Gay subtext in Lady Blue
Starsky & Hutch: Lady Blue
Season 1, Ep 10
Okay, can we talk about the fact that Hutch appears to be romancing Starsky in this ep where Starsky is mourning his dead ex-girlfriend?
I swear I’m not making this up.
As evidence, I present these two scenes:
1) The guys are in the morgue hallway and Starsky is feeling down. Hutch offers him coffee but Starsky waves it away. Then Hutch puts his hand over Starsky’s hand and says “Oh, Starsk” in THAT way. Starsky replies, “It’s alright” and puts his hand over Hutch’s. And then it looks like PMG starts to laugh just before the scene cuts, but I digress.
2) The tag. You know, the one where Hutch lights candles and cooks Starsky’s favorite meal that he got from his mother-in-law Starsky’s mom. CANDLES!
Now, an episode in which Starsky is mourning his dead ex-girlfriend doesn’t exactly seem like the best time for Hutch to try to seduce him, but that seems to be exactly what Hutch is doing. And it IS a good way to hide the gay subtext, because who would suspect it in this ep?
Now, you could argue that the hand-holding and “Oh, Starsk” is just Hutch being really supportive and that he has no romantic feelings whatsoever. Sure, that could be. The scene is totally gay, though, if I can be honest.
But if we put the lovey-dovey morgue scene together with the tag (or even just the tag by itself), you can most definitely see that Hutch is trying to romance his partner.
Let’s dissect the lovely tag, shall we?
Hutch has called Starsky’s mom to get his favorite recipe, cooks it and invites Starsky over for dinner, tries to get Starsky to look at the sunset (for which Starsky has zero interest), and sets a romantic candlelit table. Totally not gay, right? (I’m being sarcastic, btw, it’s totally gay). And he doesn’t just light some candles that are already on the table. He brings them over from near the window where he’s watching the sunset and then lights them.
But when Starsky inquires about the candles by asking “Who are the candles for? Expecting someone?,” Hutch answers “Yeah, that’s why we’re eating early,” while totally avoiding looking at his partner and trying to act nonchalant.
Starsky, for his part, seems disappointed by this (but in a non-romantic way, I think) and asks “What time am I leaving?” to which Hutch deflects by lifting the cover on the Paul Muni special. So he never answers the question. Because Starsky isn’t going to be leaving early.
Also, this is going slightly off-topic, but I have the same exact speckled-black roasting pan as Hutch. I find this very exciting because I have been a Hutch girl since I was a kid, and I’m not the one who bought the roasting pan, my hubby did.
Now, you might be thinking, what’s gay about Hutch having a girl over later and serving an early dinner to Starsky? And apparently he really WAS serving it early or Starsky would have pointed out that it wasn’t early. And the sun is just setting, although we don’t know what time of year it’s supposed to be. But the ep aired in mid-November and sunset in Los Angeles Bay City would have been around 4:45pm, so that IS pretty early to eat dinner.
So does that mean there really was a girl coming over later for a booty call with Hutch? NO! IT DOES NOT MEAN THAT! It means that Hutch was embarrassed that Starsky didn’t pick up on his cues and so he made up the story about the girl. Because why the F would Hutch be lighting candles during his dinner with Starsky if he was planning on having a romantic time with a girl LATER THAT EVENING? The candles would be burned out by then and I doubt he was planning on having a second dinner with this fictional girlfriend or that he and the girl would be anywhere near the kitchen table. The candles are totally for Starsky.
Confused? Still wondering why Hutch serves dinner early, if there is no girl coming over later?
Did you figure it out yet? No? Then scroll down for the answer…….
……
……
……
It’s because Hutch wanted Starsky to come over early so they could watch the sunset together.
Think about it. It’s the first thing Hutch mentions at the beginning of the tag. Why would a grown man want another grown man to look at a sunset with him? Do platonic heterosexual men-friends normally do that sort of thing?
No, I’m pretty sure they do not.
And also, Hutch doesn’t just casually mention the sunset in an offhand way. He talks about it for a while, and even mentions how it has the colors of the rainbow: “Blue, gold, red, purple.” As in, the gay rainbow. Now, I know that the rainbow wasn’t used as a symbol of gay pride until 1978, and this ep is from 1975, but still, rainbows were used by marginalized groups in the 70s, including in California, including by the gay community. And there’s the whole Judy Garland “Somewhere over the rainbow” queer icon thing. We had a discussion about this on FB a few months ago.
Regardless, even if the rainbow wasn’t intended as a gay reference, you still have a scene with a man talking about rainbows and sunsets with another man while serving him a romantic candlelit dinner.
So yeah, Hutch totally tries to seduce Starsky but Starsky is clueless. That doesn’t mean that Starsky doesn’t also pine for Hutch in his own way. Maybe he does and maybe he doesn’t. But he’s not in the right mindset in this episode because Did I mention that he’s still mourning the brutal murder of his ex-girlfriend? And yes, it’s totally weird and uncomfortable when Hutch mentions Helen in the tag.
But they had to have two levels of what’s going on in this scene so the gay stuff wouldn’t be too obvious.
So we have the surface text (two straight guys who like women having dinner together) and then we have the subtext (all the gay romantic stuff plus the bonus “Starsky is Jewish” Paul Muni reference).
And men who like women can’t possibly be gay or bi, can they?
So the subtext is a man trying to romantically woo his best friend by talking about sunsets and rainbows, cooking him his favorite meal which he got from his friend’s mom, and setting a romantic candlelit table. And making up a story about a girl coming over in order to save face.
So the fans who were not inclined to see the characters in a romantic way would just watch the scene and think it was sweet and shippy, because the guys are such good platonic friends, and not really spend any time thinking about how platonic heterosexual men-friends don’t really do stuff like that.
But the fans who wanted to see the romance between the guys would see it.
And both types of fans would be happy and would argue with each other for the next 45 years about whether S&H were gay or just really really really good friends.
Except maybe for straight males who were just there for the car chases and shootouts and macho stuff. I really have no idea how those fans feel about this tag.
Tried posting this wallpaper last night but lack of sleep meant I wasn’t paying attention and all I posted was a smaller version.
So here have a Hutch wallpaper.

Rediscovering Old Loves
A few months ago a channel on UK TV started showing an old favourite TV show of mine. I thought I would tune in and relive my youth. Well it did a hell of a lot more than that. It rekindled a passion for the show and one of it's stars. I used to have a wall in my bedroom covered in two massive posters of this man.
Rewatching the show I fell head over heals in love with the show the character and the man all over again.
So who is the object of my rekindled obsession
Detective Kenneth Hutchinson, Hutch for short.

My lovely Felix passed away this afternoon. I will miss my beautiful boy.
In February mom started having issues with getting winded easily & over the past few months it has gotten worse to the point that at times it’s hard for just to walk around the apartmen. Drs have run a few tests & as of now still no answers as to what is causing this so April 13 it was decide that...
As the description says my mom is very sick and we and the doctors have no explanations for why. She’s had many health problems pop up over the years - rheumatoid arthritis, MS symptoms, diabetes, borderline cancerous tumor removals - just to name a few. She’s over the last few months gotten worse and cannot do much and thus had to take some time away from work to figure out what’s wrong.
Unfortunately, because the system sucks she’s only gotten one measly check since then and it basically all went to her health insurance. The benefits center at our job has dragged their feet and still have not put her paperwork through so she can continue to get at least a percentage of her pay.
I’ve been working basically every hour I possibly can and then coming home and spending all my time taking care of her when needed. But obviously my paychecks are not enough to cover rent, a car payment, utilities, food and other expenses. I’ve already had to skip out on a $40 student loan payment [and will probably continue to have to do so until something changes].
So, this is me pleading and begging for help. We are going to lose everything by the end of the month if we don’t come up with the money we so desperately need. Our only options then are to move in with emotionally abusive family that I don’t even like speaking to on the phone. This has already been an emotionally draining situation for us both - she can barely leave the house and I haven’t left the house for anything other than work and grocery store runs in a month. I’ve had to turn down so many plans and so has she. We don’t need another knock against us by having to move two states away from the people we truly consider family.
So please, please please please. Share this. Donate anything you can. You can direct message me on here for other options if you’d like. I’m desperate and just feel like this life has been an utter failure and I don’t know where to go from here so please. Help.
ADDITION MAY 26: We have until June 4th to pull together $2000 to get all of our bills current and to not be evicted and lose our car. Please, reblog this, share the link on your facebooks, twitters, hell even instagram. I’ve reached to various people on here [who have all graciously reblogged this post without ever talking to me before] and I’ve shared the link on Twitter with various celebrities even but we are basically screwed. So, please please please share this. Please.
I caught a glimpse of Mr Cumberbatch Filming in Glasgow today.
It comes in waves.
Sometimes I’m fine I listen to Linkin Park and I am fine I even just get lost in the music. But sometimes the loss of Chester hits home like a sledge hammer. I’ve done nothing but cry the last two days.
I want to hold him and tell him how many people he helped through his music and his lyrics. I want to tell him how much he was loved, I want to tell him how much he mattered and how much he is missed. i wish we could have taken away his pain and been there for him the way he was for all of us.
Now I love Adele but I have to say I love Chester’s version of Rolling In the Deep more than Adele’s
Watch Chester doing what he did best. Bearing his soul and singing like an Angel
tonight in vermont news:
the police department in our state capital was called because a skunk was wandering down main street with its head stuck in a yogurt cup
not wanting to risk getting sprayed, and unsure of how to remove a skunk from a yogurt cup anyway, the police googled “how to get a skunk’s head out of a yogurt cup”
this led them to an article, published by Arizona police in 2015, titled How to Take a Yogurt Cup Off a Skunk’s Head Without Getting Sprayed
using the method outlined in that article, vermont police safely caught the skunk, removed the yogurt cup, and sent the animal on its way
they did this without anybody getting sprayed in the process
“and then we recycled the cup,” vermont police wrote on their department’s facebook page, “so a win all around.”
This is just perfect. Best laugh all day :)
A strange weekend of sadness and laughter at LFCC.
The last weekend in July was London Film and Comic Con. I booked to go back in March but job issues always made the trip a possible no go.
Three friends and I were meeting up at the con. We met at a con about 7 years ago through a love of Michael Rosenbaum, and we have continued to meet up at cons ever since. Though finances and looking after my mum meant i missed a few years and this was supposed to be our first time all together in over 3 years. So I was rather bummed about possibly missing it. And missing meeting the lovely Michael Rosenbaum of course :)
So my friend in London made the offer of staying with her for the weekend and after worrying about imposing and considering about going or not I decided to hell with it and booked the train and the photshoots with Michael and it was all sorted. But my biggest delight was that Bernard Cribbins was going to be there as well. As a Brit I grew up watching Bernard, he voiced the Wombles when I was a kid, he was in nearly every classic British comedy film I watched growing up. I adore him. Plus he has been in the film of Doctor Who in the 60′s with Peter Cushing and the series with David Tennant’s Doctor.
So it was all set.
Then my friend sent me a DM telling me a certain Mr Cumberbatch decided he was going to the con. My internet was down at the time the router playing silly buggers with my connection. I thought she had to be wrong as he was in Atlanta filming the last time I was online. But when I opened twitter on my phone there it was all over my timeline *headesk*
So I HAD to buy a pass, it was Benedict after all.
Then as life likes to do, an emotional spanner was thrown into the works on Thursday 20th July.
Linkin Park’s music and Chester Bennington’s voice got, and still gets me, through some rough moments in my life. When I can’t cope I like my music loud and angry and In The End was my go to track most of the time. I’d turn it up loud and sing along with Chester.
i should point out at this point I am WAY older than most Linkin Park fans at 50+
I’m not a “happy” person. I have always been depressive. I’m also not good with people. I overthink, over worry and generally can’t let things go. But I cope and I like to think for the most part I do okay.
Linkin Park’s lyrics have always connected on an emotional level with the fans, myself included and their recent album One More Light spoke to me on SO many levels. Plus Chester’s vocals on it are beautiful.
But in light of events it’s heartbreaking to listen to. I have had it on repeat ever since the news. In fact I have had their entire album collection on repeat since the 20th I can’t seem to listen to anything else.
So his suicide hit me hard. Hell it hit fans all around the world hard. I read one quote on twitter and it stuck with me. He screamed like the devil and sang like an angel. It fits him perfectly. Chester had many demons in his life, severe depression among them, he openly talked about his issues and he battled them and he defeated most but one won and we lost someone special.
Suddenly a con in London didn’t seem a good idea not when I couldn’t go a few hours without crying. My boss made a comment the day after the news broke, about people getting upset when a celebrity dies, then took one look at me and I think realised he should shut up and let me listen to Linkin Park all I wanted.
I nearly didn’t go to the con. i also realised the way I was feeling that staying with my friend would be a bad idea. She didn’t need to deal with my emotional state. And I didn’t know how up or down I’d be. So my poor credit card took another hit for the hotel. I will pay it off in a few years :)
Strangely it was through Linkin Park and because of Chester that I decided to go to London. There were memorials taking place all over the world one week after his death, and the train I had booked for the convention arrived i in time to attend the memorial in London.
It worked out well as my friends wanted to go to a show that night. And I really wasn’t feeling up to that. So they went to a show and I went to the memorial. Sang some songs, got a bit emotional along with everyone else, left a message and lit some candles (got totally soaking wet) and got back to the hotel after half eleven at night. God knows when I made it to bed.
It was cathartic going to the memorial. It was something i needed to do. I felt I owed it to Chester.
Friday morning I got up and went to the con. Met Michael got a lovely hug from him when he saw me in the autograph queue. He made me laugh. I hadn’t laughed in over a week. God I needed that hug and the laugh.
The con got underway, and I enjoyed myself.
Managed not to make a fool of myself when meeting Benedict, that’s always a plus. Got a seat in the front row for his talk which was awesome as I am short and nearly always get stuck behind someone tall:)
Missed Michael’s talk :( I only wanted to see two talks the whole weekend and they end up being on at the SAME TIME *headesk*
It was lovely meeting up with the girls again. We had a laugh and caught up on things and went out for some lovely food.
But back at the hotel at nights that was time to connect with other Linkin Park fans, share memories of Chester and the goofy things he got up to on tour or share videos and listen to him tell funny stories about fan encounters.
It was a weird few days of laugher and fun during the day and high emotions and very often tears at night.
I’m glad I went to the Con and the Memorial.
I will post some pictures tomorrow.
Thank You! Thank You for everything. Thank You for all songs, thank You for your beautiful voice, thank You for all great concerts, even if I wasn’t there to see you live. And now, I don’t even have a chance. I’ll miss You forever. We’ll all miss You forever. Always and forever. Thank You for everything.

Re-blog if you can write in cursive.
I heard cursive is dying. I want to see who still uses it.
I can but if I want anyone to be able to read it then I print. I had lovely writing till a primary school teacher insisted I had to write with my right hand.
