all the “peer pressure is bad” education we give kids is practically useless because all it cares about is telling them that Drugs Are Evil rather than the much more useful lesson of ‘the person who responds to you saying you don’t drink by telling you they’ll find a way to get you to is also going to be shitty about all your other boundaries’.
god forbid you teach kids that their consent should be respected rather than about the inherent immorality of all the sinful actions of their peers
They won't do that because if they did they become harder to be influenced themselves.
I argued about this with therapist.
That we should have classes about healthy communication and boundaries.
And she just stared at me like... "But what is healthy?"
And my jaw dropped and mentioned everything we'd established.
"and... Do you think everyone will agree to that? And what if they don't?"
I paused for a minute, until she then went on to say that many teachers won't each teach sex ed, or evolution etc. why on earth would they teach them something as helpful as that?
"if anything, they're at risk of being shaped by those who want to instill unhealthy behaviours"
It's a little off topic. But tbh its what seems to be why kids aren't taught the importance of consent.
They don't want to in the positions of power.
And even if we had them do it... It's a little naive to think it would go swimmingly.
But we have the ability to teach others ourselves.
It sucks ass we weren't sooner, but that's okay.
Today is just as good.
alright I've got to do some quick math to explain attitudes towards AI to my boss.
we're looking to create an AI policy, and when we were talking about this, my boss (older millennial) was genuinely shocked to hear that younger people do not (seem to) view AI positively (a la the recent commencement speakers being booed)
for clarification, AI here is referring to generative AI, rather than closed or custom-made LLMs
please rb for larger sample size!
Question 1/3
What is your age, and do you feel AI is a net positive or net negative in our lives today?
under 18, AI is a net positive
under 18, AI is a net negative
18-29, AI is a net positive
18-29, AI is a net negative
30-45, AI is a net positive
30-45, AI is a net negative
46-60, AI is a net positive
46-60, AI is a net negative
over 60, AI is a net postive
over 60, AI is a net negative
AI can be beneficial in very specific contexts BUT on the whole it is anti-labor, anti-social, anti-intellectual, anti-environment.
The companies profiting from ai are actively destroying environments and people for profit. In its current form, AI - or more specifically the companies pushing AI - is anti-life.
Also AI-data centres are literally creating buildups of nitrates and other chemicals in local water tables which are leading to upticks in rare cancers and miscarriages. OP should ask their boss if they're okay with literally killing people for their convenience, that might help the boss understand.
Re: prev
I sincerely doubt the boss will understand or care.
It's the whole bystander effect that happened with the likes of other environmentalist actions. Someone else can sort it out. "I'm not the problem. Everyone else is."
It's the idea of profits > people which is the typical movement of any/all businesses.
And they regard each other as weak for being so inclined to honor the needs of the people.
That they're falling behind.
Truthfully, I think this survey will fall on deaf ears.
I've run pilot projects with many people, I've shown the benefits of doing xyz, point out the weaknesses, how to perform contingency....
Deaf ears. Every time.
Because it's not about the facts. It's about the optics.
It's about the prospects of gold being in them there hills. Consequences be damned.
"let the nerds figure out what we can do to compensate, not my problem".
I would like to be wrong.
I hope I am wrong.
But I see this far too often to have any optimism
there’s this term i coined in my friendgroup i call “the charizard effect” and it can apply to anything and everything, but it was born from me explaining my feelings about the pokemon charizard. the term is basically about how overexposure to something be it by corporate shilling or fandom prominence drives me away from really enjoying something bc i’m exposed to it so much against my will i become tired of it. it came to me bc i was ranting about how tpci does not, and cannot stop reinventing charizard, and how it is popular and obtusely included in almost every region, merch, etc in every way possible and it’s highly commodified.
i dont dislike the pokemon charizard, in fact i really like its X form, but i am exposed to so much charizard in my pokemon consumption that i cant be bothered to care for it in any more than in passing. this applies to a bunch of other stuff i’d otherwise be ok with, but i always just call this aversion phenomena “the charizard effect”
making this term has done numbers for me being able to concisely express how i feel abt something. like. its not charizard’s fault i feel this way, im sure i’d feel normal abt it if it was stripped of all this over commodification, but i cannot. hence the name
It's the idea of the company using it as a buy in against your intellect.
It's a passive manipulative tactic and TPC has been doing it since at least gen 4.
And it is exhausting and, quite honestly, a little icky.
Because they keep throwing charizard at you every living second they can. Because "hey! You LIKE this one right??? That means you HAVE to buy it? Right?? RIGHT????? Don't you want charugazor or whatever tf his name is??? Chorizosword??"
There's no love for creating anymore. It's a husk that's absolutely desperate for your money.
And it's incessant, it's endless, it's saturated.
I'm old, I lived in an era where games weren't second to Hollywood. When it was still a niche nerdy thing.
Finding little gamey things in the middle of nowhere was like finding treasure. Like a sense of something I can connect to. This was my thing I liked, in a place I never expected it. That's so cool! When merch was so scarce and unheard of, you could see a little bootleg of something, snort at it and maybe buy it because you never saw stuff about mario
But Pokémon is... Neverending.
Much like Disney hammering you with marvel and star wars media to keep you tuned in, week after week until you burn out and crash...
It's endless. It's never gone long enough to miss it. To be... Nostalgic.
And the amusing thing is... That's what makes the nostalgia poisoned. The "they don't make it like they used to"
There are dev teams on Pokémon that have no passion, no soul or love for the legacy. Mostly because, like most companies, they have a high staff turnover. Contracts that are to do a job, then leave.
Nobody treats the franchise like their baby, because they can't be too attached. Like a foster carer at best.
The games are lackluster and disappointing and very evidently rushed out the door to continue the the productivity train and get more of your money and...
That's what charizard represents.
Charizard is everywhere, a way to convince you to part money with an overpriced undercooked game.
And you can feel it.
You can feel them using the taxidermied corpse of passion to coerce you.
And it's icky.
Because it's not because they made charizard stuff for you out of your love for the game.
It's made knowing your love for charizard means you're more likely to part with your money for a cheap lay.
You're being used.
And charizard is the catalyst. It feels dirty.

I must not fall victim to disgust. Disgust is the heart-killer. Disgust is the little-death that brings total apathy. I will face my disgust. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the disgust has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
just throwing this out there

SAMUEL WHAT DO YOU MEAN
A year or so ago I went to wood carving club with a bruised eye from my dog slamming his nose into my eyesocket and like every old lady there pulled me aside at some point to ask if my partner hit me here are some of the solutions they had in case he did.
-Replacing his vitimens with poision
- getting her brother to invite him out onto his boat and then killing him and dumping him in the ocean and saying he got drunk and fell off.
- get tboned with him in the passenger seat and then once he was in the hospital theres all kinds of easy ways to kill him like not washing my hands after a poop and then touching his wound casually.
-replacing his drink of choice with moonshine!?
- take him on a hike thats locally notorious for a rapid otter attacking hikers and once he had rabies I could just kill him any ol way and say self defense.
-One lady just cheerfully informed me she had a gun and only a few years left anyway

Imagine being the gays at a pride event in 2004 living their lives when someone grabs the microphone and announces to the room that Ronald Reagan was pronounced dead. Can you even imagine the hype, the celebration, the pure elation
This is the Pride Month that It will happen. I feel it in my gay bones

yeah yeah rainbow capitalism is bad and whatever but like. when I was a child, being pro gay was not the popular or lucrative choice. I'm happy that times have changed.
I miss rainbow capitalism. I do. I miss when it felt like public opinion was still pro gay. I understand it was always an empty gesture, but it mattered in a sense of knowing how socially acceptable being queer is. If that makes sense.
I understand the sentiment.
But the statement feels like missing the shadows on the cave wall.
In a way I miss it too.
At the very least people had to be... Covert with their bullshit. Meaning more effort, meaning less likely to be.
But they still were.
Know they enemy and all that.
At least there's more "honesty" now.
