CBT Model in FND (Functional Neurological Disorder) Context
Context / Trigger: Entering a social situation (e.g., a family gathering, public place, workplace).
Thoughts (Cognitions):
"I can’t control my symptoms."
"What if others think I’m exaggerating or faking?"
"Everyone will stare and notice something is wrong."
"If my symptoms appear, I’ll lose control."
Perceived Social Risk (Beliefs / Appraisals):
Fear of negative judgment and rejection from others.
Belief that symptoms will be interpreted as weakness, laziness, or deceit.
Attention Bias (High & Abnormal Symptom Monitoring):
Hyperfocus on bodily sensations (tremors, weakness, numbness).
Over-monitoring for potential “triggers” of symptoms.
Increased internal scanning → amplifies severity of symptoms.
Reliance on safety/protective behaviours to manage perceived threat.
Symptoms (Physical & Emotional):
Heightened anxiety.
Exacerbation of FND symptoms (seizures, tremors, paralysis episodes, dissociation).
Somatic stress symptoms: sweating, rapid heartbeat, sleep disturbance, muscle tension.
Protective Behaviours (Safety Strategies):
Avoiding social situations entirely.
Withdrawing/dissociating when symptoms rise.
Exaggerating control strategies (e.g., stiffening muscles, over-resting).
Internal suppression of anxiety rather than adaptive coping.
Dependence on others for reassurance.
CBT-Based Techniques & Strategies for FND:
Mindfulness & Grounding:
Redirect attention to the present moment (body scan, breath awareness).
Reduce over-monitoring of symptoms.
Cognitive Restructuring:
Challenge dysfunctional beliefs (e.g., “They’ll think I’m faking” → “Most people don’t know about FND and are more focused on themselves.”).
Perspective Shifting:
“If your best friend had FND, would you see them as weak or fake?”
Build self-compassion and reduce shame.
Graded Exposure / Systematic Desensitisation:
Gradually face social situations (small → larger).
Pair with relaxation skills to reduce avoidance.
Behavioural Experiments:
Drop protective behaviours (e.g., test attending a short event without leaving early).
Collect evidence: “What actually happened?”
Emotion & Stress Regulation Skills:
Breathing techniques, progressive muscle relaxation, or vagus nerve stimulation.
👉 This model shows how thoughts, attention, and behaviours interact with FND symptoms in social contexts, and how CBT targets each level to break the cycle. _______ A CBT Tool for FND - Click Me

A Rant About Living With PNES
Let me tell you about the most isolating, infuriating, misunderstood hellscape: living with psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES).
You know what’s wild? Having your body betray you in ways that leave you crumpled on the floor, shaking, gasping, or frozen—only to have people (including doctors) side-eye you and say, “But the tests are normal. It’s just stress, right?”
Just stress.
As if stress isn’t the quiet killer that carves its initials into your bones. As if surviving trauma, anxiety, depression, or whatever else brought this monster into your life isn’t real enough to deserve compassion. My seizures aren’t “fake” because they don’t show up on an EEG. They’re my body screaming what my mind can’t put into words. But nobody wants to hear that scream. They want a quick fix. A pill. A reason to look away.
And the worst part? The gaslighting. From yourself. “Am I doing this for attention? Why can’t I just control it?” Shut. Up. I’m so tired of the guilt that follows every episode. Tired of canceling plans, losing jobs, missing out on life because my nervous system decided today was a good day to play Russian roulette. Tired of people saying, “You don’t look sick,” as if chronic illness owes them aesthetics.
Oh, and let’s talk about “treatment.” Therapy helps, sure, but it’s not a magic wand. Unraveling years of trauma while your body keeps score? It’s like trying to defuse a bomb while blindfolded. And when a seizure hits in public? Cue the panicked stares, the 911 calls, the paramedics who don’t believe you when you croak, “It’s not epilepsy.” The shame is a living thing.
I’m not asking for pity. I’m asking for people to stop conflating “psychogenic” with “not real.” My seizures are real. The exhaustion is real. The fear is real. This isn’t a performance—it’s a prison.
To anyone else trapped in this invisible storm: I see you. I believe you. Your pain is valid, even when the world refuses to map it. We’re not broken. We’re survivors. And someday, the world will catch up.
Until then? Let’s rage, cry, and hold onto each other. Because sometimes that’s all we’ve got. ______

ERP: The Unlikely Hero for BDD Recovery (and Why It Works)" Okay, so hear me out. If you’re living with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), you know the drill: the mirror is your frenemy, your brain is a broken record of "what ifs," and every reflection feels like a personal attack. But what if I told you there’s a way to break free from this cycle? Enter ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention)—your new bestie in the fight against BDD.
So What is ERP? ERP is a type of therapy originally designed for OCD, but guess what? It’s chef’s kiss for BDD too. The idea is simple but terrifying at first: face your fears without doing the thing that makes you feel "safe."
For BDD, that means:
Exposure: Stop avoiding mirrors, photos, or social situations that trigger your BDD thoughts.
Response Prevention: Resist the urge to check, fix, or seek reassurance about your appearance.
Why ERP Works for BDD
It Breaks the Cycle: BDD thrives on avoidance and compulsions (like checking mirrors or asking, "Do I look okay?"). ERP interrupts this loop by teaching your brain that the anxiety will pass without those behaviors.
It Reduces the Power of Triggers: The more you avoid something, the scarier it becomes. ERP helps you confront your fears head-on, so they lose their grip over time.
It Builds Confidence: Every time you resist a compulsion, you’re basically telling your brain, "I got this." And spoiler: You do got this.
How to Start ERP for BDD
Make a Fear Ladder: List your BDD triggers from least to most scary. Maybe it’s glancing at a mirror for 10 seconds, then posting a selfie, then going out without makeup.
Start Small: Pick the easiest item on your ladder and face it without giving in to compulsions. Yes, it’ll feel awful at first. But like a muscle, it gets stronger with practice.
Celebrate the Wins: Did you resist checking your reflection for an hour? That’s a win. Did you leave the house without fixing your hair? That’s a win. Celebrate every step, no matter how small.
A Pep Talk for You I know ERP sounds scary. Like, really scary. But here’s the thing: You’re already living with the pain of BDD every day. ERP is about trading that pain for growth. It’s about reclaiming your life from the mirror and the "what ifs."
You are more than your reflection. You are more than your BDD. And with ERP, you can start to see that too.
TL;DR: ERP = Facing your BDD fears without giving in to compulsions. It’s hard, but it works. . 💪✨ ______ The best tool that simplifies gradual exposure therapy for you and puts it in an applied format.
