Iris Moon SS16 Lookbook - Makeup & Hair
I have a love for lookbooks.
Working on these type of projects means clean skin and simplistic looks so the clothing can shine. I'm sure there are exceptions, but so far that's all I’ve encountered and it's some of my favorite type of work. So, I was stoked to join forces with LA based clothing label Iris Moon to work on their Spring/Summer 2016 lookbook.
The clothing was easy going and felt like it was made for "the no fuss travel woman". You know her.. we always see her in travel pics or advertisements vacationing. She has the most simplistic beauty and smells of dispensable money, so I had to convey that same feeling with the hair and makeup.
A little mascara, gloss and a pony tail… easy peasy, right?
Well kinda, and I needed a little more than that.
I tried to keep my station as simple as the intention of the shoot.
Iris Moon was looking for clean healthy skin and strong brows. My main objective is to get that skin as clear as possible without leaving it flat. After hydrating the models skin I evened it out with both liquid and cream foundations. I followed with a concealing pen under the eye for a real skin finish and adding any extra coverage where needed. I lightly dusted a translucent powder in her t-zone, applied a tinted blotting powder along her cheekbones and a pinch of pale pink blush on the apples of her cheeks. The eyeshadow was a satin pale blush color with a bit of taupe in the crease for slight depth. I then worked an espresso eyeliner into the lash line for added definition. I curled the models lashes and followed with 1 thin coat of mascara, filled and brushed her brows, and dusted a shimmer powder onto the peaks of her face. Her lips were made a natural peachy pink tone.
For hair, I loosely curled and tossled for a relaxed look adding a touch of shine spray for gloss and to tame flyaways.
A simple lipstick change can really enhance and evolve an existing look.
Once the dark lip was applied it appeared like it made the rest of the makeup pop! Our model went from "girl next door" to "casual vixen" in less than a minute.
I pulled our model’s hair back into a ponytail, twisted and wrapped a piece of her hair around the base to hide the rubber band.
The final results for Iris Moon’s lookbook were exactly what I expected... sweet, cool and chic. All the images haven’t been released yet so I enjoy watching them roll out on Instagram and the website!

WILDFLOWER
Four brown beauties called together by one… and what they conjured was pure magic. Early morning Venice Beach. My makeup station was a platform in front of a building on Main Street. It was super hot out that day and I had to lug around my kit because I didn't know exactly how the looks would progress yet, and I really didn't want to leave anything in the car. But through the fire, sweating and sand in my kit ….emerges a Wildflower.
Creative Director for Beaumonde Society, Miss Jennifer Nnamani had a vision that was a tropical delight. It came across as alluring and fun to me, and with model/muse Lilian Uwanyuze and photographer Osose Oboh I knew that feeling would be captured easily.
Our first look was washes of berry on Lilian's lips an cheeks. I first prepped her face with moisturizer followed with a hydrating serum before applying cream foundation to lightly even out any discolorations. Next was a bright berry cream blush sheared out and a hint of plum gloss. I used the cream foundation as her eyeshadow color and a bit of cream black liner worked into her top lash line for more definition. Last, a few coats of black mascara.

Second look was a small bump up, enhancing Lilian's beautiful features a bit more. I added a tiny bit more cream blush and black eyeliner on her waterline. I deepened her eyes with a burgundy shadow, lipstick, and lip liner before pinning the flowers to the crown of her hair. Sidenote: These flowers were just picked by Jennifer as we were walking to the second location. A reminder to keep your eyes open to your environment and how it can work for you!! I feel these flowers really tied in this look perfectly!!

We all teleported to another time and space with look three and four. I layered a gold creme makeup over Lilian's eyelids and added a triangle on her forehead. I pushed a metallic gold powder over the creme and put a little down the bridge of her nose. It wasn't popping as much as I had envisioned so I used a highly reflective golden melon pigment on top of the gold powder I had already applied to Lili Ann's face. The lipstick changed to a rich bubblegum pink and I also lightly dusted the golden melon pigment to her cupids bow and cheekbones for added enhancement. The Birds of Paradise I attached were brought in By Jennifer and the scarf was my own.

Downtown Chill
Natural warm tones are always an easy way to get a beautifully enhanced version of yourself and you don't always need 20 products to get that flawless finish. Sometimes all you need is a fabulous moisturizer, great foundation that you can build up or sheer out, a warm shadow or blush, a deep peachy lip tone, and some mascara to hit the door. As day turns to evening you could add a bit more shadow and mascara to keep that easy flow.
This look was created for model Pebbles Turnbull to look clean and polished and bumped up from her normal self. The idea is to look effortless… like she just had a few minutes to get ready before hitting the door for a casual night out, and of course looking amazing as a result.

A Happee View
For this set with Model Danielle Lo, I had to choose a dark lipstick to feature and show off her amazing smile! LA Photographer Jaime Chan was able to score a super cute Tee and Joggers from Happiness Brand for Danielle so she was indeed happy and comfy, which made for an easy shoot. Her look was relaxed, pretty and hip but very simple. I lined her entire mouth with NYX Slim Lip Pencil in Y2K and then applied AJ Crimson’s matte lipstick in No Explanation with a flat brush.
Dark lipsticks can give you a sharp look, insta-confidence, and can make your teeth look whiter too! Make no mistake, sometimes it can look crazy! Keep an eye out for lipstick on the teeth make sure to use liner to help keep it in place.
Not everyone can wear any ole dark shade. If your new to wearing darker shades try starting with a stain or a deeper gloss at first so you're not overwhelmed and can build it. You can also pick up shade of lipstick you wish you could wear and shear it out at first, building as you get used to it. Before you know it, you will be rocking the deepest of Burgundy’s and applying with great precision!

Fall Vibes
Fall is here even though it still feels like summer here in LA. Despite the heat Fashion Blogger Aiko Cunanan, Fashion & Lifestyle Photographer Daniel Nguyen and myself got together recently one Sunday morning to shoot Aiko's fist blog of Fall. Her look was casual and versatile with a chic feel. The dress and necklace were adorable and I would rock that outfit myself anytime. It was a pleasure to work with some of my favorite colors and products that I knew would compliment her ensemble. These are some great kit must-haves to reach for this season. I just happen to reach for them all year.

IMATS LA 2015
I know that IMATS LA was in January folks…. and it's now September. I know.
You know how time is depicted flying casually out of the window with its big fluffy wings all cute and such? Those days are gone I tell you! Time has now upgraded to a Leer jet, IPhone, and with a New York patience. Sometimes being a freelance artist I get caught up in the day to day and forget to share all of the goodness that happens along the way. A very bad habit of mine I plan on breaking with this blog hopefully.
That being said, IMATS LA 2015 was a new experience for me this year. On Friday and Sunday I worked with my regular LA trade show crew from Frends Beauty. It is always a great time with them! Plenty of awesome products at a show price, learning, reconnecting with friends, and always meeting new ones! But on Saturday…. I got to be the model for Debbie Muller who was doing a Great Gatsby demo for London Brush Company at the Alcone booth using Ben Nye products. Debbie has worked on some heavy hitting movies like The Wolverine and The Great Gatsby and currently working on the Australian hit TV series Open Slather… and just an all around AMAZING WOMAN!! She has been an ideal Makeup Mama for me over the years and I'm blessed to have her in my life.
Debbie and her assistants Selena Pertzel (@selpertzel) and Liv Zak (@livzakfx) somehow managed to persuade my waist length twists under a full weave that was brought in by Sian Richards (of LBC) herself. The night before they stayed up gelling part of the hair into s-patterns so it would be formed and dry by Saturday morning. The rest of the hair was shaped on the spot so it would lay correctly over my hair. Deb almost lost it when I told her I currently had braids, but like a pro she problem solved and figured out a solution. They pinned, prodded, and gelled the shit out of my head until she saw the desired result. Once dressed we were off to makeup!
The makeup was so beautiful and the process was quite lovely! London Brush Company makes some of the most divine brushes!! They felt like pure butter on my face. So dreamy. I never felt a poke, scratch or any discomfort. In fact I could have sat there longer and let her work. I sat there daydreaming and starring at Sam Fine from across the isle while Debbie transformed me into a blast from the past! I felt like a glamorous performer ready for her show!
Not so glamorous that night as I sat for 30 minutes fishing out all of the anchor pins in my hair watching the wefts fall to the floor. Don't think for one minute that I didn't wash all of that fabulous hair and store it away!! Good as new people… Good. As. New.
It ended up being a whirlwind of creativity and get 'er done. The best shit happens that way, right?
I don't have a list of all the products used but this I do know…
