Red Rising: Living after Eurydice

Red Rising is a story about what Orpheus does after he comes back from the Underworld empty handed. I had this thought as I was reading the second book in the series, Golden Son, and around the same time I got to see Hadestown live, so that's where this really comes from, and I'll do my best to explain it. Obviously Pierce Brown makes a lot of references to the Iliad and other myths throughout the series and so that got me thinking that the beginning of book 1 could be read as a retelling of the Orpheus/Eurydice story, with the rest of the first trilogy being what happens after Orpheus returns to mortality empty handed. Darrow and Eo as Orpheus and Eurydice Our Eurydice, Eo is taken to an early grave, and Darrow, our Orpheus, goes after her. He illegally buries her condemning himself to death, in order to give her dignity in death. He seals his fate following her to the Vale, to the Underworld, but it is all for naught. He is saved, he escapes the underworld, and now must figure out how to live without her.

After Eo In Hadestown, Orpheus can "make you see what the world could be, in spite of the way that it is." In Red Rising though, it is our Eurydice, Eo, that dreams of a better world. Red Rising is the story of how our Orpheus, Darrow, goes about fulfilling the dream of his lost love and learning to live and love again. The whole trilogy, but especially the first book is spent with Darrow grappling with what it means to become the man that Eo knew he could be. It is the story of an Orpheus who fights to create a world where his Eurydice wouldn't need to die. He failed and there's nothing he can do to bring her back, but he can make the world a place where she would have lived, and the whole trilogy is Darrow figuring out how to go on without her. She was enough for him to be happy, but she had bigger dreams than just him, and so he had to figure out how to make those dreams a reality.

I hear you. but I actually really super love being an omnivorous persistence hunting primate with a stomach capable of dissolving many literal poisons and the ability to smell geosmin (released in the soil after it rains) at five parts per trillion. I super enjoy being a bipedal terrifyingly agile mammal with some of the most efficient sweat glands in the animal kingdom. sometimes someone online makes a joke that's based on gender essentialism about men and women and they don't intend to further gender essentialism its just the lens they view the whole world through and it imposes binarism on the world. sometimes these same people lazily tack on a third part to the joke involving a generalization about nonbinary people, reducing them to a third gender rather than an expanse of identities and they genuinely think they are being progressive. you cant point this out to them or they reblog a screenshot of your reply and tag it #that one friend who's too woke #god forbid I make a joke #what do YOU want my joke that enforces and presupposes a strict binarism and allows for only one variety of deviation to say. and you know what I don't know I don't know what I want. I want peace on earth. I want twenty dollars. I want a hamburger and a Pepsi I want a body that doesn't hate itself a brain that doesn't want to destroy itself. I was given a mind that can't control itself. I was given a ship that can't steer itself. and what about a vacation? I love the different cast every movie concept, I love Benoit Blanc and his ridiculous accent, I love how they always come out around christmas for some reason, I love how original they are, I love a murder mystery. give me 14 of these films and I will eat them up
