like the point is eurydice signs the contract so that she can survive. she's hungry and cold. and hades promises food, shelter, safety, even comfort. but she still doesn't get what she's after because it kills her. we submit to the capitalism machine because we need food, we need somewhere to lay our head in order to be people, but it strips away our personhood anyway.
as much as i get the sentiment behind "make more bad art" there's gotta be a better way of communicating "you don't have to be technically proficient or hold yourself to a specific standard of practice" that doesn't sound as backhanded lol
guys the magic key is to iterate
You make iterations, because you get better by doing them. I teach art and when one of my students gets dejected for 'being bad' I double-check: this is prob the first time you're [sculpting a flower] right? right. Well is the first time you played soccer, or tennis, or a musical instrument, or drove a car, also the best time you ever did? you probably got better by doing it more often.
and ofc it's not magic in the sense that you'll be perfect by next Tuesday, but as a wise person on the internet once said, the time will pass anyway.
the other secret magic part is curiosity. that is, if you're really doing the work because the material and/or subject matter are interesting, the curiosity will help you improve. if you're only doing it for likes or because you think it's where you belong because of external forces, then the intrinsic motivation won't be enough to carry you along the endless iterations.
My top advice for anyone starting a new craft, hobby, or art form is to expect the first attempt to be ugly. Like if you are crocheting for the first time whatever your first project is not going to look right when youāre done and thatās how it should be. Every attempt after will be a little less ugly until you make something you can be proud of. If you expect to make something beautiful and gorgeous and exactly like what you envisioned you are setting yourself up for disappointment and increasing the likelihood of being discouraged to the point of not trying again.
People complaining about Peters tech being too high tech in brand new day like the movie aint set in 2028 in a world that had a man in a flying metal suit in 2008, artificial intelligence in 2015, and drones that could create life like illusions in 2024 that stuff is probably low quality tech in their world, not to mention Peter's a genius who was literally introduced as a dumpster diver in his first appearance
Also thereās all the tech the guardians had, like that repairing device rocket used on their ship, and Tony was on that ship for a hot minute on his way back to earth. Thereās no way he didnāt bring back some fresh hot knowledge to improve Terran tech in the years after the blip.

So obviously Ned remembers Peter. And with MJ they kind of made it ambiguous BUT I think she does remember and hereās why.
Okay, so the spell didnāt erase memories it just suppressed them. When Jean was in MJās mind the first time she wasnāt powerful enough to access them. Then we have the catalyst of MJ finding the letter and realizing there is something missing, but she canāt remember what (which must be so devastating to go through might I add). Later, when Jean is more powerful, sheās in everyoneās mind a mile or two from the island, Peter lets her in his, she see Peterās memories.
Now two things could be possible from here. 1) Jean was able to bring those memories up a bit but not fully, they need a catalyst to unlock themāNed with the handshake, MJ with the letter or necklace. 2) While Jean was in Peterās mind, she was able to transfer Peterās memories of moments of them together into MJ and Ned, but again theyāre fuzzy and need a catalyst.
Personally I like option one, just because I put more thought into it, but tell me what yāall think. Theyāre probably not going to reveal the real reason they can remember so itās fun to theorize.
I love the idea of Ned remember Peter either quicker or more easily than MJ for a few reasons. One heās a lot more trusting and optimistic than MJ, heās more likely to let down his guard and allow his past feelings and emotions toward Peter return. Two he knew Peter for a lot longer than MJ did, thereās a lot more of his life that probably feels incomplete in his mind where thereās a Peter shaped hole. It makes sense that even before he was reunited with Peter all of that love and appreciation for him shifted onto Spider-Man because in Nedās mind thereās no difference between Peter Parker and Spider-Man. In a way Ned forgot about Peter but never stopped loving him. Donāt get me wrong I love Peter and MJās relationship and I really hope that eventually they get to be happy together again but I like how it wasnāt immediate remembrance and I really hope they go forward with Ned being the first to reform a deep bond with him. I love when non-romantic relationships are treated with just as much importance as romantic ones and I think this is a great opportunity to show that.
i really really really really really like hadestown's repeated use of "eurydice was a hungry girl" because at first pass you might think oh, she's scrappy and street smart and her ambition is going to be the foil to orpheus's idealist romanticism. but nope! no she is literally hungry. she is starving. that is her motivator and everybody knows it. she loves, oh she does, but she can't be fucking blamed for fulfilling her physical needs first.
Everyone loves a cycle aware Orpheus but what about a cycle aware Eurydice? Eurydice who tries her hardest to resist the hunger and the cold. Tries to convince Orpheus to just LOOK UP time and time again to no avail. Eurydice who KNOWS and still fails. She knows heās gonna turn around. She knows theyāre not gonna make it out of hell together. But she hopes. Every time she hopes that he loves her a little bit less than the last time. Hopes he wonāt look back. But of course, Orpheus is still Orpheus. And he loves her more than anything.

Not me thinking I wouldnāt cry watching the hadestown pro shot as if I didnāt cry both times I saw it live as well as everytime I see a new set of Orpheus and Eurydice telling the story again.

Featuring Jude and Cardan from The Queen of Nothing by Holly Black! Another scene requested where I took a slight detour to showcase what we didn't see on page (when Jude was unconscious) but was hinted at in the aftermath (Cardan's bloody jacket). Does anyone else's cat shed fur when they're startled or agitated? Mine leaves behind clumps, which for a Devon Rex is dire. I channeled that energy with Cardan's agitated whipping tail and shedding leaves.
Pomegranate have been my go-to fruit to add to my morning oats for over a year now, so it was a fun time to sprinkle them all over this.
the one-two punch of āeat your youngā and ādamage gets doneā is so fucking underrated btw. this really raunchy, visceral callout of war profiteering and the people in power who sold out future generations for the sake of capital, followed immediately by this soaring coming-of-age anthem about waking up into the harsh reality of the world we were handed, being expected to bear both the consequences AND the blame, the feeling of powerlessness and the deep, aching nostalgia for a time when we didnāt have to constantly reckon with such a bleak existence

Very annoying to me how publishers have:
Begun describing high fantasy novels with romantic side plots as "romantasy," and
Started to apply the "romantasy" label to YA books.
One of my favourite books, To Gaze Upon Wicked Gods, was published as romantasy. It was labeled and marketed as such. It is not that. It is a high fantasy novel that has an unhealthy colonizer/colonized romantic subplot that is sufficiently portrayed as unhealthy. 99% of criticism toward the book would go away if people did not go into it through the lens of "this is a romance" and continue to take the incorrect assessment approach of believing the book is romanticizing the plotline.
Books like this are HIGH FANTASY. High fantasy focuses more on world building, interpersonal relationships, political intrigue, and magic systems that are not based in our own world. Any romantic sideplot is a sideplot. ROMANTASY is a romance that uses the fantasy world as a backdrop - world building/politics/magic systems are secondary to that romance.
Romantasy is also pretty much widely accepted as a steamy genre. YA novels should not be as steamy as romantasy gets. (Of course, we do have SJM - whose books should never be published as YA and are now getting repackaged, but I digress.)
Perhaps there's something to be said for "YA romantasy" as a seperate, independent genre to romantasy itself, or as a romantasy subcategory.
But publishers should not be holding up books like Divine Rivals, a favourite of mine, and calling them "romantasy." Yes, it's romantic! Yes, it has fantasy elements! But it does not have any spice, nor should it since it's a YA novel.
The way I see it is that romantasy is a genre where the fantasy world is set up as a mechanism for the romance which is the main plot but I donāt like to call books that I enjoy romantasy even when they are because I have a negative opinion of a lot of the romantasy books I see and so I conflate the genre with those opinions. I would classify Divine Rivals as a romantasy because the main plot is the romance and the magical elements are all set up to serve the romance but itās done well in my opinion and has mote substance than the standard romantasy. I donāt necessarily think all romantasy have a lot of smut but I think a lot of them do so I can see why the genre might be associated with smut.

Iāve decided after reading @tkingfisherās Hemlock & Silver that what I love about her novels (besides the well developed world building, the compelling plots, characters who feel real and flawed, and romances that make me beam even when theyāre subplots) is that I can always feel the passion for whatever thing that originally drew her attention and made her go āOh this would make a great book!ā. Swords, perfumes, paladins, bugs, poisonsā her curiosity is so captivating.
