The way people are acting about Mangione's guilty plea is pissing me off. Again, much of the evidence they had against Mangione was seriously flawed or capable of being planted. Much of it should have been inadmissable. This is something we shouldn't cede because guilt needs to be proven beyond reasonable doubt in court. They did not do that. Many reasonable doubts remained, particularly for police forces we know have a history of fabricating evidence. Further, the strategy of the state is to pressure defendants into putting in a guilty plea on some kind of bargain. The reason Mangione did this is to get around the federal death penalty. Every day, people in America plead guilty to crimes they didn't do, because the cost of being found guilty by trial is too severe, and they have been intimidated or coerced to compliance. We have reason to believe Mangione was physically tortured at the beginning of all this. The guy has been the target of years of media campaign. There's no way he would have gotten a fair trial. As soon as he was arrested, everyone just accepted it was him. He could have gotten the death penalty. This is the exact kind of circumstance where people plead guilty to shit they didn't do.

It is less about this specific case and more about the principle of the matter. Particularly in a case so high-profile, we need to scrutinize the case of the state as much as humanly possible. We need to maintain awareness of how the state operates, how it prosecutes, how it punishes. This same pattern has played out with unknowable quantities of other people being ground to paste in the machinery of the prison industrial complex. This is a conversation everyone in America needs to be having. These are maneuvers every American needs to be aware of, particularly as the police state kicks into higher gear than we've ever seen it before. We cannot trust state prosecution. You need to maintain your skepticism, not for this case, but for all the cases that are going to follow it. We all need to hang onto this together.

We all in Latam are mestizos of Indigenous cultures and black and brown people and whatever other category, and every time I see "recommendations" of how to survive being empoverisher by western capitalism, its a westerner (not just a yanki) eating our food bought in cans at cheap prices. Even the marginalised westerner have access to everything that is stolen every day from us while we die hearing them whine about why one does nothing to stop imperialism with their mouths full of my ancestral vegetables, fruits and grains, sitting in a place made with the wood covered in our blood, holding a phone made with our minerals and metals and lives.

But this is a truth that they will never accept bc they really think their lives are above ours and they can't and will never stop being an imperialists. That's why every time a global southerners speaks of this ALWAYS shows up marginalised ppl from all identities from the empire or wannabe to tell us to shut up.

Ppl here have told me to buy expensive ass vegan foods and canned food bc "is cheaper" and gave me a price in dollars when I asked about nutrition under western caused famine. I felt disgust bc the food named was my native foods, yet they can buy it bc they take it from me. Canned food is not accessible to survive a fucking famine. I can't even buy fucking potatoes nor have a safe place to put them. We created the fucking potatoes and where in all the territories.

That's the privilege and ignorance of the west.

That exact infuriating cadence that you read in New York Times articles, in the Atlantic Monthly, in the WaPo and all the other bourgeois rags where "everything is so complicated, and it's actually a lot more complicated than you think.." that has been around since the beginning. It is nothing new. So the next time you see some op-ed from Matt Yglesias or any of those other guys huffing their own farts about how "complicated" everything is, and how "unrealistic" a 30-hour work week is, remember that Marx was dealing with that exact class of "intellectuals" "explaining" how working 13 hours at age 10 was "vital" to the "moral fibre" of those poor kids.

a lot of folks on the anti-communist left fall into a sort of nihilistic despair at the state of things because they are unwilling to see the incredible advances in actual socialist projects as real, leaving an increasingly derelict capitalist structure as the only thing that exists in their perspective. which, in fairness, would also make me rather depressed! getting over the hurdle of accepting that socialism exists in real life does just totally ameliorate that, however.
