today’s funky frog of the day is: ranitomeya fantastica! commonly known as the red-headed poison frog, they are endemic to peru, specifically the san martín and loreto regions. their natural habitats are wet forests, although they cannot survive unless phytotelmata, water-filled cavities in plants, are present. they use these cavities to breed during mating season, when the females will lay 2 to 6 eggs that the males will then protect. they are about an inch long, and males have a singular vocal sac instead of the usual pair. sadly, they are threatened by habitat loss and collection for pet trade. they can live up to 10 years in captivity, although lifespans of 5 to 8 years are more common, especially in the wild.
