Painting Weather & Atmosphere 🎨💨 I actually wanted to post my inktober from today but It got dark here in England much earlier than I thought and I couldn’t take a decent pic without that natural light, so I’ll do that and upload in the morning. This is one of two colour paintings as part of my latest assignment work, focusing on painting weather and atmosphere. Neither paintings are rendered with a huge amount of detail, but pushed enough to hopefully read well and look high enough quality to be believable. The next one I’ll post tomorrow or the next day, which is another night scene but with rain this time. A Return To Oil Painting 🎨 When and where was the last time you camped outdoors and woke up for sunrise? 🌅 2.5 years ago on the Gold Coast, Australia was the last time I painted with oils when I took part in the #stradaeaselchallenge . I can’t believe how quickly that time has flown by, it seems much more like 6-12 months ago. Anyway, I’m back with the oils as part of my practice. To kick-start I decided to paint this bird I saw when I woke up one morning at sunrise in El Chaltén, Argentina’s Patagonia. I climbed out of my tent and walked towards the lake moments before the sun hit the mountains. This little bird was a few feet away from me, singing in the trees, the other birds close by would sing back, it continued on for the sunrise which was pretty incredible. Painted “alla prima” on board. 'North Laine Wanderer' 🔎☀️ A quick digital painting study of an older man who I saw walking around the popular and busy North Laine streets, the place I grew up in, in Brighton, England. I imagined this man to have once worked out at sea on boats and ships, or as a fisherman standing on the shore. There's plenty of interesting characters to draw inspiration from around here. 'Perilous Path' 🗻🌌 Not so long ago I travelled across the stunning northern and southern landscapes of Argentina and Chile. Finally I went on an adventure to Patagonia, a place I dreamt of visiting for years. I spent days hiking through all weather conditions and landscapes, carrying my home, food and equipment everywhere I went, camping out in the open exposed to the elements under the stars, and nestled inside deep forests. Part of this journey brought me to Torres Del Paine, part of Chile's Patagonia, a place I will never forget. 💫 Sometimes I still feel like I have to pinch myself when I wake up. This is my digital painting of part of the mountainscape I was looking at at the end of the first day, just after I had pitched my tent, had a quick shower and had dinner on my portable gas stove. I imagined it to be a dangerous mountain to climb, the silhouette of the mountain was sharp and jagged, and there was no sign of life from my pov. I added some details to the painting which wasn't in the original scene I was standing looking at... 'Painting The Windmill' 🎨 From the West Coast of LA, to the South East Coast of England. Once again I took the opportunity to sketch outdoors, painting both coasts within days of each other. 🌊 This time I only had to travel a short ride away from where I live in central Brighton. This is the Windmill which is a little further east along the coast, just outside the villages Roedean and Rottingdean. I got off the bus and walked up past the windmill and found a place to sit in the grass. I thought I was free of distractions when just as I started to sketch everything in, a photographer and a model turned up for a shoot, right in my line of vision. ‘The Chore of The Crowds’ 🇵🇪 It was another work day for the Peruvian local on top of rainbow mountain. Draped in the brightest of colours, with her decorated lama parked closed by, poised for all the onslaught of selfies from the oncoming crowds from around the world. The tourists would expect to meet a wide grin and welcoming eyes, but today her face told a different story. Today she just wasn’t feeling it, not up for having another selfie stick shoved in her face, not up for the lack of consideration from many of the gormless holidayers, or having her animal companion obsessed over through the lens of a smart phone instead of from direct human sight. She just sat there staring off into the landscape, and couldn’t care less. 'The Koala & Leopard' 🐨🐆 This is my ink illustration from my A4 sketchbook I made for my friend Aaron, who put me up in his excellent apartment complex in DTLA, California which allowed me to come and visit the city from England for the Lightbox Expo. I asked Aaron what his 3 favourite animals were, thinking about creating some original art for him, and the first two aninals were the Koala and Leopard. Santa Monica Plein Air Sketch 🎨 After spending an amazing weekend meeting so many new artists, many of the pros who really inspire me, getting a number of portfolio reviews and of course learning from some of the very best artists in Illustration, fine art, film, animation and games from around the world, I decided to head to the coast to relax for a few hours and get out in nature.The last time I was here was in 2013. Window Into The Caribbean 🐠🌴 If you were to visit a country in the Caribbean, where would you like to go? On my second to last stop in Colombia I visited the Caribbean island San Andrés, where I stayed with a Caribbean run family hostel. Historically the island had been tied to the U.K, and most people speak pretty good English, mixed with a blend of their own language and with a local(ish) Jamaican sounding accent. Lovely island and the people are friendly, laid back, funny and curious, just a shame about the alcohol abuse by many of the islanders throughout the day. I had a lot of fun joking with the head (mum) of the house and the rest of the family. I had to talk and paint in the hostel as the kids were far too curious about what I was doing. During my stay I completed a few plein air sketches, was up for sunrise most days and would run along the beach in the mornings, and then cool down in the shallow part of the sea with some more locals before going to get breakfast. One evening I ran around the island for about 45 minutes with the locals. Me and one other going all the way ahead of the group to the finish line with about 15 minutes to spare before everyone else arrived.
