Triple experiment. ———————————— So... Last night I was taken by a feat of the draw-‘till-you-collapse kind and decided to try out using only the round brush for everything on just one layer. I then tried gradient maps (first image you see) and added halftones while at it (second image when you swipe). The third image is the original one. Mystery. ————————————— These days I often wonder how to get out of my comfort zone, how to leave behind me the insecurities that have me chained and that restrain me in darkness. I wonder so often, that I would love to have magical dust lead me to a brighter place, unburdening my mind from taking the responsibility of walking on my own and leading myself. Do you ever have such moments? When I do, I find that the easiest way to get out of it and stop wishful thinking is hug my dog, cry out a bit, make some art and get back on my uncertain path. A #pencil and #characoal study from random #pinterest photo. ——————————— These few months have been truly a daunting time: coronavirus, administrative issues with my university, family complications and whatever. As always, the only viable way to completely let go of negativity, at least for me, is studying faces. There’s something soothing in trying to understand bone structure, how it relates to light and how it affects and shows someone’s personality. Once I start drawing, I “enter the zone” so quickly that I even forget I am a human in space instead of a drawing hand on a piece of paper. It’s just as in Capuana’s novellas, where the characters live a state of unconscious creative flow, becoming the specular image of themselves and unlocking parts of themselves they didn’t know existed. I'm so very sick of memes and phrases like "When I was younger I was happy with just having a colored pen, today’s kids aren't happy if they don't have smartphones".

It's as if older people demonised today's needs, because, fun fact, smartphones are a "need" today. With Coronavirus, if you don't own one you can't even attend classes in elementary school. And guess what, in southern Italy many children have lost contact with schools because they have no internet connection or smart devices. I’ll let you imagine the social consequences. Moreover all those "when I was younger" laments get interiorized by those who read them, honing misunderstanding between generations.

Stop demonising Today with seemingly funny stuff. Stop guilt tripping young people for wanting what comforts and commodities previous generations have created purposefully for improving what they thought they lacked in their lives.

Also, I think that whoever created this meme has used some kind of modern technology, so whoever they are, they are hypocrite too.

I’m not saying that we should give up simplicity or that simpler joys should be forsaken, but that we should think with a bit more of perspective in mind: there was an era when even books were considered high class, unnecessary goods, just saying.

Perhaps I’m just upset for my own reasons and I’m trying to vent my anger and powerlessness at anything remotely upsetting that catches my eyes. But fortunately, this is the Internet and this is the modern age, and I live in a democratic country(for now) and I have every right to say mine, even though it adds up to nothing and it’s just pointless arguing.
