your job is to be a horse. How good a horse you are affects your bond with him and if you're really bad you can get sold to a glue factory. It's an intensely narrative game where this young boy grows up and might overthrow the king or be banished and flee on his treasured horse or might do a variety of other things all depending on how good he is at controlling his horse and on whether his horse takes him where he wants to go or charges off into the woods and gets him kidnapped by bandits or whatever. You don't have any special powers or anything you're literally just a horse.
In my dream this game did incredibly well for no reason, but when I woke up all I could think of was how my dream self had ripped off my previous game idea, Fine, you can play as a magic sword, which is a card battler where you're the magical sword of destiny in the hands of the Chosen One and the story depends on what battles you win or lose; you can intentionally get a weak Chosen One killed and end up in the hands of someone stronger who'll get you cooler cards for your deck but could become an evil tyrant, that kind of thing.
Is HORSE from a first-horse or a third-horse perspective?
First-horse. And if you're too disobedient a horse then they can put blinders on you to restrict your vision and make you listen to your rider more.
Important side not about HORSE is that you cannot understand the language that the human characters speak. You should learn any verbal riding commands pretty quickly just through gameplay, but you can never be one hundred per cent sure what's specifically happening in intense plot scenes and thus can't make deliberate long-term plans to control the narrative yourself. You have to trust that your human rider knows what he's doing and is making good decisions. You're just a horse.

if they had bad horse actions I would be the most obedient horse of all time except I would bite or step on feet every time the game offered me the prompt, only prince dingdong gets to stroke me, everyone else gets chomped or stomped

I’ve been in the middle of the ocean at night and now live in texas and it is so hard to explain to people that no, they have not ever seen the night sky. It is so hard to explain to people that what they think is a proper night sky is fucking pathetic. A disgrace.
People talk about how you can’t see stars in the city and yeah, that’s true, but their concept of “seeing stars” is being able to make out orion’s belt.
So, so few people have see the sky in all its glory and it’s not sad. It’s a fucking crime. Seeing a perfectly dark night, no clouds, not a hint of light pollution? That’s a fucking religious experience.
The sky the vast vast majority of us grew up with is not the sky that inspired us to look up. It is not the sky that inspired constellations. You can’t even see most constellations.
Your ancestors looked at the night sky and said “surely, that is where the gods must live.” And you might be lucky if you can see hardly more than a handful of stars.
The sky is full, fucking FULL, of stars, and you’ve never seen them.
I remember the first time I saw a properly dark sky and was like ‘oh that’s why it’s called the milky way’ and promptly started to cry
When we were on a field trip to the middle of the red sea, I remember us all crowding at the end of the boat that didn’t have lights and just lying on our backs and staring

You think of the night sky like fairy lights on black velvet, but it’s not it’s not it’s like, like, dust in sunlight, like - I can’t find the words.
The stars are everywhere, like sugar, like glitter, like dust. You can’t find the constellations at first, not because you can’t recognise them, but because there’s so many stars you can’t pick out the familiar line of Orion’s belt. The North star has gone from bright familiarity to almost vanishing among a thousand, a hundred thousand, a million other lights. The milky way is a line of light arcing across the sky like a moon-trail on water only infinitely, infinitely bigger.
And for the first time in your life you’ll understand why people call it a dome, because it is, it’s three dimensional in exactly the way a city skyscape isn’t.
You’ll understand why Luthien Tinúviel danced under starlight, not moonlight, why people in a time before we knew the earth was round still looked up and wondered and built telescopes and dreamed about the stars.
The stars are endless and ancient and infinite and you will stand with your head craned back and your rucksack forgotten at your feet and you’ll feel like you’re falling upwards into that great bright sky like it’s calling you home and you’ll wonder how you ever thought the stars were beautiful before tonight when all you’d ever seen were the naked empty skyscapes of your home. And you’ll cry and you’ll spend the rest of your time there gazing up and wondering and imagining what it would be like to stand among those bright silver flecks
And then you’ll come home, and look up, and fall in a different kind of love with that handful of blazing stars to stubborn to be outdone by the whole of human invention, leading you home despite the light pollution and the clouds and the endless bustle of this shrinking planet.
this is not a shot from a space telescope overlayed behind a woods, or anything. that’s not the sky as kepler or hubble or james webb see it. that’s the sky from a dark sky park in michigan. that’s the view you are missing out on from right here on earth. that’s the view that has been stolen from you.
I fell in love with the sky as a child growing up in western Minnesota, miles from a small town, near a massive lake and just downhill from an 18-hole golf course - the pure darkness broken only by a single bright light I could escape by hauling my telescope up that hill or into a nearby field
I’d often set an alarm to wake me in the middle of the night, so it was as dark as possible and my eyes as dark-adapted as they coud get, and starlight alone was enough to guide me

Re: the last post, the article mentions that some places use clams to test the toxicity of the water. It’s like that in Warsaw- we get our water from the river, and the main water pump has 8 clams that have triggers attached to their shells. If the water gets too toxic, they close, and the triggers shut off the city water supply automatically.
The clams are just better at measuring the water quality than any man-made sensors.

You guys have no idea how many students in my advanced fiction workshop didn’t know any of this when writing their stories.
Okay, but someone please explain question marks when followed by a dialogue tag. How do?

“What do you mean?” he asked. “But there’s a full stop as part of the question mark!”
She nodded gravely. “I know!” she said. “A lot of people find this confusing. But the speech tag belongs to the line of dialogue, it’s still part of the sentence, so it’s wrong to capitalise it.”

Thank you, because having more than one way to interrupt dialogue is not confusing at all lol (I’ve only seen em dashes inside quotations, the other way hurts my brain—I prefer commas).

hello!! today i present: an introductory lil powerpoint for those of you who may have seen '90s kon floating around, maybe heard a few things about him via dash osmosis, etc., but don't really know his deal, or why he's so different vibes-wise from t-shirt kon.
(the answer to that one is that t-shirt kon is the 2003 retcon i referred to in slide 6; in some ways he's an entirely different character before that!)
*note: i did kinda simplify the "is kon a metahuman clone or a kryptonian" thing. his early comics kinda contradict each other on this! for example, he's not depowered by the lack of sun during final night, but later after sins of youth it takes sunlight to charge him back up, etc.
