The final episode

So I have been thinking in the ending since seeing the movie.

And the ending isn’t satisfying.

But I have been thinking about it since I saw it. I have been moved by it. The show wasn’t setting out to satisfy the audience, it set out to tell us a story. It set out to make us feel.

And I am left mulling over that sorry still. So the show wasn’t setting good. I mean I loved every other episode blatantly. Not a miss in there. And nothing objectionable happened in the ending. It just wasn’t a theatrical experience.

Personally, I think that the beach episode and the keysmash episode should have been the episodes to go to the theater because they are more traditional theatrical. Not that I regret my experience. I went out to enjoy myself and see others from the same fandom, and I got that. And to see Cain’s musical number on the big screen.

The show was good. The show was moving. The show was thought provoking. Including the ending.

I know I will continue mulling over how it ended, and that was the point. I just won’t be satisfied, and who is actually traditionally satisfied at a bitter sweet end?

Once the episode drops on YouTube I will probably rewatch the series one final time with the ending in minds, and feel what you can only feel in hindsight. And I will enjoy it.

Hey amazing digital circus fans!

My sister saw some of the final episode over my shoulder, and highly recommends Fruits Basket the anime to us if we haven’t seen it. She says we will love/hate Kyo. She also says it has many melodramatic conversations.

So don’t mourn The Amazing Digital Circus too much. lol.

Vent post!!!!!!!

Our indoor cat got out over two weeks ago. We have seen her a few times. I have tried traps. Just sitting by her usual hiding spot. Food. Wet food (she never liked it). Treats. Toys. Playing sounds she likes.

Still can’t get her.

I’m going crazy.

She is in most of my dreams. They center her returning or my catching her.

Or she is my first panicked thought as I wake.

I spend most of my day thinking about her.

I have cried twice.

And I hate my whole family right now.

For months she has been hanging out in the garage. My sister and I vocalized concerns she would get out and that we would lose her, given when we adopted her we were warned if she got out she would never find her way home.

Our parents told us we were crazy. She would never.

Then it was “ha ha, she just wants to sniff the flowers.”

Our brother went so far as to yell in my face that it was a stupid worry and she has never gone out before.

So we shut up.

My sister confided in me all the thoughts of revenge she had if the worst happened.

Each morning when my mom would return home I’d go to the garage just before hand to shoo the cat away from the garage door she always comes through .

But mom was early one day I was running behind. And our cat got out. I didn’t even know until lunch.

We were in denial, probably just hiding in the basement.

Then we saw her outside the first time.

My brother and I gave chase and failed to catch her. It was so dark. And we turned against each other.

Then we left out food.

Then I bought traps.

Then traps got complicated because everyone had competing concerns.

“The cat is too smart.”

“It could hurt her.”

“We could get rabies from the other animals.”

“Our cat could get rabies from the other animal’s poop.”

“The cost of our cat’s life is too great.”

Dad was gonna use the traps for that once we were done with them anyway.

Where to put the trap was a whole thing.

On and on.

And I feel like I am the only one not half assing. And that I’m not doing enough. And that it is doomed. Like I’m the only one haunted.

My sister isn’t lashing out. Just shutting down ideas and methods. All her ideas are too idealistic. She won’t come out to play with a toy! Or to me sitting nearby playing her favorite show!

I feel betrayed on our cat’s behalf that she hasn’t torn up the garden or something.

And we got to swallow our resentment at our family for letting this happen. For telling us we were crazy for the reasonable concern. Just to keep what little peace we can.

But I’m losing it.

I’m losing it.

I just spent my shower crying. And my extreme PMS isn’t helping anything.

I have never been this upset for this long. I’ve lost both grandparents and never did it hurt like this. Is it because she isn’t dead yet? Is it because this actually feels like it is within my power?

I just want my cat back.

I see her face a few days ago in her hiding spot and it was the only time I’ve been overjoyed in a long time.

I feel guilty for any joy or contentment unrelated to her.

And our parents keep trying to sell the narrative where she chose to leave, to be feral, that she is happy out there. But we know her and that isn’t her personality. She only eats one brand and flavor of treat for fucks sake! She is timid and shy! She is terrified!

I can’t tell my sister I’m mad that she isn’t grieving the same. That is unreasonable. And I can’t tell the rest of the family I blame them because we are stuck with them indefinitely given the state of the world. And I have no friends of my own. I have coworkers, but it would be oversharing to get into all of it, and my dad works with me so it would just cause drama.

So I decided to vent here because most of my family doesn’t have tumblr, and my sister is hardly on here.

Whenever we see Magnifico engaging with his subjects, he's always standing on some platform, towering them and making them focus their attention on him.

When he reaches almost full power, he visual rises above them all, practically untouchable.

After absorbing Star's power, he covers the night sky full of stars to prevent anyone to wish on them, ie seeking help from them.

While unintentional on the creators' part, this gives him a theater motif where he stands on a very high stage and wants to outshine the other stars.

Like stars that shine the brightest, they burn out the fastest. After his defeat and imprisonment in his own staff, he is visually below everyone, right down to their feet.

(A thing to note is his and Star's light and fire motif. Star's light is a comforting warmth while Magnifico's magic after he uses the book resembles flames, dangerous to anything, everyone and himself)

Somewhat related, while Magnifico is always on a platform whenever he engages with his subjects, Amaya is on the ground level when she helps her people. Visually, Magnifico is distancing himself from his own people while Amaya is standing along with them.

Amaya is a really underrated character. Some people say she could've been better as a villain, but I disagree, largely because majority of these people only care about her if she's a version of her that exists in their heads. And very few like myself appreciate her as she is because of her role as queen and Magnifico's wife.

Her character is heavily tied with Magnifico's, most of her scene involves around him. She informs Asha of things to do when she becomes his apprentice, like keeping his tea hot and listen to him when he speaks; she convinces him to not use the book when he gets paranoid over someone else other than him using magic; she sees that he created a staff out of dark magic, calling him out for doing so after he swore that he'll never do so; joining Asha's rebellion after seeing just how the man she loved became the thing he hated.

However, we also get to see brief moments of her that are independent of Magnifico. She was very supportive of Asha becoming his apprentice as she knows how kind and generous Asha is to her people, which are the things Rosas is built on. And in the end, we see just how the kind of ruler she is and the kind of king Magnifico claims he is or should have been, supportive of her people to pursue and achieving their dreams.

She and Magnifico are straight up foils of each other. Magnifico is the talker and she is the listener; Magnifico talks about himself and Amaya listens to others; Magnifico despite having the power to grant wishes doesn't use it while Amaya not having any magic helps people pursue them; Magnifico refuses to grant the harmless of wishes for selfish reasons, she helps two people achieve theirs out of the generosity of her heart.

Her story is also on the tragic side as even though Magnifico is not an abusive husband, he does have the characteristics of one. Threatening her when he suspects her of being against him and even turning on her when she calls him out. People don't seem to notice this, but Magnifico is a powerful sorcerer, he has the literal powers to do anything to someone if they were to get on his bad side.

Amaya's story is about a woman who supported a man she loved into building a community out of their shared desire to make it a place of kindness and generosity. Upon seeing him slowly becoming the things that are against what she and him built this community on, she does what she can to stir him back to his former self. And when that man went off the deep end, she has no choice but to cut him off and take charge of the community he founded and became the leader he was supposed to be alongside her.

Understanding King Magnifico

Spoilers

He is a villain. A great villain. An irredeemable villain.

We met him and he keeps his cool until after his song. His subject had stopped paying attention to him. He became, somewhat reasonably, annoyed that she hadn’t even been officially hired before asking a favor but maybe don’t have your kingdom structured to have that happen maybe. Then he, likely already looking for a reason to deny her, told her the wish was too dangerous. This plays into a bit earlier where they bonded over past loss. He clearly has some trauma from this, but the movie has no desire to justify him with this.

Confusing most audiences.

His first cruel act mirrors a greater moment of villainy later when he crushes her mother’s dream with his newly acquired dark power. At the first wish ceremony of the film he goes out of his way to crush both Asha and her grandpa’s hope because she dared challenge him.

This is a dick move. And his wife clearly follows him after to scold him for such a misuse of power.

She really had been the only thing keeping him off the deep end.

We see him triggered once again at the light of Star. Anything he doesn’t directly control freaks him out to the point of complete paranoid breakdown. He almost uses his cured book her, but his wife manages to calm him for now.

But as soon as more of his people start questioning him he spirals the rest of the way. His song ‘this is the thanks I get’ he is clearly trying to calm down by hyping himself up, and let me just say the storyboarding of the moment he sees the book and steps past the point of no return was excellent, so so smooth. Anyway. This fails and he descends into full on villainy.

We see his magic corrupted in the second wish ceremony where he clearly truly controls Simón to the point he snitches on the rest of his friends then.

The movie takes the hard stance that one act of such villainy is enough. He can’t be saved, no matter how much his queen wishes for it to be so. So much so that she puts herself and Dahlia in danger of the book themselves to search for a solution. But he has already used its power.

He cleverly bests the hero’s plan, and brutally takes Star and his power for his own, brutally throws Asha around, and locks down each of his individual subjects with his dark power. Then starts blasting at then when they still oppose him.

Once defeated he shows no remorse, only asking sympathy for himself and his terrible fate, but even his queen has lost the love she held for the man he once was or at least seemed to be. He is left in the dungeon to reflect for all eternity on what he has done, and whines like a brat at his comeuppance.

He was well written and amazingly entertaining. One of the highlights.

While I feel sorry for him, truly he was irredeemable, as he had no interest at any point in being better. Tragically he lost control on his quest for it. A cautionary tale.

A great return to form for classic Disney villains, while keeping a modern flare.
