A semicolon is a place in a sentence where the author couldhave ended it, and chose not to.

I have a semicolon tattooed on my wrist. It’s a reminder to myself not to give up.

When I got it, I was hurting.

When I got it, it hurt.

There were wounds on my heart, and wounds on my skin.

But like all tattoos, it healed.

And so did my heart.

Life hurts.

It leaves scars. It leaves marks.

You’ll see them, if you care to notice.

But eventually the marks from your past stop hurting.

When I got my tattoo, my dad sighed, and my mom cried.

He saw the ink, she saw the pain.

He saw his kid making a dumb choice.

She saw her kid choosing not to make a dumber one.

My sister said she was proud of me, she has scars of her own.

There’s a lot of semicolons in the story of my life, so many places that could have been the end.

But the story is not over. There are so many words that still have to be written.

There is so much more of this adventure to be had.

Every good story makes use of punctuation, so mine must be a pretty good story.

My story is still in the making, still shifting, filling with words and filling with punctuation.
