something i think isn't explored enough in the hail mary fandom is that while yes, humans are biologically a weird mess consisting of good enoughts that's just not efficient at all, the reason we're like is because of mutations that all happened because of a bunch of random environmental factors and our biology trying really hard to keep us alive in those situations.
and since that's kinda the natural way for biological things to form it wouldn't be weird if eridians also evolved like that. which means they're most likely also weirdly inefficient in a lot of things.
so i imagine after getting to erid, after hearing about how "stupid leaky space blobs badly designed" grace finds out eridians are in fact also, stupid pointy badly designed space rocks.
#I have SO many headcanons in the works#I believe some eridans would have eating problems - difficulty opening or closing their ventral seal could be deadly without intervention#methinks egg fusion is a holdover from parasitic egg laying practices. Have your egg steal some other animals egg nutrients.#until there came a time when host eggs grew too powerful and only eggs that were laid with another eridian survived anymore#thusly Eridian eggs are technically immune to each other. And modern Eridians are born with certain nutrient deficiencies that used to be#handled by said ancient parasitism. Newborns need to play a lot of catch up (which helped contribute to social development.#our collective babies are HUNGRY and they are hungry for this extremely specific thing we now need urgently! We can only pull this off#if we work together! With the power of friendship!!)#I believe Eridians are not immune to concussion. Gotta be careful not to literally break your brain! It could cut up your insides!#Some Eridian worker cells origanate from COMPLETELY unrelated animals. ancient cross contamination becomes modern body plan.#so there are a few cells and interior structures that are literally useless and belong to different creatures entirely#and they still have to feed it or the intrusive cells will starve out the rest. Cant remove them either or an essential system will break!#gotta love billions of years of randomized trial and error!
dont hide this in the tags!! also im adopting all of it @treesarealsogreen also fun fact from the eridian docx the ammonia in their atmosphere is technically poisonous to them and kills their cells is they keep their mouth/seam open for too long, think about how we get sunburn/skin cancer if we stay in the sun too much lmao
anyone have that picture with the 100 pool toy baltos. Its like a modern terracotta army

Some wise words from the masterminds behind undertale and deltarune
i'm the guy who writes the books that the protagonist in supernatural horror movies frantically reads somewhere in act ii. job's pretty easy. lot of "legends of vampires have recurred all throughout human history" and "demonologists agree that the quickest way to un-summon a demon is to trap it in a cursed object". no citations of course; they don't pay me citation money. i had to learn html back in the early aughts when everyone started seeking their supernatural info on websites they found via top search engines like FINDLER and WEBSIGHT but that's died down now which is great because i didn't have it in me to pick up css. currently working on a new book about horses that are evil. it's called HORSES THAT ARE EVIL in all caps so the protagonist can find it quickly to yank off the library shelf. it will be published 35 years ago.
the author’s thinly veiled nothing #notwriting #straightupnotwritingit
This whole chapter was so pretty!
they're saying spending 2 hours in the word doc changing words slightly to be more specific and evocative and moving endless commas around is one of the most noble and respected things that you can do
“The continual cracking of your feet on the road makes a certain quantity of road come up into you. When a man dies they say he returns to clay but too much walking fills you up with clay far sooner (or buries bits of you along the road) and brings your death half-way to meet you. It is not easy to know what is the best way to move yourself from one place to another.”
— Flann O'Brien, The Third Policeman
there's so many fun rabbit holes to go down when you try to adjust your word choice in writing to be applicable to the setting because at first it starts by some surface level "this character shouldn't say 'damn' because there's no real concept of damnation in this world" and ends with you debating whether a character can refer to a dress as 'navy' when referring to a dark blue as navy has roots in the 18th century British naval uniforms but then it starts to spiral out of control when you think about how none of these characters are actually speaking/thinking in English and everything is already being translated for the reader's benefit and there are probably loads of linguistic and historical subtleties that wouldn't be properly conveyed just because of a change in language and i'm probably overthinking this aren't i? either that or i need to have a seance with JRR Tolkien to discuss some things.
