jim is just too cute
nathan foad should win an award for managing to be the gayest character in a show centered around an mlm romance. the kiss scene has the same amount of gay energy as two seconds of lucius just standing there
for example:
Since I am also one of those people who want to recreate the gorgeous fuschia robe from OFMD to sulk at home in style, I’ve gathered some references from the show that might help both cosplayers and artists (and those who just want to own the robe like me).
The robe is based on 17th-18th century men’s nightgown (or banyan) that was inspired by kimonos. According to one tutorial I found online you need approx. 3&½ yards of fabric but don’t quote me on that (probably better to use more for more flair).
(click on the image for full resolution)
I’ve also found two stores where the outer velvet fabric is available: here and here. (thank you to @MushroomHastur on twitter for finding these)
From what I’ve googled the robe would historically be just one layer of cotton/linen/silk but Stede’s robe has (what I assume to be) silk lining on the inside.
If you find this helpful in creating something, be it art or sewing, please tag me! I’d love to see it!
UPDATE: adding some gifs for people who also need moving references (and because I’m currently obsessed with this shit)
Update 2 because I’ve reblogged this version of the og post without it: adding link to an IG post by someone from the costuming department that I found through tumblr user sisterfrnkly.
THINGS I HAVE LEARNED ABOUT THIS ROBE IN THE LAST 12 HOURS
Stede is a better reference model, since Ed keeps clutching the garment to his body and his long hair gets in the way. I have nearly every freeze frame of ep 8 saved in my computer now
This thing is 100% velvet and silk only and therefore I have SO MUCH PRACTICE MUSLIN
The back panel is actually two panels seamed down the center. Probably because the wardrobe department had limited velvet and had to make it stretch.
I haven’t figured out if there is a flare in the cut but after experimenting I’m leaning towards ‘no’
There’s a thin red piping around the collar
The lining is one panel in the back. The wardrobe department put a box pleat in it to account for the material difference
Adding some of those blurry back scenes (why did you do this to us guys?) for more reference. Someone who understands pattern drafting please help me out here (if you can see anything that is).
It looks to me like there might be an inverted box pleat that starts flaring somewhere around the shoulder blades? Or am I just seeing things?
Bonus: feral Edward - because it’s funny and because you can see the cut of the sleeve here
Hi Friend!
I’m working to put together a useable pattern–part of my issue is that i’m rebuilding the design for someone with hips and boobs and narrower shoulders. The more I research this, the more i’m convinced there’s no flare in the body, since it took inspiration from kimonos and banyans.
I’m also throwing out about 70% of what I know about clothes construction because this thing is velvet, and sane rules don’t apply to velvet.
Back Panel:
I too, thought there may be an inverted box pleat in the back of the self fabric. Now, though, I’m on the fence because:
-I’ve never come across a pleat that sits on a vertical seam. I will fully admit, however, that I am a hobbyist. If you can pleat on a vertical seam, it may be out of my skill range.
-a box pleat/inverted box pleat would need a horizontal seam to anchor it and I can’t find any horizontal seam in the self fabric lower than the collar. If there is a pleat, it’s would be between the shoulder blades. The fabric from the collar to the shoulder blades is flat in the screen shots I can find.
-a pleat would require extra ironing, which is death for velvet.
(If someone knows better, please feel free to shout out!)
Box Pleat in the lining:
This part appears all one panel, with the box pleat anchored to the top seam. I don’t see a seam down the middle from this angle, though the collar was doing something funky that got my attention.
Collar:
So I’m doing some wild mass guessing on the collar, and am narrowing it down. Right now, I think it’s a 7″ strip folded over into a 3″ band (3.5″ with seam allowance). A bit like a kimono collar, but in two separate pieces attached at the back to drape down. It’s probably two pieces to to keep the nap of the velvet all running in the right direction. I’m also assuming it’s got sewn-in interfacing to help it keep structure.
(Blurry as hell–whyyyy–but the best evidence I have of a seam in the back collar)
And here’s the clearest screenshots I have of the red piping:
The collar seems to go down to about hip-level, even with the sleeves. I’m assuming it’s attached with with a pretty straight-forward stitch-the-ditch technique once the front, back, and sleeves have been constructed.
Sleeves:
I think you’re right about the sleeves–they seem like straight up kimono sleeves, cut in the men’s fashion with the backs sewn up as well as the front and bottom. That honestly makes them one of the easiest parts of this thing, since there’s patterns out there to utilize.
I’m not the best patterner but i’m trying to get something semi-accurate on paper to help make them.
So anyway…. After my friend pointed it out and I then watched hours of kimono sewing tutorials I came to the conclusion that this is probably just a basic kimono/nagajubann pattern with some minor adjustments.
The only adjustments appear to be the tassels, the lining (which, as has been pointed out already, has a box pleat at the neckline), the red piping around the collar and the fact that the body of the robe was made out of 4 panels.
Mystery solved people (well, mostly me because I wasn’t able to get it out of my head), let’s get to sewing.
Edit: adding some replies from Hannah Greene from her IG post featuring the robe
Hi this blog has been so helpful, but I was hoping to ask if you have any reference photos of the back of the purple suit that Ed wears? And maybe the waistcoat?
Unfortunately, we don't have any behind the scenes photos of the back of the suit. In the episode itself, we only get one shot where we can see the direct back of it, but the scene is in shadow. I've attempted to brighten it up and color correct it:
We do get some sideways shots where we get some hints of the back, and those shots may actually be more useful:
As for the waistcoat, it appears to be a solid color - indigo. With purpleish-brown buttons. I've zoomed in on the colors, as well as color-dropped them for better visualization.
I hope this helps! Since i'm already here, i'm going to add some more references of the outfit.

I'm looking for this fabric for Stede's waistcoat that he wears to the party in episode 5.
It's a blue and silver checkered print and apparently non existent...

In most fan subs Arthur's lines were wrong. It's fun and add to the characters that they've given them all different accents. But it also makes it difficult to hear what they're saying, that and the problems they have with audio mixing in this film...
He says "mate"...
My dad and I got into a conversation about what a magic duel between Schmendrick the Magician and Rincewind the Wizzard would look like. And we agreed that it’ll probably be the first wizard duel in history to be settled over rock-paper-scissors.
