Mercy Lena Brown was an American teenager who lived during the vampire panic in New England. She was born 1873 in Exeter, Rhode Island and lived with her family. Her mother, Mary Eliza Brown, and oldest sister, Mary Olive, both had just died from consumption (tuberculosis), and Mercy and her brother, Edwin had both contracted it.
It is important to note that consumption was a very sexy disease, popularized by Edgar Allan Poe and was considered a fantastic way to die. Sufferers would grow pale and thin, with red lips and waste away. Classic vampire shit. Death also causes corpses to appear slightly bloated, and often can cause red/dark fluid leaking out of orifices, particularly the mouth and nose. Even more classic vampire shit.
Mercy died at age 19 of the disease, in January 1892 (the same year Ford made his first car for reference). Since she died in winter, the ground was too frozen to bury her, so she was stored in a crypt at a nearby church/cemetery until the spring thaw came.
Her brother was still suffering from the disease, and the common belief was that a dead family member was sucking their life force vampirically. A vampire hunter/doctor dude from Peace Dale RI came to George Brown, her father, and advised him to dig up and check out his family member's graves. He dug up both his wife and first daughter's graves and found normal levels of decomposition (not a vampire). He removed from crypt/dug up Mercy (it's unclear) and dissected her. Since she was exhumed in March, and was buried in January, the New England weather had essentially frozen her, so there was still blood in her heart, which was a telltale sign of vampirism. With the doctor/vampire expert's (who is an ancestor of a friend. btw) help, George Brown removed and burned Mercy's heart and liver on a nearby rock and turned the ashes into a tonic. The tonic was supposed to cure Edwin of consumption and "kill" Mercy. Unsurprisingly, the tonic did not work and Edwin died anyway.
Mercy Brown is one of the most documented "vampire" cases in New England, and it was heavily reported on by the Providence Journal. It is also said to have inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula and remains an important part of Rhode Island history to this day. Although Mercy Brown wasn't a real vampire, she is in my heart and I am her #1 fan and supporter. (photos under cut)

Rhode island actually has one of the best pride parades in America, Providence pride. It has a night parade and is recognized as one of the top 10 pride celebrations in America. We also have a lot of LGBTQ+ protections in place and the Womxn Project was founded here.
