I wanted to look up what kind of dogs the vikings had in order to make a historically accurate shitpost meme, but while googling "viking dog", figuring I'd find pictures of some kind of big cool war dogs or dogs used for hunting moose and bear, but instead I found this
the noble vallhund
herder of cows and biter of ankles
This is literally a viking corgi.
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi developed starting roughly 1,000 years ago from a mix of the 3,000yo breed that was the historical Cardigan Welsh Corgi (first brought to Wales with Celtic groups emigrating from continental Europe), and Spitz type dogs that were brought in with the Viking raids 1,000 years ago.
Corgis are a mix of Viking and Celt, and that's neat. The vallhund is literally very close family to at least the Pembroke corgi.
There are a number of Scandinavian dog breeds that might be also associated with Vikings, most of which are spitzen. The Norrbottenspetz, Karelian Bear Dog, Finnish Lapphund, Icelandic Shepherd, Finnish Spitz, etc.
Special additional shout out for the Norwegian Lundehund, which was developed to hunt puffins. (Lunde means puffin). They look like a generic medium dog at first.
Except they have secret weapons just for clambering over rocks to get puffins. They have six fully-formed and muscled toes per foot, as well as extreme range of motion in their joints.
And there's your lesson in weird Viking dogs.

A major mood any time I try to do something
I worked a cash register in a crappy grocery store on Friday the 13th, the day the schools got word that they were going remote because of the virus.
There were horrible people. I don’t need to go into details because we’ve all heard them or read about them or experienced them firsthand.
But most people were just scared and anxious and trying to take care of their families in spite of bad local and state and national leadership and terrible messaging and limited personal resources. They were intense, but understandably so.
My bosses weren’t great, not on any level, from CEO to shift managers, but that’s not news, most of us have been exploited and abused in our jobs before and during Covid.
We weren’t allowed to wear masks because the store thought it would freak out the customers. Some people quit on the spot, but precious few because it’s not the kind of job you work if you have a ton of options. A woman came through my line and she was wearing a cloth mask with a pretty botanical print. I complimented the design and we bonded over love of fabrics and crafts. She asked about the store mask situation, I explained store policy, she shook her head, left with her groceries, and I kept working the endless line. She was back four hours later with a mask for me. She’d gone home, put away her perishables, sat down at her sewing machine, made a mask for a stranger, and then gone back out into crazy traffic and crowds, just to find me and give it to me. She gave it to me in front of the floor manager, and explained to the manager that she was worried about the employees, and my boss had to let me wear it (out of a weird mental loophole of ‘customer is always right’ even though no other employees were allowed to wear one that day and for a few weeks afterward, which sounds insane, but it’s true).
Another woman had come through with a ton of cheese, really cool fancy stuff. I’m in the cheese fandom so we had a good time chatting. She left with her groceries and I kept working the line. About an hour later, she was back in my line again with more fancy cheeses. I rang her up, bagged her food, handed it to her, and she handed the bag to me and said “This is yours, I’m grateful for all the essential workers but I don’t know how to tell you guys or keep you safe, so I’m just doing this.” She’d put her groceries in her car, gone back into a madhouse, picked out cheese for an anonymous cashier, and WAITED IN LINE FOR AN HOUR so she could give it to me personally.
Toward the end of day, after credit card machines had gone down five times in as many hours (do you know what it’s like a for an entire grocery store to go cash-only for overlong periods of time on March 13 with a building full of scared customers? Do you know how funny or charming or lighthearted you have to be with that many intense people on the verge of freaking out? Sometimes being a cashier is like being a goddamm standup comedienne or therapist or surrogate mom I swear). Anyway, a guy came in toward the very end of my overtime and the card reader went down again and this customer didn’t freak out. He started SINGING. He stood there and sang to me until the computers came back online. I’ll never forget him or his sweet voice or that moment in time, ever.
I know things are bleak right now. I know they’re going to get worse. But I see acts of bravery and kindness all day, every day. Every. Day. People are channeling their despair into personal outreach that doesn’t get witnessed by many people because it’s usually one-on-one type stuff. I do a ton of climate & political stuff, as well as all my odd jobs, so I see a lot of different demographics in a lot of different situations, all of them stressful, and yes, there are sociopathic assholes in all of those settings, but there are ALWAYS always people being good and brave and looking for ways to connect or care for or support other people in a myriad of ways.
I don’t believe in very many things at this age but I will go to my grave defending the goodness of humanity. We may be isolated, we may be headfucked and heartbroken, but we are still fighting the good fight. That’s as real as all the bad stuff.
we should make a rainbow made up of website colors. i want tumblr blue and deviantart green to be featured on it

im having feelings about the uffington white horse again
so essentially there’s this cool horse drawn into the hills in england made out of chalk and it’s like 3,000 years old.
people carved trenches 3,000 years ago and filled them with chalk in the shape of a horse but what’s interesting is that if you fail to maintain the horse by adding new chalk regularly, it will disappear. for 3,000 years, we’ve been filling in chalk in this horse so it doesn’t disappear.
we’ll never know what the purpose of the horse was originally. we’ll never know if it had ritual or spiritual significance or if it was just art. but we do know that people maintained it then, and, even though the meaning of the horse has long been lost to time, we continue to maintain it now.
the people who made this horse are long dead, but they live through us still, don’t you think?
She’s a wonderful contribution to humanity!

the thing that I think just blows me away about the cruella movie (and what blew me away when I heard they were even making one) is that it is utterly impossible to make her sympathetic gracefully. like, her original motivations were at least understandable, but fundamentally impossible to sympathize with.
rich woman wants a coat that will make a statement. dalmatians have striking and unique coats. adult dog coats are too coarse, puppies have soft coats. therefore, puppies are best choice to make coat out of. tries to buy puppies from acquaintance. gets refused. time for petty revenge.
boom, easy. there's the entirety of cruella's character, and there's nothing wrong with that. unfortunately for all of us, Disney doesn't agree.
Cruella (the movie) is clearly trying to follow in the footsteps of Maleficent's success, but the inherent problem is that cruella de vil lacks the same malleability of character. maleficent had a lot of unknowns about her motivations, primarily "what happened to make her hold a grudge?", which is a GREAT start to a story.
cruella never had that question. cruella never needed to ask that question. she wanted a coat, and had no regard for animal welfare. there's no inquiry there, there's no mystery. "Oh what made her not care about animals?" unfortunate news flash, a lot of people don't actually care about animal welfare to begin with. also im pretty sure way back in the 60s when the original movie came out, they weren't even sure dogs could feel pain. so really, Roger and Anita were the weirdos here.
so with all of that rattling in my skull, the fact that they made cruella's backstory revolve around her mother being assassinated by dogs is just so unnecessary. also how do you have a protracted chase without anyone intervening? how do you miss a bunch of snarling, barking dogs dashing across the yard and just stand there? there's so much genuinely bad writing, and I am just confused as to why
there are much better candidates to make the next Maleficent. Ursula would be interesting, because there isn't actually a whole lot of backstory other than "She's a horrible witch with a grudge against the regent," which is literally the identical starting point as maleficent. plus, merfolk are in vogue again.
Captain Hook is an immediate smash hit, because his backstory is already there, and you can build up this huge tragedy of him being a lost boy who got too old, and escaped Peter Pan trying to kill him and spent his life rescuing other lost boys before they could also be murdered.
hell, I'd even rather watch a movie about Jafar, because I would love to watch a movie about a bright-eyed and eager advisor becoming increasingly jaded and angry at his boss' childish antics and seeming complete disregard for the wellbeing of his subjects and slowly having it consume him. which is a characterization I totally pulled out of my ass but once again, jafar totally lacks a backstory so I get to do as I please.
wow, three better movies, and they required less thought than trying to figure out how to make a dog killer sympathetic.
#ok but also#focusing on the Dalmatian angle of cruella was the wrong way to go#dalmations specifically never should’ve even been a major part. not even dogs really#it should’ve been about the fashion industry. how her obsession with fashion and wealth and marketing herself drove her down the path of#becoming so ruthless and obsessed that she would do anything. including murdering a bunch of puppies just for a coat#that would make a statement and get her fame.#like if they HAD to do cruella. it should’ve been about that. someone going so far for wealth and power that they lose all humanity rather#than just a generic ‘traumatic event made her evil’

Breaking: TikTok is better bc it’s more hostile towards humanity
The lack of video content is what kept us here... I thought we all agree that the best feature of this hellhole was and always will be anonymity.
Tumblr's not asking for my phone number. It's not going through my contacts to try and connect me with my fucking colleagues. I can come here and talk about whatever I want without anyone ever seeing my face or hearing my voice. I don't have to censor myself and hide my interests or enthusiasm out of fear of consequences it might have in my real life.
I think the biggest misunderstanding they have of Tumblr is that they think of it as a social media platform when in actuality it's a blogging platform with social features.
