Probably my all-time favourite type of fic is in-universe document type fics. Basically fics which have the framing devic/writing style of an In-universe document, history or academic work with an insane attention to detail. Like a lot of my all-time favourite fics are told like academic works or in-universe histories where stuff like military strategy and technology of the times/setting, economics, culture and norms are explored.

My favourite fic of all time is the Decline and Fall of the Jedi Order which is basically an In-universe history covering the entire period of the Knights of The Old Republic Games as an academic work while examining the Star Wars galaxy and the struggle between Jedi and Sith from a historically materialist perspective instead of the mystical one of the films. It's 158 thousand words and 55 chapters but it's legitimately book tier.

BUT It's so frustrating trying to find fics like this because AO3 Tagging is kinda ass at locating fics like this. Like you type in Academic and you get a trillion Harry Potter fics or Historical and you just get Historical AUs. Like it's in that niche where it's insanely good but too hyperspecific for AO3 Tagging which is weird because AO3 Tagging is insanely good.

I don‘t know if Zootopia-fics are up your alley, but there is this great fanfic named Burrow that is styled like a documentary.

The fic is about a journalist interviewing several mammals/people about the collapse of a mega-burrow(giant underground rabbit city), and the rescue of those trapped in it.

Doctor Robotnik is a fun one to throw into those "what would [media chadracter X] do with [cursed artifact Y]" hypotheticals because the answer is always "misunderstand or disregard its intended purpose and use it to power a giant evil robot". The One Ring, the Death Note, the Necronomicon – it doesn't matter. Evil robot. The question isn't what he'd do with it, but how it's going to go horribly wrong.
