Think this sums it up quite well
Finished but not really
As it’s the first day of February and 31 days of Inspiration is over I really thought I would be stuffing myself full of wheat – toast, cakes, pasta, biscuits. You name it, I thought I’d be eating it - all the wheat heavy treats I have denied myself over the last month with maybe some heavily processed foods to finish it off – Haribo, cheesecake or another sugar heavy pudding. I was going to gorge so it’s slightly surprising that today there isn’t a wheat product in sight. My menu today has been a breakfast of natural yoghurt and plums, lunch smoked haddock and hommous and raw vegetables, dinner (still to come) vegetable curry and my favourite treat from the month a couple of squares of dark chocolate (the good stuff over 70% cocoa). The reason being I’ve decided to carry on with this diet for a while. I really did start this thinking that I wasn’t sure I’d last the month, and while it may work for celebrities I wasn’t sure how realistic it was for normal people with office jobs but, although it’s taken a bit more planning and organisation, I am definitely a convert.
However I don’t really feel like I’ve been on a diet in the traditional sense although I have changed my diet, which I think is the key to my success. As Amelia says (Amelia Freer author of Eat. Nourish. Glow.) it’s not about denying yourself but changing your eating habits, I certainly haven’t been counting calories but more concentrating on eating the right type of foods, shopping smarter and avoiding processed ready meals and gluten. In fact I’ve been starting rather a lot of my sentences ‘Amelia says’ over the last month repeating the sensible advice from her book. I think my colleagues are rather tired of the refrain and I’m a bit worried that I am becoming a diet bore so trying not to talk about it too much.
The results though speak for themselves. Over the last month I’ve cooked lots more meals from scratch, experimented with new ingredients, got a lot of use from the nutribullet and not only do I feel better, both physically and mentally, but I’ve lost quite a lot of weight. Clothes that were getting a bit snug after the Christmas binge are loose again. I also think it’s been easier for me than for people that were doing dry January (judging by what my cousin who was doing it was said). Not that I’ve been drinking loads but nice to have the odd glass of wine or glass of fizz at the weekend. I haven’t been perfect but as Amelia says aim for consistency not perfection and so I’ll be stocking up my cupboards and fridge with more nuts, vegetables, chia seeds and dark chocolate and following the advice from Wheat Belly and Eat. Nourish. Glow. into February.

Fab list of books to help improve health and nutrition. I've been following Eat. Nourish. Glow. this January
Half way through January and still going strong
I had a couple of false starts before getting going with kicking the gluten. I was still away on my New Year trip with friends sharing food until the 2nd January and then visited a friend who had baked brownies especially for my visit on the 3rd January. I did trying to say no but it’s was hard when people were pushing me to accept one, and my resolved crumbed as quickly as the delicious fresh chocolate brownie that I bit into that day. Finally on the 4th January, I actually managed to get through the day without any gluten and have been just about managing to every day since.
I initially thought the Wheat Belly just meant cutting out wheat but when I read it actually turns out to be way stricter than that, limited sugar, no processed foods and only small quantities of other carbs. I’ve really had to completely change the way I shop, cook and prepare food as the easiest way to make sure everything it really is gluten free is to make it yourself. It does mean having to be a bit more organised and buying some ingredients that haven’t graced my cupboards before – coconut oil, chia seeds along with a lot more fresh fruit and vegetables and fish. However it hasn’t been as difficult as I thought it would be. Part of the reason for that is I convinced my sister to follow it as well so we’ve shared the cooking, shopping and food preparation. The other reason is that I am enjoying the fresh, home prepared/cooked food and so it hasn’t really felt like a diet in that I am denying myself all the time, although there is a lot more ingredient checking.
I thought breakfast was going to be the hardest meal as I’d be going without my much loved toast and marmite but actually the smoothies we’ve been making with our nutribullet have been pretty tasty. Plus when you are rushing through the morning routine it’s more eat and dash rather than sitting down to enjoy and savour the taste so that’s fine with the smoothie. For lunch I usually make a packed salad although did manage to go out for pub lunch with colleagues and, while there were only a few options on the menu that I could eat, I enjoyed my superfood salad. Dinner we’ve used the spiraliser with courgette, made ratatouille, curry and tried two of the recipes in Amelia Freer’s Eat. Nourish. Glow. – simple chicken and sweet potato chips and monkfish with broccoli mash both of which were really tasty and I’ll definitely make again. Shopping I’ve been sticking to the outskirts of the supermarket, as recommended in the book, so lots of fruit and veg, but also treating myself to things like prawns, smoked salmon, avocado and various nuts.
It may help that January has been fairly quiet socially so I haven’t been tempted by loads of dinners or nights out, no hangover munchies or parties with canapés. I’ve been working on Eat. Nourish. Glow. which has lots of helpful advice and recipes too. Plus work has been very busy so I haven’t had much time to think about food. Anyway two weeks in and it’s not been as difficult as I thought it would be. I’m feeling really healthy, have lots of energy and I think it’s even helped my mental as well as my physical health. Even better after Christmas weight gain I have lost over 3kg in weight and am even contemplating keeping on for more than just the month of January, which when I started I never thought I’d say, but I guess I'll see how I am doing in 2 more weeks.

Wheat Belly book by Dr William Davis which I am following this January
Following Wheat Belly plan for 31 days of inspiration
Since I agreed to take part in 31 days of inspiration, which HarperCollins are running this January, I've been struggling to decide of the books to follow. I was torn between books which can help you improve your mind, mental health and well being (13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do, Mindfulness in Eight Weeks, etc) and books which can help you improve your physical well being and body (7lbs in 7 days, Eat. Nourish. Glow. and Wheat Belly ) although I am sure there is some crossover. I ruled out the parenting books, as wise as Steve Biddulph's words are think they are more aimed at people with offspring. To be honest I think mind and body are both areas could do with a little help. Although I would like to be fluent in three months or be more mindful, after all the Christmas overindulgence I think my body needs the most work and the benefit of some healthy food. Having been working on Eat. Nourish. Glow. I think Amelia Freer's expertise could be very beneficial and I was all set to follow that but then my colleague said he was and so felt I should do something different. Amelia recommends starting by changing 'just one thing' and so I am picking gluten as my one thing and following the Wheat Belly by Dr William Davis (who Amelia is also a fan of). The added bonus is the fact The Wheat Belly Cookbook has just been published so I can try some of the recipes too. I'll let you know how I get on.
Happy New Year everyone. We are kicking off 2015 with a book giveaway. That’s 11 inspiring books from HarperCollins.
